    Do they have a problem that doesnt fit the constructs of the languages available?
    If so, define the problem so I can see the usefulness of a new programming paradigm.
    If not, a new language is not needed.

    Often times it seems (to me) that crazy languages are created by crazy people who dont know how to program.

    I concur with your statements. However, there are still many questions unanswered about the pyramids. I dare say finding true north is not the most difficult part of stacking all those stones.

    On a side note: I want to see the robot "Upuat" explore more of the air-shafts.

  6. I dont see the usage. on Distributed Operating Systems? · · Score: 1

    To me, an OS manages the resources of a single machine. The job of allocating time and space seems like a minor computational task. Why would a distributed operating system be better? The decision of which user gets a block of a disk seems like a small computation task.

    However when the computational need is large, ie rc5/seti/etc, then distribution becomes important. It looks like a user space issue, not an operating system issue.

    A single distributed client could handle multiple tasks and be directed to work on different problems at different times in a distributed/cooperative manner. It looks like a user space problem.

    How do you handle people who dont want to share there disk space or memory?

    Maybe I misunderstand what a distributed operating system is.

    Im just thinking if a modem has the "feature" to allow call waiting to "work", then people wont dial *70. Then when they play some low latency game, they will forget to re-add *70.

    Right now it is easy, everyone simply disables call waiting because you get hung up.

    Looks alot like ADA to me. Military applications are often required to use ada because of the strong type checking. Alot of people dont like ADA because they are more comfortable with C syntax. It looks like they are trying to make an "ADA" with "C" syntax.

    Answer this question and you will see the benefit of crusoe over other low power chips.

    Why not make a graphical keyboard application and then they would have to record mouse clicks..

    I don't know where windows would capture the keystroke? Keyboard driver, or GUI widget inputs?

    If its keyboard driver, then mouse clicks would fix the situation..

    Or just install linux. :)

    The web tracking is a different problem. :)

    Well, I haven't ever used a palmtop... But what I am looking for is a cheap box that can run any unix so that I can have an MP3 Player, that can have a wireless ethernet card, a microphone, speakers, web cam. I want them to be cheap so that I can put them around the house and have one to go on the road with.. (Portable MP3 Player / PDA)

    I don't know if the current stock of palmtop/pda machines can really have all of these features (no USB port, no PCMCIA, parallel port, serial port, etc) Let alone the ability to run lynx over the wireless ethernet card.. (Or maybe netscape with a special version of X)..

    The possibilities for a small PC are much greater than the current crop of PDA/Palms...

    Dont you think?

    On this page it says Dan E. Steimle (The current Transmeta CFO) was the CFO for Hybrid Networks.

    The lawsuit is against Hybrid Networks and the CFO of the company.

    I know that money isn't a big topic around here, but everyone wants to know when Transmeta is going to IPO.. I was looking at the names of the top people in Transmeta and the Chief Financial Officer would be the most likely to have the details and plans for an IPO. So I decided to research the dude...

    Went to google and the first thing that came up was a lawsuit against the guy buy stock holders of a company called "Hybrid Networks". They are charging him and others with Securities fraud. The defendents demanded a trial by jury.

    This makes me nervous about Transmeta. Why would Dave Ditzel hire someone like this (with a grey background, and possibly pending litigation for SEC fraud)????

    Scarry... Anyone have any thoughts?

    Best thing about the movie was the soundtrack.. Very excellent techno feel. Orbital / Underworld / Angelo Badalemnti / etc.. Full 5 channel techno in the openning sequence just made me drool..

    The music rocked.. I dug it a great deal.. Check out the soundtrack if you can..

    I really wish Transmeta would release the specification for the VLIW core. It would be great to make it a GCC target.

    However, I understand that Transmeta wants to keep the VLIW secret so that they can change it with no consequence.

    I personally feel that if some people want to compile to a core that is going to change in the future, it should be there choice, not Transmeta's.

    That would be my issue.

    I would hope the speed would be worth it. Even though you aren't going to get run-time optimization. (run-time branch prediction, etc.) To skip the code morphing layer should make the processor "THAT" much faster. Then they could compete on the desktop.

    How do you know the file contains "the spoils of his crimes" ??

    You are assuming he is guilty.. He has not been tried for any of the contents of the 1G encrypted files.

    It could be something that is personally valuable to him.

    Plainly, the judge was retarded..
    1) Encryption was VERRRY clever of him.
    2) She assumes its dangerous without knowing and violates his rights.

    I would love to see something like this get to the supreme court. I trust them to be smart enough to figure out the right answer.

    How smart do you think these "ELECTED" judges are?

    As much as I hate polotics, some smarter peeps need to run for some offices, whether its to be judges or whatever. We need competent elected officials. All we have are good shmoozers.

  19. What C Compilers/Language needs. on Transmeta Code Morphing != Just In Time · · Score: 1

    For processors that are not made by transmeta, what the C Language needs is a way for the programmer to tell the compiler extra information.

    For instance if you have a 'case' statement or an 'if' statement. We should be able to tell the compiler which code path is going to be considered the most common path.

    Ive seen a good discussion of this in the kernel list. There are places in the kernel where goto's are used to accomplish what could be done if we could tell the compiler which code path is most common. I "think" some of those optimizations in the kernel are assuming your going to compile with GCC on intel to get the performance gain. Please correct me if I am wrong.

    We have the ability to defeat CSS for our viewing pleasure and that will _NEVER_ change. We are fighting for the individuals who are being targeted legally. This is very uncomfortable for all of them and we need to do whatever we can to help them... They have done so much for us.

    You watch the media. They will mis-characterize this top to bottom. "He is a haxor!"

    You can write the media to complain or gently encourage them to understand, but guess what???

    It won't matter. The MPAA is in bed with all sorts of media outlets. The MPAA has its own propaganda machine, the media.

    We all know how technically incapable the majority of our society is.. They are going to buy every word the media throws at them.

    The governments can be bought off... And they have the money to do it..

    I am at a loss for any possible answers.

    I dont think that Y2k is the end.

    Things that are more dangerous than Y2k:
    * Earth Crust Displacement Theory (If it is true)
    * Meteor Impact


    Adam and Eve for Y2k makes no sense.. There are so many tiny cultures all over the earth that have no use for electricity/computers. Why would they even know about y2k or the problems it would cause?

    Adam and Eve for comet impact may not be possible unless we diversify our population (I mean create civilizations on other terrestrial spheres (moon/mars)). This is the biggest reason we should be in favor of space exploration funding.

    Everything happens in cycles..

    It's fun to see /. talk about religion/theology. A while back (months) /. had articles on creation being tought in high schools, and posters were outraged at how behind the times some state was. I was kinda ticked off by the attitude. This relates to the current thread how?

    1.a) There are great reasons to believe in God
    1.b) There are great reasons to be an athiest

    2.a) There are great reasons to believe in creation
    2.b) There are great reasons to believe in evolution

    A good book that questions both of these topics is "The 12th planet" by Zecharia Sitchin.

    Maybe it is a mix of God and No God.
    Maybe it is a mix of creation and evolution.
