  3. Energise! on Pentagon Urges Space-Based Solar Power · · Score: 1

"The Pentagon's interest in such an effort stems from the need to acquire energy on the battlefield.."

Sure, "energy" on the battlefield, 5-10MW could be fairly useful on a battlefield. Consider most 'useful' things deliver energy in the kilojoule ranges, including rifles... cars... tanks...

The Honeywell LV100-5 turbine engine delivers 1500 hp (1119 kW), and that's used to propel a 61.4 Ton M1 Abrams tank at 67.72 km/h! (Wikipedia of course)

So 'missing' with this power sat is like having 5-10 M1A2 Abrams driven into you at full speed. Nifty.

  4. It's dodgier than a dodgy thing... on New Line And Jackson - Irreconcilable Differences · · Score: 1

I'm not sure if anyone on the discussion noticed, but this suit is for Peter's rights to the profits to only the first movie in the trilogy, LOTR:The Fellowship of the Rings.

Newline has refused Wingnut films to audit the profits from the two subsequent films despite that they are contractually obligated to do so.

In New Zealand it is being reported that the studios have pulled out because Jackson and Walsh were refusing to reduce their share of the profit, which is also why LoTR and King Kong changed studios early in production.

  11. Common Assumptions on Is Evolution Over In Humans? · · Score: 1

Well, after skimming the comments there are some common assumptions made by /. posters.

Firstly, most are assuming 'fittest' means fit like 'six-pack abs like on infomercials' or 'smart like Einstein'. 'Fittest' in evolution is prettly literal, that which fits its niche best, hence can compete with less effort. Just think how bad some fit brawny dumb guy would be as an design engineer, or cryptographer. Think how good Einstein was at getting his University Math papers in on time. Niether fitted. Think of how well Rain-Man fitted in a Casino.

Another assumption is that evolution applies only to the meat packet that our consiousness wanders around in, or an even narrower view of just the genetic code describing them. Evolution applies to the memes in our head, the tasks we do, and the massive neural network that is your central nervous system. Dawkins (Blind Watchmaker) and Dennet (Darwins Dangerous Idea) both agree that evolution applies to any natural system as a reductionist process that will eventually optimise the system to its minimal effort/maximium competitiveness.

Man may not be evolving in the flesh, but our minds will always find better, 'fitter' ways to do things. Nor is evolution limited to us, we are also causing the information, techniques and technology that we use to improve. Humankind's judgement is the selection criteria that is molding the information we use, the machines, techniques and algorithms in our technologies, and even the thoughts and memes in our heads.

  15. Gestures in B&W clarification on Best Device For Gesture Based Input? · · Score: 4

I noticed that some people seem to assume that the gestures in B&W are in the plane of the screen. The manual reads that these gestures are 'drawn on the ground'. I've found that gestures are more successful in the game if they are distorted to account for the slope of the terrain. Hence, doing a 'perfect' gesture on a tablet or with a mouse won't work too well, it needs to be put into perspective...
