Anyone saw Sneakers? IIRC, all the monitors ever displayed was text and some vector graphics (OK, and one splashy graphics scene when their phones were being traced), and that was a pretty damn exciting movie. The excitement really came from what the audience knew that the characters were breaking into, and knowing how much trouble the characters could get into, not from what was being displayed on the screen.

Hang in there. I'm sure some screenwriters will read this slashdot article and catch on. =)

Damn it, font color tags aren't allowed on slashdot comments. The trick that other sites use for spoilers is that they write the text in the same color as the background, so it stays invisible if you don't wanna read it and if you wanna spoil everything, you highlight the text.

One of the annoying things about these slot-loaders is that you can't play mini CD's in them. I have quite a few singles CD's from Japan that won't go into these slot-loading CD drives. You either need one of the typical tray CD drives (preferrably the kind where you snap in the CD, like on laptops and the old iMac) or you have to put the mini CD in an annoying adapter disc. Oh well, nobody uses the mini CD's in the US, but in Japan it's the only way that artists release singles.

I think the article even realizes that it's just stirring up unnecessary controversy by aligning everything into a Mac vs. Linux topic. Macs and Linux have their own places in the computer world, and can easily coexist as far as I can tell. I love my Macs, but I can easily say that Macs will always be a niche product, and so will Linux. You know what? There's nothing wrong with that. Different people have different computing needs, and for that reason I think having the variety of BeOS, Linux, Windows and Macs is a good thing. Is Linux the Next Big Thing? Fine, no jealousy here. I'm sure there will always be another Next Big Thing down the line, and that's actually a good sign because it keeps the rest of the industry on its toes. The introduction of the Mac impacted the rest of the computing world in a positive way, and I'm sure Linux will have a positive influence on Macs and Windows too.

Of course, even though that's the target audience of Powermac users, I'm pretty sure that most Powermac owners haven't used any sort of color calibration at all. If you really need gaming on a Mac, 3Dfx has announced that they've begun work on AGP cards for the G4's.

Some NT admins'll get exposed to OSS after trying it out and others will just be happy that they can get a real mail program on NT and stick with their NT boxes.

Which, in the end, is better than not making sendmail for NT at all.

IIRC, IBM and Motorola got together a few months ago and decided on a standard architecture for future PowerPC chips to maintain compatibility between their different designs. That way they wouldn't have to negotiate every time one of them came up with a new feature (The need for such a standard was evident when they had a little disagreement about Altivec). It's called "Book E," and although it's not mentioned in the roadmap, I'd guess it'll be implemented from the G5's and on.
