What I can still do with my PS3 if I don't downgrade it with the 3.21 patch is use Other OS, play PS1 and PS2 games (the fat has backward compatibility) and use the media server to play pirated movies and TV series.

So, the results are I won't be buy any new Sony products, I won't ever be buying any DLC, BluRay or downloadable movies again. This experience has taught me that at anytime any group can take stuff you've bought away so I'm not going to be wasting my money anymore. Sony has lost one paying customer and gained one proponent to piracy.

The PS3 was the only console not hacked for piracy. I bought my fat PS3 because of Linux support, Sony was underhanded and took that away. I think they deserve to lose out on some profits because of the disrespect they showed their paying customers. IMHO, no one hacked the PS3 because Sony was being semi-open and allowing people to use a piece of hardware the bought for something they wanted to use it for.

I won't be spending anymore money on Sony products or PS3 games in general, but I'm pissed off they took something I have already paid for away.

I sent e-mails and complained in forums and to the BBB. What I got back from Sony was a quote of Section 11 from the EULA saying they have the right to change the way their console, that's taking up space in my den, at anytime. The BBB sent me response saying "We're investigating".

Dispute what Sony did to screw me and all other PS3 Linux users over if you wanted to continue to hack the PS3 all you had to do was not update. So did what they do really effect someone trying to open the console for piracy? NO.

I've only read about the proxy work around, to my knowledge it only works if you want to connect to the PSN and buy content there. The fact is if you own a PS3 and want to do anything except use it as a Linux box you will have to eventually update it. Sony will find a way to block the proxy and even if they don't, not having the update will mean you can't play new BluRay movies or use the media server to play legit DRM movies.

That being said, to my knowledge I can still play PS1, PS2 and all the PS3 games I currently own without updating the firmware. I was also able to use the media server to play a TV series from my laptop that my younger sister had on a USB drive, so I assume pirated movies and music work with the media server. I started downloading a few things to test that theory, which I hope to do when I get home.

Take your pick use it as a Linux box or everything else you bought it for except a Linux box.

I don't plan on doing the update until it's absolutely necessary. I'm also hoping they'll put the Other OS functionality back, but I'm not holding my breath. I won't be buying any new Sony products in the near future, even if they put the functionality back, but until l they put it back I won't even consider them.

I'm an Oceanographic Data Technician; I develop software for GIS ship tracking, Metadata, external tool collection and data modeling. I bought the PS3 when it first came out for 2 reasons, backward compatibility with the PS and PS2 and being able to install Linux.

I use my PS3 for gaming, but I'm also heavy into development on it, although it's not my main development machine. I also use other Linux features. The other OS feature was what gave the PS3 an edge over the Xbox for me. After this incident, unless Sony re-enables the feature, I will never buy another Sony product. I will also not only not recommend the PS3 or PS4 or PS5 to anyone that ask me for tech advice, I will right out tell everyone to NOT BUY SONY PRODUCTS. You never know when they might decide to disable the feature to play images on to that nice big TV screen.

In Canada there is the Prim Minister (Who really has no more power then his party has seats in the house) and the house. There's also the senate, but their just appointed friends of the government of the time that get a free ride for the rest of their lives.

I dislike it when people degrade protest for human rights by comparing it to a protest for fair value on entertainment.

A Protest has to be a large enough population relative to the scale of the organization of power and the local visibility in order to be effective. Some times it takes time for a protest to be notice and people are going to try and stop it, conceal it or vilify it. So others don't join in.

That is exactly the type of spin the *IAA and other industries are trying to put on piracy. It's misdirection, a technique used by magicians and politicians. Make people think something that's working isn't so others don't get involved because it seems like the protesters are shallow and uninformed. Piracy itself is a "problem" created in order to take stock holders focuses off the real problem, which is people are getting screwed and are saying, "I'm not going to pay for that because {you're nickle and dimeing me || you want my arms AND legs || you don't want me to use something I paid you for || you want complete control over everything I do if I use your product}". Causing a loss in profits. Piracy is a way out so the company can say, "It's not our fault, look how many hundreds of millions of billions of people would have bought our product if it wasn't being stolen"

Not buying the product is the protest and companies are taking notice and saying their losing billions because people who would have bought their product aren't. If I download something I like, I buy it. If I download something that's crap I don't. It's close minded people like you who think there is only ever one way to go about something that devalue the actions of anyone that disagree with your point of view that is enabling the corporations and government to get away with murder.

They probably have a slue of slim owners who are complaining they don't have that option and it's probably easier for Sony to remove it from existing PS3s then to add it in to the slim which is much cheaper to make. I use Linux on my PS3, but I bet most of the population that owns a PS3 doesn't even know they have that choice. Most non-technical users don't even use Linux on their PC let alone on their gaming console.

I don't know the details, but I know my sister's XBox ended up with the RRoD and it cost her almost the price of a new XBox to get it fixed. I have a PS3, a laptop and a Wii I use for gaming. Each provides a different utility. PS3 is for RPGs and platforms, laptop for RTS and MMORPG and the Wii for my wife and when we have friends over. My wife and I each also have a DS. The issue with getting just a Wii is the games aren't really for hardcore gamers. The games are fun, but they're the kind of games you can pick up and play for a few hours then get sick of them and move onto something else. At least in my experience, the Wii is mostly for my wife so I have tried not to take a huge interest in it. That would upset her because I'm better at just about everything else so on occasion when I play a game with her and she wins it makes her happy. Too bad I really wanted to get A boy and his Blob. I liked that game when I was younger.
