This is what happens when big Online companies like Google , Facebook etc use millions of dollars of lobbying to prevent charging by the byte under the guise of net neutrality laws. All the traffic which is generated by these sites and from which these sites generate billions of dollars of revenue needs to travel over infrastrcuture and someone needs to build it. The cable companies can no longer afford to build it as Google's lobbying (along with Netflix et al) has prevented them from making enough money (by charging the larger load creators for more money) so they no longer can create the physical infrastructure. Much of the coding can be done remotely but it needs US employees to take phone calls at night with India which people are not open to if they do not belong to the same company. So if you give the entire contract to an Indian company they can reduce the number of people who need to be at site , do most of the coding and management from offshore while having the key client interaction employees be in the US and have these employees work with offshore. These employees need to be a special breed - they need to be technically sound enough to do the hands on coding job, personable enough with clients to get the proper requirements and be patient enough to coach offshore teams at night. generally these jobs are done by 3 differnt people in traditional American companies so whenan HCL hires Coders or Business Analysts or Trainers locally these folks give up soon when they realize they have to do 3 different jobs. Plus they have no empathy for the offshore workers. On the other hand an offshore worker brought here on an H1B does have the empathy and has been on the other side of the table so he or she works out. In practice this means even the onsite positions are filled by H1Bs not locals. The cost savings are realized based on having some uniquely skilled folks with strong loyalty to a company being at onsite. Its a unique advantage Indian companies have that given the large population they are able to hire large numbers of such difficult to find people. Theres no point complaining about it. It would be like complaining why people prefer Fizzy wine from the region of Champagne in France rather than Fizzy wine from somewhere else. Champagne just has some small but measurable geographical advantage and the same is for Indian Outsourcing companies.

Should compulsory licensing of all medicines be the norm rather than the exception and drug patents be banned. All drug research is based on basic research funded by the NSF so it does not seem fair that Pharma companies get to make the large profits based on doing the last 30% of the journey of bringing a drug to market. A reasonable 50% profit margin over manufacturing costs and a one time bounty based on the importance of the drug should be enough Profit motive . Such bounties could be announced in advance like the Ansari prizes This would refocus the Pharma industry from just trying to make money and instead on treating sickness. It would also make it unattractive for Wall Street Assholes to come to the Pharma Industry and the Scientists could work in peace.

There is a difference between a frontier which is habitable but inhabited and a frontier which is not inhabitable without artificial tools. Settling Mars is not like settling the prairie. Its more like settling the bottom of the ocean and we have not managed to do it even though its just 7 miles away. Asking people to go as settlers at this point is just murder. If we were to send professionals to start a terraforming and then send Settlers in 100-200 years once the terraforming has started to take effect it would make sense. Sending settlers without terraforming is just not economically feasible. We would have to evolve a separate species who could live in artificial environments forever.
