Crusoe isn't innovative, that idea has been around for ages, they just happend to be the first one to get it to work on silicon.
The idea for nanotechnology has been around for ages, now, if were to build robot smaller than 1/100 mm you wouldn't call that innovation? How about time travel, after all, we've all heard of the idea?
PC will die..[blah blah]..Wearable computers..[meaniningless drivel]..DNA, nanotechnology and quantum computers..[within 5000 years]..mobile computing..[blah blah]..e-commerce, e-society [kiss my e-ass]..Moore's law will not hold..[as predicted 15, 10 and 5 years ago]..
Doom is still one of the best FPS's around, both in single and multiplayer mode. The sounds are just amazing, Doom is the only game where the music and monster sounds have ever scared me. Sure, the graphics are bit dated, but engines like glDoom and Doom3D, it doesn't look bad at all. I still play Doom occasionally and let me tell you: the game is just as good now as it was five years ago.
I'll be open sourcing my ass next week for all of you who'd like to get a look at it.
Look? That's not open source! If you want to call your ass open source, you must truly open your buttocks. Looking is nice, but you also have to give people the right to touch it, modify it, copy it (Xerox), and redistribute the copies - all for free. I'm so sick of companies and people who use a "look but don't touch" license, and then call it open source!
Yes, basic is a real crummy language. Yes, one of the first thing it'll teach you is how to use goto's. Yes, I think it's the best language for small kids. Basic is good for this particular purpose because you can write a working program without learning any theory. It would be downright cruel to give a 700-page Java book to kid who just wants to make something. Basic may not last very far, but it will help your kids to decide if they are at all into programming. Besides, for a programming newbie a program that simply takes two ints and sums them is a triumph because for the first time they can say "look *I* wrote that program".
I think this is by far the most interesting interview slashdot has ever conducted. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that it was done over a phone, not by email. I think most people really can't (I know I can't) express themselves in a written form. Face to face or even by phone, people tend to be more open and sincere (less self censorship), and generally get the message through more clearly. Also, anyone who has ever taken part in a flame war knows how easy it is to interpet bit of sarcasm in an e-mail as someone saying "you're complete fuckup, I wish you'd just shut the hell up and let the more mature people talk". If you still remember the John Vranesevich interview you know what I'm talking about (in this case the questions were somewhat offensive, though).
Great job guys, thanks to Timothy, Lars, the people asking the questions and all the moderators (for selecting this incredibly good set of questions). Really good stuff!

And I have proof: I almost bought a Tori Amos album, but then I decided to download it with Napster. That is one less album sold and no matter what Hemos or the rest of you like to think, a great artist didn't get the money she deserved. Yes, it's my fault, I'm the criminal, but the fact is that I used Napster and it helped me rip someone off. Anyone who has ever downloaded anything off Napster and not bought it later, has no right whatsoever to say that Napster doesn't hurt record sales. And I know there are a lot of us.
The details of the story Hemos linked to does not matter (hell, I didn't even read it). Napster hurts record sales. Period.
Absolutely. And the best ones should not be stored for "a while", the best one should accessible forever. We have already lost the funniest OOG_THE_CAVEMAN post, OOG WANT PAID FOR PATENT, so clearly something must be done!
I actually thought about making an infra red link for the TI-85. As most of you surely know, TI-85's come equiped with serial cable for peer-to-peer communication (great for pong amongs other things (man, I must have wasted hundreds of hours playing those games..)). The link was only 1200 kbps, so I figured building an IR-thingy that can span a few meters would not be too difficult. This of course would not be usefull on for games, but for cheating also (not that *I* ever cheated;-)
Guys, I think zeldman.com is somekind of parody/example of how making a site look c00l can ruin the whole thing.. I mean, this guy is sopposed to be Guru Of Web (I've never heard of him before though), do you think he would make mistakes like tiny font, useless opening page, bad, blinky color, fucking the statusbar with javascript, using links with bad descriptions etc..
What else could they do? "Oh sure, we have this new kickass architecture and we would like get people to develop for it. Due to our paroid "don't tell them how it works"-policy we won't be releasing any specs though, so you'll just have to guess the right opcodes."
I may be a little dumb but why not just play the damn games I you want to hear the muzac? The games still rock and they are very enjoyable with current emulators. Yeah, downloading the ROMs may be illegal if you don't own the game, but I'm pretty sure that whoever host these mp3s has not payed the game companies for using the music...
First OOG_THE_CAVEMAN and now stuff like this. Slashdot really needs some kind of "troll archive" where people can go and read the funniest comments (comment searching only covers the last 30k comments). I hear a lot people mention MEEPT, who supposedly was real funny guy, but there is no way I can find any comments posted by him =(
So a few people who actively visit slashdot could handpick the best trolls so that I can show my future kids just how funny OOG was.
This comes in really handy as I just converted my 16MHz i386 to 1.5GHz Willamette, which as we all know doesn't support SDRAM for now. Now if could just convert that 5.25" floppy drive to a DVD-RAM drive...
So they've used this old stuff for 19 years now. The technology has been throughly tested, NO WAY is it possible that there would be bug somewhere. Now I'm sure the engineers and programmers at NASA know their shit, but nevertheless there is risk (no matter how small) that this new system has some flaw in it.
Does this really bring so much new funtionality that the risk is worth taking?
You don't have to apologize for your post. OK, so the "u" was a bit unnecessary, big fucking deal. I can't believe a comment biching about something that insignificant was moderated to +5.

Is anyone else really sick of this crap?

Or you could just use the partner s.nytimes.com link.

Oops... I meant 1200 bps of course. 1200kbps would be really cool for it though, those memory backups used to take way too long *g*
Never got round to do it though.
Like I said in my other post this probably some kind of example of bad web design, so small fonts is something to be expected..

What's with that small font www.zeldman.com, haven't you read any (web) usability guides?

..is that the tape can store a movie at HDTV-resolution. DVDs can't (even double sided dual layer disc is too small).

So they're almost like Linux users then?

The space shuttles are 20 years old, do you have any idea how little code they use? They have less than 100k of RAM if I remember correctly.

And you thought http://slashdot.org was impossible to pronounce..
