Is this article referring to hardware interactions? I thought it was more along the lines of the introduction of remote sandboxed threads providing application specific custom service interfaces. This could very easily be done now with java (maybe its time for me to start a project). And if I ever get time, I might just start the project up.

Where do you see competition coming into this? They are trying to get their codec to be THE REQUIRED STANDARD for HD-DVD content. Competition does not come into play here. In fact its the lack of competition that makes this "standard" of utmost importance. If an open format does not present itself soon, then there will be very little hope for using open source products with the new "standard".

It seems to me more like, Microsoft just wants the standard to contain some Microsoft only patents. Thereby, they can dictate what can/can't play/record the new "standard". I thinks its just another way to eliminate competition. The future of new PC is obviously going towards the digital media hub. M$ wants to make sure that hub is MS only.

If you use qmail with Gentoo it is damn easy to administrate. I like to couple that with BincIMAP. It just seems to work so damn well, very easily. I basically just like the unixness of qmail (every part is a seperate program). Sendmail sux, and I have no experience with Postfix though. But let me reiterate Sendmail sux. You use Sendmail to get your server 0wn3d :-P. Well, either that or BIND, and occasionally OpenSSH (but they are a lot better about seperating privileged processes now, so its not as much of an issue). Haven't tried Dovecot either. What are its advantages?

No joke. People really talk down to a database which is probably superior to the one they have. MySQL's feature set is nothing compared to Firebird. Firebird's license is far less restrictive. Firebird runs on a bazillion platforms. And there is documentation for it, not to mention an embedded build. Also, it has a nice no maintenance attitude. As in it can run for quite a long time without having to perform any maintenance chores on it. Also, it implements almost all (if not all) of SQL92 and a sizable chunck of SQL99. This is a nice full featured server, and anyone who just throws this off is doing themselves a great discredit.

Piece of mind through frequent physician visits costs money. Take it from a self-diagnosed :-P hypochondriac. If you want to reduce the number of "cyberchondriacs" out there:

DON'T just put out symptom lists, also put out comprehensive anti-symptom lists
DON'T tout statistical inprobability as likelyhood of having or not having a disease, since statistics don't show YOUR chances of having a disease they only show the amount of people out of a sampled set who have the disease (don't even get me started on other misinterpretations of statistics)
DO provide an open forum for discussion with doctors specializing in the field online, to allow people who still have questions to post them in a channel where they won't break the bank

And as far as the frequent doctors visits, I don't think it would be half as big a deal if there was just some way to just talk to a MD over the phone or something. I personally hate going to see doctors. But as far as I'm concerned, when my body tells me I'm feeling horrible (whether misconceived or otherwise) I go to a doctor to get answers.
