Or, when their disk dies, mom and pop usually return their PC to their friendly CompUSA or BestBuy store and get a replacement for either the disk or the whole unit, with the Windows magically preinstalled on it.
I recently met an elderly couple who didn't even understand the concept of hard disk, yet successfully used their PC for the last 4 years.

I would think that AOL is also planning to either introduce a hardware platform of their own to run their Linux and AOL client on, or pick somebody else's rather rigid platform, since it would be next to impossible for them to support *every* type of modem and hardware configuration modern PCs have to offer under Linux (as we are painfully aware as Linux users). Just think WinModems and PCChips integrated motherboards.
This deal would then validate the idea of Sony-Linux-TimeWarnerAOL axis (PlayStation II/III running Linux as a host OS for AOL, which would provide dialup and/or broadband access for online gaming and e-mail and web browsing), which would compete against Microsoft XBox-MSN-AT&T (if I'm not mistaken) combo.

No servers were broken in any way during this exercise.
Client hardware used: Dell OptiPlex GX1 (PIII-500, 128MB RAM, 6GB HD).
This machine also had a test of Office XP Standard installed on it, and the machine seemed to be reasonably responsive (you could work on it without noticeable slowdowns), although I think this setup would definitely benefit from extra 128MB RAM.
News Break: Final version of Client 4.82 for WinXP has been released on 12/12/01. You can download it here:

From my experience with Solaris/Linux on a same drive I can tell you that you should start from scratch, installing Solaris first (in the space you have empty in hda1), then reinstalling Linux after that.

I just finished installing Solaris 8 x86 on a middle of the road PC, (EFA Viking 3:VIA MVP3 Chipset, UDMA33 with AMD K6-2 450, 256MB RAM, Matrox G220 AGP, Intel EEPro/100) on an empty 10 GB drive and it was such an ordeal that I am planning to put Linux back on it. Hardware recognition (and conflict resolution) was nonexistent, and the whole installation dreadfully slow - it took me over 2 hours to install Binaries 1 and 2 and an additional 45 minutes for the Companion CD.

Everything has settled now, but the system is rather slow. I know that I am running it on not-so cutting edge hardware, but this box used to fly with pretty much any Linux distribution I would throw on it.

  17. An Example of Java+Apache+Tomcat in action on Will Open Source Lose the Battle for the Web? · · Score: 2, Informative

(Before I continue - no, I am not a Novell employee, and no, Novell is not dead)
I think Ganesh is on to something here - the only way to compete with .NET is to build something around some other (non-MS) technology.
Novell did exactly that - created a portal environment by combining Open Source, XML and Java components, while using the existing directory structure for authentication. It is still in early stages, but it does work, and it works incredibly well.
Before I see eyes rolling - yes, portals are basically warmed over web pages, but it is a corporate buzzword du jour. Your average CIO/CTO loves it, and will allow unholy amounts of money to be spent on it.
How does it work? You have an Apache/Tomcat combo sitting on one of four supported platforms (NT, NetWare, Linux or Solaris) and JDK with JNDI. (Java Naming and Directory Interface) When you log in, JNDI taps into your existing LDAP3-supported directory for authentication and profiles (Novell of course hopes you will be using NDS/eDirectory), and presents you with cutomized, pre-formated page (done with XML/XSLT) that contains your mailbox, calendar, MetaFrame apps, news, queries your databases via JDBC, etc.
And now the kicker - because Novell is using Open Source and Java components, this product is about three times cheaper than the first comparable solution - something even CFOs might appreciate.
Why I like this so much? I gives Linux foot in the door. Now I can actually *justify* using a Linux box for a web/application server instead of IIS, and once it proves itself as more stable and secure, more will follow. It may look like a small victory, but wars are usually won that way.
Oh yeah, and an obligatory link:

I had a similar experience with them couple of months ago when they started messing around with DHCP servers - I couldn't get a new lease no matter what I tried, and my old address was taken by somebody else.
It also didn't help that I had one of those blue LinkSys 4-port hubs/routers and no Windows anywhere in sight. The way to milk your static IP from them is to play *really* dumb Windows user("Ummm, where is the Start button?" dumb), and then they'll guide you through step by step. First time around they'll still try to set up your IP settings to use DHCP. Of course, you tell them it's still not working, then they'll have to tell you your new static IP/subnet/gateway/etc. You thank them to the stars, they fell happy, you feel happy. The whole process doesn't take longer than 10-15 minutes (factor in two imaginary Windows reboots). Worked like a charm!
Now I hear they started distributing new version of their client software (Win/Mac only) that also comes with "diagnostic tools" to help you reestablish your connection in case something goes wrong....Hope my little social engineering skit will still work....:)
