I see no mention in the article for blockchain. And whereas support for WiFi and USB 3.1 is probably going to benefit manufacturers (fewer components to make a PC) blockchain would have a much bigger impact on Intel's stock price.

  3. My granddaughter gave me a "love you" sticker that they gave her at Trader Joes' so I stuck it to my laptop. Hopefully it has no drug use connotations and will not offend. :-/

  4. I've done it. I have offsite backups at my son's place. They've been building incrementally for years now. I wanted to migrate from EXT4 to ZFS and upgrade the H/W while I was at it. In order to complete the work, I created a local copy of the remote filesystem and put it on an 8TB external HDD. It took hours. Then I took it to my son's place and loaded it on the remote system. The data set is over 3TB and would have taken way way too long to transfer over the Internet with the upload caps that Comcast exerts. For this particular use case latency was not an issue.

  5. So to write for example 300 bytes, the controller has to pull in a 4k block to its RAM, edit those 300 bytes, and write out the entire 4k block again.
Pull power before this is done and your 300 bytes are gone.

I think it may be worse than that. For some devices you have to erase the entire block before it can be written so if power is removed at the wrong time, the entire 4K block can be lost. (My experience is with NOR flash chips used in embedded system and may not be applicable to SSDs and flash drives.)

I believe that one difference between enterprise and consumer SSDs is that the enterprise SSDs have a capacitor or battery or something to insure sufficient power to complete this process should power be removed at the wrong time.

As to the original question... I prefer something more reliable than "most of the time you'll be OK."

This is just a comment about where you "put your eggs." If you put them all in one basket and something happens to that basket, all of your eggs can break.

Moreover, if you put some outside resource in a position where a change there can doom your enterprise, you are at great risk. This is true regardless of the resource. In the case of code hosting, there are alternatives. There's Bitbucket, Gitlab and probably others hosted in the cloud. Or you can host Gitlab or Gitea on your own H/W or VPS.

This is not like social media where you cannot leave without losing all of your connections. Your projects can go anywhere and still work. Of course for Big Projects the move will be costly. This is a good opportunity to evaluate how expensive the next move will be and choose accordingly.

It wasn't so long ago that Microsoft tried to kill off everything that was not Microsoft. They did not succeed. Yet. Their recent (post Ballmer) actions seem to truly support open source, but recall that their earlier strategy was to "embrace, extend, extinguish." It would be wise of the open source community not to permit itself to be put in a situation where MS can "extinguish."

Trust but verify (and hold at arm's length.)

Too funny. My son works in a shop where they do S/W that winds up in shop floor systems. There is no mouse or keyboard to dismiss the popup - these are systems driving big displays that update production status and needs. They are switching to Raspberry Pis running Linux. They still us Microsoft products for development and the back end but perhaps a Linux desktop will be more convenient for development and then SQL server on Linux on the back end.

As to the OP's question, add my vote for Chrome as in a Chromebook or Chromebox. They're bulletproof and will soon gain the capability to run Linux applications. If the youngster gets to the point where they want to install their own OS, many Chrome devices can also run Linux.

These specific problems are handled by go. `go dep` will fix issues with dependencies, adding and subtracting to provide only to what the code uses. (NB: I don't know what it does when referenced modules are not locally installed.) `go fmt` will reformat code to meet the requirements stipulated by the language.

My knee jerk reaction when I discovered the draconian rules that govern code formatting was that the designers had gone overboard. Then I realized that ends the arguments about formatting, indentation, tabs vs. spaces and so on. Those arguments suck the air out of the room w/out providing any benefit. I can pick up anyone's go source and don't have to learn their style before I start to understand what the code does. I do still have to learn their go idioms and patterns but I don't have to wade through their formatting to do that.

In any case, VS code with the recommended go plugin takes care of these things for you automatically.

That's a little how I handle spam phone calls now. Previously I only answered when the number was listed in my contacts (or I was expecting an important call from someone not in my contacts.) Now I answer every call and immediately touch the mute button. Then I just listen. My rationale is that it ties up one of their outbound lines until their system hangs up. Usually these calls remain silent and disconnect in a few seconds. One remained connected for 5 minutes. I wonder if I should say something in order to get to a real person and string them along as long as I can. It would waste even more of their resources.

Both strategies depend on wide scale adoption in order to have the desired effect.
