Oh man, Phantasmagoria was one of the worst adventure games ever. A passable concept at the time(interactive movie more than a game, you could beat it in a couple hours if your CD-ROM drive was fast enough), but Lord, what poor implementation. I think I spent more time changing CDs than actually playing the game. Bo-ring. And not creepy.

At least 75% of the time I try to watch something, it skips, or audio drops out, or there are horrendous artefacts, or it just won't start. We actually considered ordering an On Demand movie last weekend, but when the preview wouldn't even play, we gave up and watched Jason X on Showtime instead.

I can detect an autotune-processed track within seconds of hearing it, due to the utter piano-like lack of pitch sensitivity and expression.

Unlikely. For every "Only God Knows Why" there are a hundred other songs that have been tweaked with an autotuner here and there, or along the entire vocal track, and you'd never know it. As with any musical skill, audio production is an art, and a skilled engineer can correct pitches so that all but the most sensitive ears can't pick it out. I can't guarantee it, but I'd say it's quite likely that nearly every song you hear on rock or pop radio today has been pitch-corrected somewhere along the line. It's a powerful tool that can turn a great vocal take into a superb one. Just because some artists are using it as a special effect (something I really dislike) doesn't mean that's the only way to do it.

Unfortunate, though, that it's so slow; the video of it drawing some peanuts seems to go on forever, and most of the time you can't tell what it's doing. It's certainly interesting, but more performance art than anything else.

Unfortunately, this was not a one-off manufacturing error. A friend purchased the same drive about a month later, and his died the same crash-and-burn death as mine about two weeks later. Sounds like these drives just suck. I'm using the replacement they sent me, but only until I can get the scratch together to replace it with a Seagate.

Sure, many Ivies could provide "free" educations -- and many (Princeton, notably, and Harvard, at least, although I'm sure the others, too) will provide absurd amounts of financial aid to the truly needy. But it's all about perceived value. This is one of the (many) problems Linux has on the desktop and in the business place -- something that's "free" can't be very good, can it? By continuing to charge $30k+/year in tuition and fees, the Ivies can maintain their elite status, while at the same time quietly providing free rides to the bottom 5% or so, income-wise.

People, think about what you're saying. Pornography (at least the modern sort) is shot for the small screen. The very small screen. Nineteen inch televisions or, even worse, computer monitors. As a result, its directors often go for the extreme closeup, usually to great effect.

Now think about these closeups on IMAX. Gaping orifices of every level of hygeine standing several stories high? I don't know about you, but that sounds more "nauseating" than "erotic."

So please, think twice before you request porn on the (really) big screen. This has been a public service announcement(TM).

I remember when I was looking at a Tascam USB sound device that there were warnings about using with AMD chips -- apparently, the USB controller common to motherboards supporting AMD chips was (in some way) incompatible with this device and caused all sorts of bizarre effects (sometimes). I remember that someone on the message board said that he had gotten it to work correctly, but many others had trouble. In any case, if you've got an AMD chipset and want this (and it won't work natively), go out and get a cheap PCI USB controller or something.

You're missing the point -- the threat here isn't on the desktop. MS simply isn't afraid of Linux on the desktop, and with good cause. The conflict here is in server-land: shops fed up with HP/IBM/Digital UNIX solutions are migrating to Linux on Intel hardware; MS wants them on Win2K. The threat here isn't Linux encroaching on MS's existing server market, but rather devouring its potential market, which may or may not exist (moving your environment from Digital UNIX to Linux seems to make more sense than from the same to Win2k, doesn't it?).
