  12. Not holding my breath on Star Wars Episode 2 Starts Shooting · · Score: 1

I love Star Wars. I've watched the entire trilogy so many times that I've gone through about 4 or 5 collections of the films on VHS (thank you DVD). IMO, the first one was OK, but rather lame. Empire was by far the superior film of the series, with Jedi coming in 2nd. What was the difference between the three? Lucas was not in complete control of Empire and Jedi. Someone else directed each of those...Lucas merely produced.

As I understand it, a big reason for this was that the actors couldn't stand working with him. Let's face it, Lucas has some sort of overly black-and-white view of his characters and how they should be. He never figured that Han Solo would be more popular than Luke...Luke's supposed to be the bad-ass hero, but c'mon...we all know that Solo's the man. So what did Lucas do with SWSE? He changed the scene where Solo kills Greedo so that Solo doesn't shoot first. Satisfies Lucas' need to have his good guys be super-good - ruins a great scene of Solo being a badass.

Back then, the actors could demand another director cause Lucas wasn't the bigshot he is today. NOW, good luck trying to get someone to out him as director. As much as I'd love to see another Empire, Jedi, or even A New Hope, I won't be holding my breath. Lucas will remain true to his flat, saccharine characters and storylines from 25 years ago...trying to make up for weak plot with special effects.

Of course, I'll still go see it cause I'm one of the many mindless fans who will go see anything that might be a good SW film.

Technical people tend to feel very strongly about their platforms...it's almost religious. Saying that anyone who posts something about M$ in a positive light is a spy sent here to post FUD is ludicrous. There are those among us who like working on/with M$ products, and who obviously feel that they should have a voice in this forum as well as the people who prefer LINUX, UNIX, Mac, or whatever. 17. This is old stuff on Copyrant · · Score: 1

Like the article said, some OEM's have been doing this for a while. A certain MAJOR OEM has been shipping a "companion" CD with their computers rather than an actual copy of the OS for at least 3 years...and then it wasn't even an MS requirement. I don't like the idea of not getting a copy of the software I purchase for my computer or not being able to move said software to a new computer (should the old one self-destruct or become too old or whatever). Tying the software to the specific hardware is too restrictive...but I can see why the software companies want to do it. Who among us doesn't know some person who has probably more than $15000 worth of pirated software like 3DStudio, various games, etc. Granted, there is a lot of stuff out there that you can get for free without pirating, but that doesn't mean that everyone goes and uses it. This is a case of punishing everyone for the actions of a few. I don't agree with the measures being recommended or talked about...but it has to make you think about what their alternative options are.

My friends and I tried it out, and if you've got say, a rocket launcher, you can't make it accross a room without slowing to a crawl. At first we thought it was pretty cool...but after about 20 minutes of playing while wondering if you should be running or walking with that shotgun and body armer, we decided to go back to just run all the time. The other nice option is realistic damage, which means if you get shot in the head, you die...armor or no. Anyway, I had a point...yes, the realism can be somewhat fun, but really the most fun (IMHO) comes from running around with a lot of guns killing as many people as possible until you can't straighten your fingers.

  19. Been there, done that, got the T-Shirt to prove it on Thoughts On Third-Party DSL Providers? · · Score: 1

Same thing happens all over the country. The local phone companies do have an unfair advantage when it comes to DSL lines. I don't know how it is on the East Coast, but here in California, PacBell requires third party installations of DSL to install a second, separate line ($$ for PB), whereas when PB does it, they install it over your main line. To combat this, a lot of the 3rd parties offer better services. PB's services max out at 128kbps upstream (unless you want to pay almost $200/month), and your upstream and downstream aren't separate (you can't do both simultaneously). I used to have DSL through Covad/Internet Express and for $80/month got 768kbps down and 384 kbps up...simultaneously. I loved it. Unfortunately I moved, and at my new place PB told my ISP they'd have to do some trenching ($100/hour) for DSL unless I went with PB over my main line. So now I have cable...and it's pretty good...I miss having a steady speed all the time, but its better than dealing with the local phone thugs.
