  5. Re:Can WINE talk directly to hardware? on Wine In New Skins · · Score: 2

As far as I can recall, wine can be configured to access parallel and serial ports. Other emulators, like VMWare can do the same. And, might I add, for running programs that don't use ActiveX type stuff, VMWare is a lot better than wine, but you need a copy of Windows installed on the computer.

  6. Re:"Mistakes"? on Poe Puzzle Patiently Pondered · · Score: 1

I seem to recall that this was actually standard practice back when encryption was done by hand or mechanical device. Operators used abbreviations, purposely misspelled things, and dropped unnecessary letters. It was also standard practice to spell words differently if they were used more than once. Basically, all this did was mess up attempts at frequency counts and pattern matches (like seeing "tyi" 8 times in one message. It becomes pretty obvious that "tyi" is "the" or "and"). Modern cyptographic techniques are powerful enough to make the cyphertext of a message totally random, so that analysis will not reveal any patterns.

Several years ago, at my high school, the "in crowd" got together and had a very shy, nervous, and, honestly, not pretty girl elected to the homecoming court. I her case, she got lucky. One of the most popular guys in school (also on the homecoming court with his date, and expected to win), droped his date and went with her. They didn't win anything, but it shows that at least some of the "cool" people have a heart.

  8. I love Beta! on The PS2 - A Betamax In the Making? · · Score: 1

I am pretty sure that I am actually the only person left on the planet who owns a Betamax. It still works great, even though it is the size of my first PC.

The Beta/VHS thing goes to show, the man with more marketing wins. Even though Sony has a huge marketing department, MS (for all intents and purposes) has a lock on the game market.

It wouldn't be too far-fetched to believe in a Windows/X-box compatibility layer, enabling Windows developers to quickly jump to the X-box, giving MS yet another leg up on the competition.
