Most folks don't want or need to do this, but for those who have a want/need to do so, I'm sure that such a site would be a handy resource.:^)
Maybe bands could just not sign with major labels, and do other things to support their music "habit.", make money and still give music away free on the 'Net.
Here's an example: a band could do a semi-local "tour" of, say, bars (alternative: do a tour of college towns, which still implies bars), and keep day jobs. The band could use the shows as a means of selling hardcopy copies of their music, such as on CDs and cassettes. The bands would do well to keep part-time "day jobs" as well.
Oh wait...that's what a lot of unsigned bands do, short of giving MP3s away. *sighs* And here I thought I came up with a kick-ass idea.
Like the site's statistics show ('course, I believe that the worlds a bunch of lies, damn lies, and statistics;^) CD sales are ridiculously up.
Besides, the MP3 crowd is an easy target. These are folks who openly trade music, as opposed to the tape trading crowd of years past (and if it weren't for tape traders, Metallica would probably still be some luser band in SanFran.:^P ) There are probably a lot LESS people that trade tracks via Napster than there are via TDK. The big difference, of course, is the fact that whenever DAT machines were poised to be released in this country, the RIAA pushed for laws that made it illegal to record for consumers to record on anything other than cassettes or other "legal" media. Computers aren't legal for recording. PLUS, the RIAA pushed for taxes on audiocassettes (because, after all, all tapes were used for was pirating music, right? never mind that I have more original music on cassettes, and all the rest of my cassettes are legal copies for my car...)
Quite frankly, Lars & Gang are probably hurting as much as "Mr. Moneybags" Paul McCartney (talk about inane songs...who's worse, gang? I'll take "Battery" over "Uncle Albert" any day.:^)

You're right, of course. Unfortunately, the answer will probably be the dirtiest word known to an artist:
Marketing.
I remember some TV news "magazine" doing a documentary on marketing in the music business--"whoring" a song, if you will. Okay, this will show that this was a long time ago, so here goes: the band in question was Jesus Jones (remember "Right Here, Right Now"?) Essentially, the band was picking up a little of a cult following, got picked up by a label, and wanted a hit, I suppose. So, what happened? The label's people started cutting deals with stations to get the track "Right Here, Right Now" put into heavy rotation.
What's that tell ya? To get recognition, you have to go through sources that can shove your music down people's throats. Sadly, even PE was that way: if "Fight The Power" hadn't been bashed into my head my numerous media (mostly because Spike Lee, film god, made the video) I probably wouldn't have known Public Enemy from Al Capone (nor the difference.)
Oh yeah, and to all you folks who say PE sucks: listen to the rhythmic content of the tracks, and not just the sampled beats. The lyrical rhythm is something to make a white guy like me jealous.:^) Mah Gawd, the man's brilliant!
One more thing. Chuck D may go on about the plight of his people. I admire him for that. But it bothers me that so many members of the African-American community continue to make race an issue after we've attempted to make children (my generation was one of the first, with limited success) fairly "race"-blind. Case in point: the NAACP is bringing up charges of racism in the local police force. Are the police unduly harassing black community members? Hopefully, no; AFAIK the police "harrass" problem folks regardless of race, sex, or creed.:^) No, there simply aren't any black police officers. Not, "there aren't any non-white police officers," not, "there aren't any minority police officers," just "there aren't any black police officers." Well, it's nice to see my local NAACP is full of a bunch of bigots.:^P

The fact is, because it's a closed-source OS, they don't have that incredible user-support base that Linux/BSD has.

Essentially, the band was picking up a little of a cult following, got picked up by a label, and wanted a hit, I suppose.
The lyrical rhythm is something to make a white guy like me jealous.
Hopefully, no; AFAIK the police "harrass" problem folks regardless of race, sex, or creed.
Heh,
Says "Bill Gates is Michael Jordan"...
...but likes the pirates.
Bill hates pirates.
Bill hates you, D.
Hey, come on...
:^P) then lobby Be and ATI in a *nice* way, certainly nicer than your post here. Hard-working folks really don't like folks to simply whine about their problems; they do, however, like constructive criticism and hints.
:^P
Be isn't Microsoft. They don't have the clout of Microsoft to get hardware vendors to sign exclusive NDA agreements to keep the info for hardware secret...oh, wait, I've said too much...
Fact of the matter is, it's an OS originally developed for Apple, who, in thanks, backstabbed them and signed on Steve "I have a company of artists, not developers, and who gives a shit if Pixar makes me most my money" Jobs so they could shoehorn MacOS into OpenStep/Mach. The fact is, because it's a closed-source OS, they don't have that incredible user-support base that Linux/BSD has.
So, if you'd like the media OS to support your card (because, hey, if it doesn't support *your* stuff, the claims must not be true, huh?
If I didn't know any better, I'd almost be tempted to say you're a Microsoft troll.
