  3. OS Exposure on Moving Your Kids to Linux? · · Score: 1

I have a home network with a Win2000 machine, iMac and a Linux box (Redhat) on it. I have introduced my daughter to all of them, showing her how to start up (particularly relevent with Linux), how to find the best game, and then have left her to solve the rest.

She now has a cross platform competancy and an appreciation of the different strengths and weaknesses of the three OS's.

She prefers the Win2000 machine for all the reasons cited here, but I do find her exploring the other two, especially the Linux box, as the challenge to do things is greater. She is part of the Nintendo generation - tapping into that is all you need to get your child interested in Linux.

In a press release Sony said that with the 220 they will encourage people to write their own software for it.... meanwhile back on the ranch they are still hassling AiboPet about the hacks he wrote for the 11x's and 210's..... Heelllloooo is there anyone in Sony who is keeping track of their latest policies???? Can we hack them or can't we???????

  7. As an multiple AIBO owner I would just like to say on Sony Uses DMCA To Shut Down Aibo Hack Site · · Score: 3, Interesting

... that without Aibopet my Aibo's would be just cute little robots that wandered about my living room and changed occasionally. With Aibopet's tools they are fascinating machines that I can watch from the inside, change, and interact with in a meaningful and interesting manner.

I have an ERS 111 and an ERS 210 and I must say that the software that was supplied with them (outside of their personality software) was limited and poor. Had I only had that to rely on I would have lost interest two days after receiving my ERS 111 and I would never had bought the 210.

Aibopet and the previous VP of Sony were able to come to an agreement that was a win win for all parties, why can't a similar thing happen with the new VP - is this some kind of power trip he is on to stamp his mark on the job! If it is he has pissed a whole heap of Aibo owners in the process.

People like Aibopet should be encouraged, he is the embodiment of what lies at the heart of the hacker ethic - he works for the good of the Aibo community, he works for free, he shares without expecting anything, and he has done his best to play within the rules. He deserves the support and the recognition of the hacker community for his efforts.

  13. The best questions are the obvious ones! on Gnome/KDE Tutorials For Windows Users? · · Score: 1

I must say this is an obvious question that I didn't think to ask. I just blindly accepted that if I wanted to wade into the waters of Linux then I could expect limited help and a lot of self propulsion. I come from a windows background from which intuition plays a large role, ie after a while you intuitively know what to do and where to go. Linux on the other hand relies on a lot of memorised knowledge. I suffer from a lack of time in my life (and my application to God for more hours in my day was politely rejected) so I have trouble retaining all the bits I need to remember one month to the next, especially if I have a long break between 'plays'. A good set of tutorials and cheat sheets would go a long way to helping this situation.
