..whilst wrong about the source of X-rays (sorry), the post is still interesting and informative extra information about black holes for those too lazy to use google to look around, and should be modded up accordingly (not that I give a damn, I suspect that if I posted flamebait for the next two years my karma would still be Excellent)
The post is factual and should be rated above a 1. Probably doesn't merit a 5, but somewhere inbetween is fine.
...what I'm sure every Slashdot reader wants to know is whether you tried it out in "that" sort of way. Is a TiVO remote a suitable challenger to a Rampant Rabbit?
This is the reason why Stephen Hawking is so famous. The theory is his baby.
Black holes evaporate as a result of the fact that quantum theory allows particles to be created near the boundary of the black hole. Particles are created in pairs (particle + antiparticle) and they normally annihilate one another when created in this way. However on the edge of a black hole, one particle may fall in whilst the other is then free to escape.
IANAP (anyone with a physics/ astronomy degree is free to expand/ correct outright lies in the above)
Probably uses SI (metric) units for all its calculations and distances, but translates them in PR releases because the average American wouldn't know how big a metric unit is.
The last time it used non-metric units, I believe was the occasion its previous Mars probe became a cropper....
Mach 1.x (or is it 2.x) capable aircraft means you will get from A to B faster than any Mach 0.7 business jet. Plus the fact that (unloaded) it can probably take off from strips your average business jet would not be happy with....
I'm coming increasingly to believe the space station is a bit of a dead duck and the issues that prevented the location of ISS in a higher orbit should have been addressed, so that it could do something really useful - like being a base where servicing missions can start and end from.
Then one would deliver a true shuttle which would flit between ISS and whatever hardware needed upgrading. Fuel and personel would be delivered to the space station alone as a starting and ending point.
[evil twisted thought]..why use rohypnol when you could slip this cocktail into someones drink and have them believe they were in love with you, and behaving normally? [/evil twisted thought]
We all know that Java has its perceived flaws and many people say that, whilst Java is good, if they were doing it again, they would not go the same route.
So what I ask is - why not design an open source Java type language and libraries for the next decade, and start from basics all over again?
Like many people on Slashdot, I don't believe absolutely everything must be free in the fullest sense of the word. Companies have a right to keep their products as closed if they wish to. If we truly believe open source is better then we should design a new Java equivalent from beginning to end.
...but in actuality I suspect very few organisations have audited the 20-50 odd million lines of code that make either a Windows release or Linux distribution.
...but governments and organisations should be exercising a modicum of care over who they get their source and binaries from. Thats what MD5 checksums and trusted sources are there for.
Open source development is not truly open to everybody; it is normally open to everyone who you allow to contribute code to your project. They've normally proved themselves by offering bug fixes and mionor changes directly to you beforehand.
The barriers to inserting malicious code in closed source are lower, not higher. Many an engineer has inserted a backdoor in his code which he surrepticiously used to help customers who lose passwords or setup info. However, a backdoor is just another way for a cracker to break into the system. Also bored engineers often leave Easter eggs in their closed source, something hard to do when several thousand people may review your code to see what makes it tick. In mainstream projects like Linux kernel, the bar to being allowed to contribute code is quite high, and your initial attempts are likely to be looked on with scorn by other project members.
As for costing huge amounts of money, one wonders what cost MyDoom has been costing owners of that wonderful example of closed source software - Windows.
i>One problem I have found is that they look like a cyclist's rear light, so on a road with these posts you can mistakely think that a cyclist's light is just a marker post.
I though cyclists rear lights were "aim car here" markers!
It sometimes does not take a signature to change a contract.
If you sign a document with some crossed out clauses and they start your employment, they may be implicitly accepting your contract changes. In UK law, and probably in other jurisdictions, there is a "last shot" effect in contract law, especially if you manage to receive your first paycheck under the terms you last agreed to. It strengthens your hand once you receive consideration for work performed under the last agreed terms.
You have to be careful about this though - it doesn't always apply.
The above article, on Linux not having controls to ensure that contributed code is not protected by copyright was the most ignorant piece of junk written. It's interesting to note that when IBM took over a software company, they found numerous open source code contributions inserted into their closed product, and reduced the sale cost of the company by approximately 12 million dollars to allow for the cost of remedying this fact. Linux version control is probably not perfect, but it is transparent and public, and where copyright/ patent transgressions have been found, code has been removed or rejected.
The latest article proposes a totally repugnant idea, the total control of online media. As he mentioned, not all of us live in China, but unfortunately about 25% of the population do, and total government control would be anathema to those people brave enough to oppose the regime.
The internet arose from secure military communications, and later a need for scientists and engineers to diseminate papers and information worldwide. Hundreds of thousands of people have contributed to its development and the results are enjoyed by hundreds of millions. While we may not approve of the child we've created, in general it gives us what we as individuals want, not what Nanny thinks is good for us. There is no denying the internet is exploited by some people, but that is universally true of all theatres of life. Even if the government ran it, can you guarentee that noone would exploit the system? The most classic exploitation has often had the connivance of members of the government.
In addition, anonymity is precious on the net. It should be hard for people to be traced if they do not want to be. This fact alone allows freedom of expression. If Bill wants a different net, he's free to go and develop it.
...since the code is available for free download from SCO's server, can they confirm that no Iranian, Korean or Cuban has downloaded it from *their* site?

You think you had it bad? I lived in a cardboard box in the middle of the motorway....
OK, the real story:-)
When I first got into Linux, I started on a miserable 486DX33, with less than 1GB for disc space. Yet still I managed to compile and develop complete Linux applications.
Trademarks are generally restricted to a specific field, so Microsoft will only be a good trademark claim for Windows with anything to do with computers and computer programs.
Mike Rowe was unfortunate in that Microsoft make a web design package (Windows FrontPage) and therefore his web design service infringed on Microsofts trademark.

For a word for computer, .... the group settled on "mudasobwa," which roughly translates to "something or someone that does not make mistakes."
.... then!
Obviously not used to computer programs, bugs, crashes, buffer overflows

Where are the Mandrake rpms ? For us folks who have powerless laptops, compiling is not an option.
Compiling *is* an option for laptops or any other low power machine.
Start before going to bed (or to all-night rave), wake up to shiny new X GUI!

so if they sold themselves as "lindows" instead of "Lindows" they could still market?
