  1. Space considerations on Sony's PSX A Hit In Japan, PS2 Launches In China · · Score: 2, Insightful

I was wondering if someone would beat me to this post. People who haven't lived in Japan just don't seem to grasp just how much space is at a premium. Flatscreen monitors and wallhanging plasma tv's sell in droves not just because they're "cool" but because they allow people to reclaim space.

I think too many people base their ideas of Japanese life on anime. Most of the apartments and houses in those shows are unrealistic. Think "Friends" where a bunch of people with mediocre jobs somehow manage to have apartments in NYC that would cost ridiculous amounts of money in the real world.

One day someone in the echo mentioned that he had been looking for a particular book that was OOP and couldn't find it at any of the local used bookstores. Somebody elsewhere in the country said "Hey, I saw that book the other day at a local used bookstore. I could pick it up for you, just reimburse me." You could just see the collective light go on over everyone's head and suddenly the Fidonet Used Book Squad (FUBS) was born. What you need to understand is that the media like to portray things in black and white so that "consumers" can understand it. Bacon Bad! makes a beetter headline than "Scientists have shown that bacon in excessive quantities can be bad" And of course bacon in small or moderate quantities can have good effec ts. So the media switches to "BACON GOOD!" when they really should be saying " Scientists have shown that small quantities of bacon in a diet are beneficial, while large quantities are still bad for you" Bacon good is just easier fof the media to say.

Oh, I'm aware of that. I was just having a little fun, being sarcastic and stretching the truth. I'm as likely to go on the roof with my rifle as the media is to report the complete truth.

Possibly. I've seen it written both ways many times. Romaji (Romajii is also a common spelling) can be a bit problematic. That and my Japanese skills are truly awful. ^_^

Q: Bryan, how much Japanese did you learn? You lived there 4 years.

A: Not as much as you'd think.

    Q: Why not?

A: Because just about every Japanese person I knew wanted to practice their English skills on a native speaker, and their bad English was usually much much better than my atrocious attempts at Nihongo. Being lazy was quite easy. And I was a high school student so being lazy was in my nature. :)
