  1. Re:Communism or Socialism on Richest 2% Own Half the World's Wealth · · Score: 1

You make a big mistake by assuming that in communism there's as much wealth to share. Communism prevents the most capable citizens of being productive. It stops ideas from blossoming and society from being developed as that may change the status quo. Communism is all about actively stalling development.

The newspaper in Oulu, Finland recently published old news and letters to the editor to celebrate it's history. In the beginning of the 80's there was a letter written to the newspaper by a communist. The writer was furious about the resources that the Oulu University was wasting in R&D of "spy phones" and "toys" and demanded the society to stop that. Resources were supposed to be spent in heavy industry and deeper cooperation with the Soviet Union.

What were these "spy phones" and "toys?" The first steps of Nokia cell phones.

One thing worth noting is also that Finland is a very homogenous country. Almost everybody are ethnically finnish. In spoken language we even refer to our swedish speaking minority as swedes even though they have nothing more than a language common with our western neighbour.

Furthermore, I really think that the anti-semitist card has been used for far too long already. Hitler did a horrible crime against Jews but Israel shouldn't use that to gain political advantage any more. Israel is not the weak little victim in this conflict.

If you want a bug fixed fast, you should make it as easy as possible for the developer to reproduce the problem:

    1. Get the latest nightly build and a fresh start with a new mozilla/firefox profile
    2. Write exactly step-by-step how to reprocuce the problem

If you do that, the developer can follow your steps. If he can reliably reproduce the bug, you've done a great job and helped identifying the bug. If not, there's not much the developer can do to help you.

First of all, I've done about 7 years of VB programming and 4 of Delphi programming. I work as a developer in a company that uses both languages.

All the advantages you point out in VB are also in Delphi. It has an integrated IDE like VB does. You create software pretty much the same way except you use Pascal instead of Basic.

VB is only better at debugging. You can make changes without having to recompile and restart. But that's it.

    Advantages of Delphi over VB:

    - Wonderful backwards compatibility. Delphi apps written with Delphi2 can be compiled with Delphi7 without any modifications.

    - Small and fast executables.

    - The component model is just wonderful. It's truly enjoyable to write own components in Delphi.

    - You can write advanced software with Delphi. It lets you dig deeper when you want to. For example: writing multithreading apps.

    - Delphi offers much more components than VB6.

Do yourself a favour and try to learn Delphi. You won't regret it.

I started programming way before Windows and used to do only basic. When Visual Basic came, it was awesome. I ended up doing even some pretty big projects with VB3. You didn't even notice that it was "only" made with basic as I knew how to write fast code. Learned all the ugly tricks and invented a few more while I was at it.

Problems started when Microsoft released VB4. The changes were so big (vbx->ocx, 16bit->32bit) that I realy couldn't compile my software any more. One of our employees went through the trouble with a smaller project but mine was pretty close to impossible. So I thought I'd rewrite and make a new and better version at the same time. I guess I chose VB5 or 6 at that point.

To speed up VB6, I decided to write DLLs with C. That's a lot more efficient when handling strings. What I noticed was that VB stores strings as 16 bit unicode. However, when the string is passed to a DLL, VB converts it to 8 bit Ansi. When an array is passed, the whole array is converted. It was awfully slow. Worse was that there was no way to change that. After one week of frustrations I decided to give Delphi a try.

Now I have done almost only Delphi for 4 years. Delphi is pretty much as easy as VB but it produces way faster code. The best part is that you can go as deep as you want when you want it. You can write your own controls, the object model is beautiful, and everything just works and makes perfect sense. The difference is really monumental.

When I look back, I can't imagine how stupid I was for using VB earlier.
