  1. Love ID Software on Quake3 to go SMP · · Score: 2

    They really do *everything* right.
    - Release the source of old games.
    - Port to Linux/Mac/BeOS/Irix.
    - Piss of Microsoft by using OpenGL. ;)
    - Make decent games.
    - And now, do SMP.

Me like ID Software. Great people do great things.

  2. It's not all bullshit. on U.S. Using Key Escrow To Steal Secrets? · · Score: 3

Some people dismiss news like this as being made up by loony conspiracy-theorists. Sure, a lot of the stuff you hear about the NSA is not true, but you'd be fool to claim that it's all BS.

The NSA budget is estimated to be around 5 billion USD - that buys a shitload hardware and bandwith, i bet the not all of that bandwith is used for reading /. and viewing porn. NSA employs ten's of thousands of people (35000-50000), i bet they aren't all gardeners.

Here a couple of excerpts from the NSA's about-page
    - "It is said that NSA is one of the largest employers of mathematicians in the United States and perhaps the world. Mathematicians at NSA contribute directly to the two missions of the Agency: they help design cipher systems that will protect the integrity of U.S. information systems while others search for weaknesses in adversaries' codes."
    - "The NSA/CSS is responsible for the centralized coordination, direction, and performance of highly specialized technical functions in support of U.S. Government activities to protect U.S. information systems and produce foreign intelligence information."

Now, what do you think the NSA does?

btw check what they say about passphrases: Note that the passphrase in our example is not a common phrase, such as a quote, a song lyric, or a general exclamation that could be compromised via hacker "brute-force" attacks.

Just lost my faith in these guys, real security experts should know the difference between brute-force and dictionary attacks.

  4. Routing is a problem. on IP Address Shortage · · Score: 3

only 10% of all available ip addresses are used

The problem isn't the amount of IP addresses, what it really comes down to is efficient routing. Lets say for example that IP 2.2.2.2 belongs to some dude in Norway. So route all packets that have 2.2.2.2 as destination to Norway. How about IP 2.2.2.3 then? Let's give it a university in Malaysia. Now routers have to know exatly where the holder of each IP lives. They have to scan every packet and compare its IP to a BIG database of locations. Needles to say, this would be very slow.

So how do 128bit-addresses help? Well, we can make a deal that the first 8 bits mark the country. Now the router needs to scan only the first 8 bits and compare it to small database to determine where to send the packet. When the packet reaches the right country, next 8 bits are checked. These 8 bits could mean the state/province/whatever. Then scan 16 bits to determine the correct city. This way you can narrow down the search step by step until the packet has been delivered. Simple and fast.

Well doh. They try to make money - that's what _ALL_ commercial companies do. Do you really think companies like RedHat and VA Reaserch are in it just beacause they want to "contiribute to the Linux community"? Glide wrappers - of course 3dfx wants to stop wrappes that hurt theit business, it is their responsibility towards shareholders. Nothing 3Dfx has done is illegal or immoral, so stop whining.

Ok. Lets look at what is out there. See any K7's? - I bet not. I know all about the K7 and am a big fan of it. I also know the that there aren't any in stores, in fact, AMD said just yesterday that the K7 will ship late. Whatever AMD will do in the future don't mean squat if you need a fast system now.

  12. PentiumII sucks on Ask Slashdot: Finding Quad Pentium II Motherboards? · · Score: 0

in 4-way configurations, that is. AMD's offering suck even more. The cache is too small and slow. For 4-way SMP you really need a Xeon, but noboby can afford even one of those babies. Give people some credit. This would hurt the most active members of the slashdot cummunity. Emphasis on the word cummunity, because that's what /. is really all about for many of us. There are people who want to make this site better, and I for one think we should reward them, not punish.

And what measures does Microsoft take to prevent the missuse of Word and Excel macros? None. Of course, technically it isn't their fault, but I think it's clear that MS should fix the HUGE security holes in Office and Windows.
