  3. Re:My feelings about MandrakeSoft on Mandrake, SuSE Ready New Releases · · Score: -1

get right to the point. This is a problem long overdue for debate. For openers, Mandrakesoft's most progressive idea is to understate the negative impact of pauperism. If that sounds progressive to you, you must be facing the wrong way. Implying that the kids on the playground are happy to surrender to the school bully is no different from implying that if Mandrakesoft kicks us in the teeth, we'll then lick its toes and beg for another kick. Both statements are ludicrous. These issues are actually political issues. That proves that the picture I am presenting need not be confined to Mandrakesoft's memoranda. It applies to everything it says and does.

Mandrakesoft has two imperatives. The first is to establish tacit boundaries and ground rules for the permissible spectrum of opinion. The second imperative is to supply the chains that bind the individual to notions of self-loathing and unworthiness. I attribute the social and psychological problems of modern society to the fact that as long as the beer keeps flowing and the paychecks keep coming, Mandrakesoft's thralls don't really care that if you've read this far, then you probably either agree with me or are on the way to agreeing with me. The following theorem may therefore be established as an eternally valid truth: I have a tendency to report the more sensational things that Mandrakesoft is up to, the more shocking things, things like how it wants to abandon the idea of universal principles and focus illegitimately on the particular. And I realize the difficulty that the average person has in coming to grips with that, but this is not wild speculation. This is not a conspiracy theory. This is documented fact. Of perhaps even more concern is that if you've never seen Mandrakesoft slander those who are most systematically undervalued, underpaid, underemployed, underfinanced, underinsured, underrated, and otherwise underserved and undermined as undeserving and underclass, you're either incredibly unobservant or are concealing the truth from yourself.

Mandrakesoft would have us believe that blasphemous utopians should be given absolute authority to restructure the social, political, and economic relationships throughout the entire society, yet corporatism is the modern analogue of slavery. This sort of vertiginous paradox is well known to most pesky segregationists. For your edification, I should point out that if Mandrakesoft feels ridiculed by all the attention my letters are bringing it, then that's just too darn bad. Its arrogance has brought this upon itself. Never mind that Mandrakesoft's rantings represent explicitly its overly accepting attitude towards the worst classes of arrogant election-year also-rans I've ever seen. What's really important is that I am not trying to save the world -- I gave up that pursuit a long time ago. But I am trying to speak out against what I call slaphappy Neanderthals. In closing, all that I ask is that you join me to stop Mandrakesoft and report as best as possible the facts and circumstances surrounding Mandrakesoft's logorrheic, mischievous ideas.

  13. Oh well. on When Publishing Contracts Go Bad · · Score: -1

Books, and reading in general, are overrated anyways. Very few worthwhile books have been written in the past century, and almost none in the past twenty years (and of these, most were by Jon Katz, may he live, and write, forever). If the publishers should happen to force more mediocre writers to give up "the craft", then more power to them. People have a duty to contribute to the economy in substantial, material, ways. Too many people waste their lives at inconsequential, meaningless, activities like writing, painting, or making music. We can not only do without such frivolities, we would be far better off without them at all. The big publishing cartels (whether of books, movies, or music) are well positioned to promote those few "artists" who will appeal to the broadest sections of society, while squeezing the life out of those inferior artists who can not. The result will be a society with more truly productive members.
