MySQL doesn't have: Record locking; every serious db-application, web-based or not, needs locking on record-level; table-locking will not do.
Transactions / Rollback. If a database has rollback-options, you can use those to back out of complex update; without rollback, you need a lot more code. How to make a sig without having an idea

Sorry to say this, but alhough a book like this is actually a good idea, the presentation seems a bit silly; why print over 40.000 lines of code, while at the same time they are included on CD (or in most people's Linux distribution for that matter). This looks like a massive waste of trees, a more interactive way would be an good initiative. How to make a sig without having an idea

I don't think that I am fighting the wrong fight here!
Instead of whining and complaining, just try to set up your own record company, and try to sell your music in another way than CD's. I think that if you would try that, your company wouldn't last very long, because everybody would be copying and stealing your music. You just try to think of a way to distribute music AND make (some) money at the same time (not the same amount as the big record companies, those b*astards make way to much money). How to make a sig without having an idea
I cannot understand this intellectual property crap when it comes to music.
I make something, you buy something; that has been the basis for economics since thousands of years. The fact that music (and software) is easy to copy doesn't change a thing - it is theft! You think that just because it's not a solid object, it's suddenly "intellectual property"??
Please think again! How to make a sig without having an idea
So, just because music and for example booktexts, are not physical objects, it's allright to label it as 'intellectual property'?
I think it simply like this: I make something, and other people can buy that, whatever the form. The things that I make can be physical objects, but also advice or a service of some kind.
No matter how you label things, it's still theft! How to make a sig without having an idea
It looks like this is (again!) turning into an "us and them" discussion (Microsoft vs. Linux/opensource world).
I thinkt that that is not the point; this is all about having choices! It maybe true that everyone wants a pc, but it would be very nice if you could choose what OS and what software to run. And that has not been the case in the last few years; thanx to the attitude of Microsoft you had no choice but to use their software. And there is no way you can convince me that a monopoly is good for either the market as a whole or for innovation! br How to make a sig without having an idea
They already *did* that with Terraserver; why repeat the excercise?
I admit that it is good PR, in complete contrast to the commercial that they are running on Discovery Channel Europe: in that commercial they urge us to pay for all our licenses, otherwise we would be very sorry. Talk about Jekkyl & mr Hyde;)
The big question is: where is the catch? (also goes for the terraserver). Meaning, what does a completely commercial company like Micro~1 hope to gain from setting up such a server ? Makes me wonder...
I think it all depends on a) the type of software you are writing Bussiness aplication should be standardized as much as possible, tools and "fun" programs should be more tunable/configurable.
b) the type of users you are writing for What is the target audience of your software: Bussiness type users or hackers/nerds: there is quite a difference in what they want and use.
"are ignoring visual and interface standards that users have come to rely on" What standards, those in Windows, where every program defines it's own standards?
For a very good site on GUI design and common errors therein, look here br
You could write about a SWAT team of elven, that could go out, find the ring and be back before lunch, but that would hardly be an interesting read, would it????
Thanks to prof. Sykes for sharing this with the world, we could never have worked this out all by ourselves:)
Apart form the fact that this doesn't work for larger groups of people with the same surname, there are a few other problems: Not in every country in the world is the child named after the father.
For example in Island, the surname of a child is composed of the *first* name of the father, followed by the indication of the gender: The daughter of Sigmund will be called "Sigmundsdottir" (daughter of Sigmund). His son will be called Sigmundsson. Etc...
In the country where I live (Netherlands), people are free to choose whether the child will be called after the mother or the father
Who is going to define the rules & guidelines by which the ISP should monitor their traffic. Or, when is something offensive, and when is something considered as free speech?
This is once again an example of how the spirit of the (old) internet is being destroyed
Why is it when we think of other intelligences, we always imagine they are peaceful? Why is it that when we think of other intelligences, that they *are* intelligent. When you study evolutionairy biology, you will soon find out that intelligence is just *one* of the methods of survival, but not necesarily *the* way. Intelligence is definately not an end-goal of evolution, it's just one of the ways in which life can develop. What is relevant is the eventual decline in curiosity as ability and technology increase. I think it is a bit arrogant to believe that in the near future all the mysteries will be solved. There are many many problems that are completely out of our reach; for some problems it is feared that our brains will never be able to grasp them!

Why did people sail out to discover new worlds, why do people climb mountains, sail the oceans and cross deserts? It lies in our nature to discover new things, to be curious. Maybe there are ways to amplify these aspects. Another thing maybe is avoiding 'bad press', like crashing Mars-explorers and blowing up Space shuttles. These were tragedies, but mostly due to budget cuts and ignorance. These sorts of things can give science & space exploration a bad name.
I think that the press and the public will *never* be interested in science, unless: a) there is money to be made b) it has a direct benefit for mankind The problem with science and new discoveries lies in the fact that you never know beforehand what will come of it; you can compare this with research & development work in the IT world. At least 50 to 75% of the work will never see the daylight in terms of new software; but if you don't try, nothing ever changes. I think the only thing that can be done is to make ends meet, and try to work with the available budget (if any); I really wouldn't know how to get the public's attention. Maybe make space the new and exciting location for a new gameshow?;)

Agree, but that was more patriotism than a *genuine* interest in science & space travel. That's being interested for the wrong reasons!
