    I'm just waiting for the day we see John Madden branded video cards. Hey why not go a step further and load the games on to the graphic cards. Now that would be "working together"

    Seriously though I can't see why this is a huge deal apart from it might mean the EA get some slightly better locking games. Its not like NVidia would lock out everyone else. Would they?

    One reason for Redhat going from 8 -> 9. Purely marketing. Normally people expect high numbers are better however it always become when someone releases version 11 of something. Is that v1.1 or v12? Lots of fun :)

    Can't argue with that. Also companies might want the support that can be offered from a commerical company. A mentalitity I've noticed is that companies don't think support is decent unless you pay for it. I thing that the mailing lists for things normally do fill this need but don't necessarily offer that someone will actually get an answer

    For cross communication I belive that only AOL/ICQ work. The nearest I've really seem to come to cross network is using gaim as client which at least allows me to see other peeps in one window rather than having to run 3 or 4 different messaging programs

    Or we could just all use IRC

    So this costs $30 per user and no mention of the client software requirements. Will they just be Solaris or Linux/Windows/Solaris? As other people have said why not just role out jabber?

    With Sun: For a 100 person organsiation cost = $3000 + implementation time
    With Jabber: implementation time

    BIt of a no brainer?

    One things that I don't see mention of is contention ratios. I can quite happily supply 100 customers a line capable of carrying 512. But if I only have a 2MB leased line filling all of that then they are going to complain but buy definition it would still be broadband. Prehaps it would be better to say something like

    "512K is broadband when it can be sustained for 99% of the time" or something similar

    Wether you believe it or not your parents are doing only because they care. You might not think it now but you will look back at some point and realise they are doing what they think is best for you.

    As for the privacy issues ok prehaps its not so great but at least they are trying even though a custom username/password combination might be better

    Yeah going to have to agree here. However for the UK (and maybe other EU) countries it is a general rule that mobile number begin with 07xxx. If you see a phone number you can tell if it is a landline or mobile. Within the US all the numbers are intermingled and you can't tell what a number connects to short of asking

    OK I'm not to hot on this but does any CPU with a cache do this such as holding the program in one set of registrars and the data in another. I have a vague memory of itaniums doing this but could be horribly wrong

    To me this looks like another old media giving way to new media. The internet is bringing us all together etc. New levels of information freedom *cough*. I thinks its a cool idea but I do hope there will some examples of how the internet hasn't yet beaten things like TV for getting information across to a wide audience quickly and effectivly

    So what you are saying is that you bought a chip for a of hardware you paid for and own so you could use it how you wanted? Next you will be telling me that you have a video recorder and record whatever you want off TV. Or god forbid prehaps even a computer that you can do whatever you want on...

    In a previous life I worked at Dec^W Compaq ^W HP as a low end grunt, Moving/installing PC's etc For this I was a temp but found the atmosphere to be really nice. Now admitally at the time I was very green but even then I noticed that for the christmas party them temps got left behind. We then had our own party where we paid for a meal out. From the on in I realised there was a definite them/us where opinions didn't seem to matter so much and ideas not heard

    Now this is cool. I know that SGI can scale the Altix to 64 CPU's running 2.4 with their own additions in an SSI. However not sure about. 2.5. Its nice to see it in the main kernel anyway and the only way is up

    As with everything costs go down, so does build quality. Its starting to get to the point where I can now buy a new lexmark printer for the cost of two new cartriages from my local supermarket. Low end Lexmark £60. New cartridge £30. Its almost just worth buying a new printer when the cartridge urn out. Before long I wouldn't be surprised to see printers where you can replace the ink

    I can't see this happening until handhelds and small form factor PDA's move from their current closed upgrade paths to machines where I can install what hardware I want when I want. I don't know any PDA to which I can connect a satellite TV card and watch TV on my PC.

    One thing would be nice is to have a consitant platform for development on but is it going to be Windows CE? Personally I don't think so but it will be intresting to see how it all plays out

    The other solutions that works for me is that my email drops onto my server where I ssh in and read it via pine. Anything I don't want I delete. Spam is filtered off using spam assasin and procmail.

    Anything that is left I just download via POP3. Works, is simple and robust
