I use the desktop metaphor all the time. I have piles of icons separated by function; Net, programming, utilities, games, etc. When I want to do something I go to the pile and find the specific program I need. Just because you don't use it does not mean no one does.
Nice sentiment right up until a soldier at a polling station points a gun at you and says "Vote Mugabe or die". Mugabe does not respect rights or the democratic process. He only respects power and in Zimbabwe, he has it all.
There will be no power vacuum. There already is a leader ready to take over; Morgan Tsvangirai who is currently Prime Minister but has no power. He would have won the run off had it been fair and without violence or intimidation.
It would not require a full fledged invasion to help Zimbabwe. All that would be required one SEAL tam to go in, apprehend Mugabe, present him to The Hague on charges of Crimes against Humanity and neighbouring African peacekeepers to protect the citizens in case the military or Mugabe's tribe gets out of hand.
The US is not the world police but who will help people under oppressive regimes? I thought that one of the tag lines for the US was "Bastion of Democracy". Zimbabwe was one step from democracy in the last election but Mugabe said no. He has ignored leaders from neighbouring countries calling for him to step down. He has ignored the power sharing agreement brokered by South Africa. He won't go if not forced. The people of Zimbabwe tried with votes but do not have the guns to do it; the US does. The US alone? No. The US with support and manpower from African nations? definitely.
There is a huge difference between Iraq and Zimbabwe. In Zimbabwe the opposition party has win most of the recent elections but Mugabe will not give up power. Unlike Iraq where there were a number of violently competing faction vying for power there is already a viable elected replacement government in Zimbabwe. Take a look at the Movement for Democratic Change party. There was supposed to be a run off in the last election but the MDC candidate withdrew citing the probability of his supporters being murdered. Mugabe, like many African dictators, is in his last days of power and trying to hold on at all costs.
It is not only "still possible the people he showed it to were arrested" it is a fact. As the article stated, all 45 people at the meeting was arrested and charged.
I wonder if that Act will come into play. There are a significant percentage of people who have disorders that make CFLs and LEDs unacceptable. There are skin conditions, migraines and a few other painful issues. I have a fixture that has an older CFL in it and when I turn it on my eyes hurt (I don't use it often and mainly to stave off tiredness). I think a case could be made that until a better technology comes by that incandescent bulbs are medically necessary for some people. It is not a case of "the colour is a bit different so I don't like it"; it is a case of CFL's and LEDs making some people physically ill.
A committee generally comes up with diverse ideas that do not fit well together hence taking a sleek animal like a horse and creating an ungainly beast like a camel.
How about using the money saved to do other things than create a cool colony that will not significantly impact life on earth. How about we use it to do other things like solve the energy crisis, solve the food problem, solve the growing water problem.
The comments for a Mars colony are very slim.
Life boat; Tiny population + radiation and other harsh conditions = inbreeding and mutation = non-human life if they survived at all. A tiny colony will not save the human race.
Minerals. Considering the billions of dollars it would take to get miners there and the material back, mining mars is not economically viable.
So there were 10000 unconnected calls; so what. When someone dials 911 and does not get through they try again until they do. For example, if someone tried to get through to 911 and it took 11 tries that would account for 10 unconnected calls. They still got through; it just took a little longer. What if the issue was 10000 people who had to try twice? A temperature emergency is a bit different than a fire. In most cases a five or ten minute delay in responding to weather emergency will not change the situation.
You missed the last part of that statement "per second". One of the biggest issues with laser warfare today is that they take time to burn through an object's outer shell and get at the vulnerable parts. It is difficult to keep a laser on the same spot on a moving object. If that time could be decreased dramatically, as in this laser, that problem would go away. A few millisecond burst, instead of a few second burst, will blow the missile out of the sky.
The Chinese have 187 Xian H-g's each capable of launching 6-7 anti ship missiles. 187*7 = 1309. So China does have the capability of launching 100+ antiship missiles at once. Add in missiles launched from ships, submarines and ballistic missiles and one can easily see have any defence can be overwhelmed. I am not saying it will be easy; just possible.
It is interesting that the article has no quote where Gaddafi makes this statement. I believe it is being made up by the press to encourage the use of Facebook. I think even Gaddafi knows that the best way to get someone to do something is to tell them they shouldn't.
It is a commonly known fact that the only way to ensure data is never retrieved from a physical disk whether spinning or SSD is to physically destroy the drive. All other methods short of that have flaws and some data can be retrieved.
Actually Mr. Kim's death had nothing to do with GPS. According to Mrs. Kim, they planned their route using a paper map and didn't see the note stating "Not all Roads Advisable, Check Weather Conditions." They also passed three prominent warning signs that state: "Bear Camp Rd. May Be Blocked By Snowdrifts."
I wonder of one of the other effects is that playing a fast game kicks in the fight part of the fight or flight reflex. In this state the body releases natural pain killing chemicals that increase one's ability to fight and not get distracted by pain.
Your original post stated they would have the fighter in a year. That is patently out of the question. May it take them less time? Possibly. Will it take them a year? Definitely not.
Ever heard of the 80/20 rule? In this case 80% of the material issue is well known. It is the last 20% that takes time and experimentation to get right. It is not just a materials question, it is how to use it in an airframe that can actually fly and fight while retaining as much stealth as possible. If it is so well understood, why, as the article stated, was china and Russia so eager to get pieced if the downed F-117?. Even when you gave a sample you still need to reverse engineer the processes to make it. That is not an easy task.
Lockheed was the controller in designing the F-22. It doesn't matter if it is a government or corporation is in control of a project the people working on it are still divided into teams working on different aspects of the project. They still have to communicate and work together.
What process, methodology or tools would China use to be able to repeat in a year what took a dedicated company like Lockheed ten years to do.
Here are some reasons your comparison is inaccurate.
1. The technology to build the track and trains was sold to China; they did not create it. 2. Building a factory to mass produce common components is easy once you know how to build the components.
3. Mythical man month. Adding people to a job may not decrease the amount of time to finish a job. In many cases it takes longer because people step on each others toes. For example, if it takes a team of 20 engineers and scientists 12 months to figure out the issues and fix the flight controls of the new bird do you really think it would take a month if you threw 240 engineers at it? A day if 7200 people worked on it? People are not parallel processing CPUs that plug together to make one faster mind. Thinking takes time. Testing takes time. Then there is the fact they can not test the flight controls until the airframe is built which can't be done until the engine is built. There are phases in every process that can not be done concurrently. That is called the critical path. You can minimize the time in each phase but each phase will take time.
You may have missed the helicopter/aircraft point. They can fly over the property and it is perfectly legal to look down. The fact that the pilot of a drone is not in the aircraft does not make it illegal.
I did not say anything about someone targeting your vehicle with the intent of stealing your gun. I was trying to say that leaving a gun in an insecure location is asking for more guns in the hands of criminals. A lock box in a vehicle is not secure as the vehicle may be stolen. A gun safe at home or when the gun is on your person is an acceptable level of security.
Flying a drone over your house to take photos is no different from using an infrared camera and sensitive microphone from the street... say, to watch your daughter in the shower.
There is a huge difference. To see into someone's back yard one only needs to be higher. They could be in an aircraft, on a cherry picker, in a tall building, or on a hill. When they look down hey can see into people's yards without electronic enhancement. The Supreme Court has already ruled that there is no expectation of privacy for anything that can be seen by eye from above. Infrared cameras and sensitive mics have been ruled as in intrusion to privacy and they require advanced technology and therefore need a search warrant to be used.
There is a huge difference between seeing over a wall and through a wall.
In fact, the right to safely stow a weapon (hidden and under lock and key) in your own vehicle, when at work, even with a concealed license, was just recently struck down.
The problem with a gun locked in a vehicle is that it is no longer under your control. If the vehicle get stolen the gun gets stolen too. They will find it and a few minutes with a torch will get the gun. Now you have a car thief with a gun. Can you say carjack? The difference between a lock box in a vehicle and a home is that homes don't get stolen very often and home gun safes are much stronger than vehicle gun safes..
By the way, the right is to bear arms not leave guns unattended in vehicles.
There is a huge difference between thousands of CCTV cameras mounted on polls and remotely piloted drones with cameras.
The CCTVs in Britain are not continually monitored. Some of them are watched some of the time but most of them just record video. There are not enough police to watch every CCTV continually and react in real time. They are used after the fact to gather evidence of what happened. It has been proven that CCTV does not stop crime it just helps catch criminals.
A drone is piloted by an operator who is watching what is happening. They are used much like helicopters are used today but for much lower capitol and operating costs. Anything that the operator sees can be handled in real time and not after the fact.

I am surprised that no one else has posted one of the oldest truisms in history:
A camel is a horse designed by committee.
How about using the money saved to do other things than create a cool colony that will not significantly impact life on earth. How about we use it to do other things like solve the energy crisis, solve the food problem, solve the growing water problem.

Return to base, rearm, refuel and sortie against the next carrier. Repeat until all carriers sunk.

It also appears we both may be wrong. Check the Texas Department of Public Safety Concealed Handgun Licensing FAQ http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/administration/crime_records/chl/chlfaqs.htm .
If I drive to a shopping mall that does not permit handguns, will I be allowed to park in the parking lot and leave my gun in the car?
Yes. Handguns may be left in cars in parking lots that do not have signs described above posted.
So it looks like you can leave the gun in the car.
