    When I built my last computer I decided to forgo the floppy drive, however when I went to load my RAID drivers during Win2K setup, I discovered that Microsoft, in it's infinite wisdom, will only take RAID or SCSI drivers off a floppy. There is no option to browse any other media.

    In any case, I hooked up a floppy during setup and then tossed it in the closet when I was done.

    I certainly hope that in future versions of windows we won't be forced to use obsolete media.

    The only thing these slimeballs understand is overwhelming, crushing force. You bomb my tube, I Tomahawk your mosque. Fallujah and other hotbeds of terrorism should be reduced to overlapping bomb craters. We need to make it so these scum know without a doubt that if they do this shit, it will be brought back on them tenfold.

    In this world, there are people who need to be shot dead, not negotiated with or have the error of their ways pointed out to them, but removed from this earth, and the sooner the better.

    While it's true that AMD is working Intel over pretty good, Intel still has a large percentage of the market share.

    I, for one, hope that changes soon.

    I've had uptimes of over 40 weeks with a daily-use Windows 2000/AMD system. All my *nix servers are AMD, my Windows 2003 servers are Opteron based. Years ago there may have been stability issues, but in my experience, that's not the case now.

    I've used AMD chips for as long as I can remember and the only stability problems I've had was either bad RAM or a bad OS (Windows versions before Win2K).

    There may be some truth in your joke. Sometimes people don't value things that are free, even if they are valuable.

    A quick example: The bicycle racing team I'm a part of used to be free to join. Nobody was joining until they started charging $25 to sign up, now people are joining all the time.

    Some people may not take Linux seriously as they mistakenly believe it is worthless because it is free.

    Not that I want it to stop being free, I like the current model. I'm just sayin'...

    Or you can right-click on them and select 'Rename'. Alternatively, you can highlight it and press F2, also allowing you to rename it.

    The transfer window in FF is my number one complaint also. Overall I like Firefox, but I've been an Opera user since the 5.x version and I absolutely love it. Opera is really driving browser development forward with all it's neat ideas that 'just work'.

    That would be awesome, unfortunately that's not the world we live in. If you want a computer that works, you have to know how to use it properly in order to keep it from getting fscked up.

    It's not ideal, but it's reality.

    No, I'm not surprised. Being a Systems Administrator, I subscribe to Bugtraq and stay up to date on browser vulnerabilites, amongst other things.

    I'm glad you feel good about having your virus scanner running. I feel good about using those system resources on other things.

    Thus the reason I have my PC behind a NAT router. All ports are blocked unless I specifically allow them.

    - So to recap:
    - Keep your software updated
    - Firewall your PC (I like a NAT router)
    - Use Opera or Firefox
    - Use common sense when opening files or visiting websites

    I don't know where you got the idea that I don't use the internet much. I am a heavy internet user. When my ISP goes down, I sit staring at my PC thinking, "What now?"

    My email is done through Yahoo mail, so I don't have to worry about mail client exploits. I use Opera, so all the IE exploits don't bother me. If I happen to come across a suspicious executable, I usually pop it in a hex editor to get some clue as to what it does.

    All I'm saying is that a little common sense goes a very long way with this problem, even if you're a heavy internet user like I am.

    They also need to use their brain. A cow-irker of mine was baffled when I said that I don't run any antivirus or antispyware products on my home PC, and I don't have problems with said threats.

    They said, "How do you keep from getting infected?"
    To which I replied, "I don't use IE, I don't go places I shouldn't and I don't run suspicious programs."

    Protection programs are all well and good, but users need to also learn proper usage techniques.

    Handguns are woefully underpowered. They are nothing like Hollywood depicts. While they absolutely are capable of causing great damage, they can't be counted on to stop someone in one or two shots even. We don't carry handguns because they're powerful, we carry them because they're portable. As the saying goes, "Use the handgun to fight your way to your long gun."

    (As a footnote, I have taken training courses at both Front Sight, NV and Suarez International. Courses including 2 Day Defensive Handgun, 3 Day CCW, 4 Day Advanced Tactical Handgun, 4 Day Practical Rifle, 2 Day Close Range Gunfighting and 2 Day Force-on-Force.)

    That's not true. Many crimes each year are thwarted by CCW holders without having to fire a shot. As soon as the gun clears leather and the badguy sees it, he takes off running.

    Most criminals are real brave until they discover their would-be victim is armed.

    In partial agreement with you: some situations escalate so quickly that all you can do is draw and shoot as fast as possible, but there can be merrit in pointing and being prepared to shoot without actually firing.

    Different situations warrant different responses.

    As he stated in another post, there are vermin in his area of business that would not hesitate to kill him in order to steal his computer gear. He carries a gun to defend his life, not to shoot people stealing sticks of gum.
