Well if you look at the Microdrive its takes a standard interface, in the form of CF which allows me to plug it into my camera, PC or whatever I want.
However from the article
"It does not employ common interfaces such as CompactFlash and ATA to connect a HDD and a host device, but uses a simple and original interface."
So basically its a propriatory interface. Its cool don't get me wrong but I don't think IBM will be scared just yet. For it to make an impact the interface it uses will have to become wide spread and I don't think that will happen taking the current number of different formats in a similar space such as SD Cards, Memory sticks etc. I'm sure it has it uses but prehaps not in the public field.
I've had a play with firewire on my home PC and for moving stuff around its great. Being able to do real time video on my machine from camcorder amke life fun. However looking at a monitor ain't. This is one of those things that would of been nice but not surprised it didn't happen. Not really their target market
Will there be an upgrade path for those of us with existing PS2's. Also I hope Sony are going to make this a PS2 - Special Edition, i.e. upgrade the CPU/graphics as well and as such they give it the ability to play new special games that won't work on the original PS2.
Now if they could have a special mode on new games that would take advantage of that cool.
Also the i.Link (firewire port is going). Only time I've seen it used is in a 3 screen display og Gran Turismo 3
Most distributions have mailing lists that you can subscribe to ask questions. You will normally get a reply of a pointer to somewhere better to get help. Some lists allow you to post even if you don't join. Just asked to be CC'd
Computer on every desk? How about getting everyone a desk first? Or prehaps decent housing to put the desk in? Or decent medical care? Or water and food? Surely that sort of thing would come first?
OK thi is just a thought off the top of my head so feel free to shut me up if I talking rubbish. Instead of making CPU's faster why not start looking at ways of creating an SMP system which can handel normal applications thorough something like branch prediction or read-ahead but on a large scale?
I would think that a decent chipset which good inter CPU communication could at least rival say 350% of the same system in a single CPU config. Also wouldn't this just dispearse the heat more?
Cool so now I can dump my PDA. All I need is for something to run Gameboy games, PDA type things be a phone and also make me a cup of tea I will be happy
Not trolling but what I think people would expect:
I like to see thing that will help Linux be accept by the masses but what I would want to make sure that any Linux distro should be able to do the following without me having to open a command window
Open MS Office files Play games Surf the net
As much a M$ might be a monopoly they have spent millions on the UI which works for 95% of the people 95% of the time. Why would someone accept anything less even if it a 1/3 or the price? I use Linux all the time and its great, but would my dad? Don't think so
Cool now when I goto a concert I don't have to have an obvious tape record/mini-disk etc. Just have my PDA and if anyone ask I'm just checking my email:)
Cool another case of the wrold gone mad. So once again I can't copy something I bought for my own private use. What about making a backup of a CD? So basically this is covering everything that can make copies of sounds and then play them back. Prehaps its time we outlawed parrots:)
I mean some of these things are stupid. Looking under the nominations there are some that really so stupid that you can't believe they are true but you know they are. Of course some might argue recent news events have been censored as well
I will say ID is cool as for example releasing the source code for doom. At least count I know you could get Doom for PC/PS-One/Gameboy and also Symbian phones. One way or another we will all see Doom III at some point:)
This is an exclusive for *console* only. However even if was just for X-BOX you don't think MS would stop it being released on PC? Theoretically porting from X-BOX should be relatively easily taking the use of DirectX etc.
However the PC is the real home of Doom. You need a mouse and keyboard for full control. Also with the easy online access is really needed for he online multiplayer expirence
I've noticed that whatever software you look at in regards to office suites they are always playing catchup to M$. Openoffice has its own format but also produces M$ formated files. Koffice. Same story.
The point is that people will always needs to make files compatible if they want to stand a chance against the monopoly that is M$. They will be able to say "Look their is competition" as in the real world it won't make one bit of difference.
Surely it wouldn't be to hard to role you own? A mini-ITX case with software raid and a couple of 120GB disk with a wireless card in the back. External CD-ROM if necessary and thats about it. Remote admin and redundancy
When you are talking about relability are you just meaning the core set of switches etc. As I can't think of anyway that you could easily make the end PC easily redundant short of having two networks cards etc. Though I suppose if everything is on the server you could just swap the PC and be up and running again in a few minutes
Even if M$ do go through with this how long before someone will hack the STB and post it on the web somewhere? Then again we could just all use mplayer:)
Have you seen NVidia drivers on Linux. Yes they are fast but I have had hard locks on a number of occasions when I start pushing them. When the drivers are more stable then I might start getting excitied. I mean I would love to be able to play games under Linux so I didn't keep rebooting but unfortunalty it ain't there yet

Not trying to be rude buy why not just spend $100 on a new DVD player than can play VCD's? Surely cheaper, easier and you can get it now
