When you force someone to give a confession, doesnt this usually happen.. The person makes things up to get a lighter sentence? It would never get past MS I dont think.
Put yourself in the shoes of the people that had their personal assets on a server that a 10year old kid could look at?
I would be Pretty Piseed. I'd also expect more, maybe foolishly, out of our own government.
So My response. Yes, I do think that that the judge did the right thing by ordering the plug pulled. The plug should be pulled on any government organization which is that insecure. Windows or not, it makes no difference.
I help (in spare time) Administer a shell provider (Techcellent.com)
What the admin did was modify bash itself.. Making a small portion of the code log something to a very obscure place that cant be accessed by anyone. Try that!.. But I think the line printer Idea is a Very Good Idea and requires the least effort
The entire point of these lawsuits against Microsoft is not that their OS is better. It does not have much to do with consumers either. People want Microsoft trash. And it is microsoft who bullies the OEMs into using their OS because the People want it.
What is the plan for huge vendors (HP, Compaq, Dell, etc.. ) that Use the same product key for thousands of machines? Will this scheme work becuase usually the software is installed on the same hardware? And what is the end user supposed to do when he buys a brand new machine, then 2 weeks later it says. "You must re-activate"
At my former high school, we had 3 groups of people: The Jocks/Cheerleaders, the Middles, and the rejects.
The "Middles" Are the ones who only knew people at school and didn't do much (socialy) outside of it. At home they would usually find hobbies that involved technology.
The Jocks/Cheerleaders were involved in all sorts of POINTLESS extra curricular activites.
The Rejects were the ones that were opposite of popular culture. They did everything outside of school.
The Anti-Social "Middle" were the ones that had a higher GPA overall.
So, Is it logical to say that if you are Anti-Social you have a better chance of being more intellegent?
No, that is not it at all. Cheating ruins the game for all players. It has nothing to do with peer to peer anything. It is a "feature" in the video drivers to allow you to see through Walls and other object, letting you see the players hiding there. How dare you compare cheating to peer to peer file sharing?
In the beginning all the hosts on the network had a 'hosts' file on their computer.
However, Yes, Later it was http://www.server.company.com mostly it still is, however with the dot-suck. Everyone wanted.coms and would do anything to get one.
Its not about the root domains either. I see it like a power company: Its hard to change providers. Besides, they arent doing anything wrong, unless you know. And DNS was meant for all these virtual hosts. The IP pool was not, however.
There are millions of other ways to get music. I dont think that people would pay for such a service. Also, more kids and teens use it than anything else. How will the pay? Credit Card? c'mon!! Napster will die.

This would be a really good place to look
for prior art for all these rediculous
patents that get granted.
for example:
I am Sure the Altavista search engine patent came AFTER this: Search Engine post
March 1988? Altavista was just a little bit later
Oh well.. I use Mozilla. Guess I cant get downgr...errr upgraded... Maybe some other day?
I would do this..

It was a stupid emulator anyways, with 10 free alternatives
Microsoft Exec: You Ididot!!!! You were supposed to use 'gcc -O2' not 'gcc -ggdb3'
Programmer: Im sorry! Ive been stealing too many GNU/MIT/BSD Code!
Also,
How do you propose to eliminate name conflicts?
" NO! My Computer is named yyy.isp.net!!"
"NO! Mine is!"
If everyone could assign their own names. It would be a disaster.
