I spoke the Telecom people and they told me becouse they own all the lines in Germany that if someone want to offer flatrate they would have to pay telecom the fee for using that line. And don't forget that they are hurting for money now! Siemens is laying off 5,000 people (siemens runs T-DSL ATM backbone, not telekom) Thats why all the support numbers are toll.

Could you please send me the links of the ones you mentiond? address above.

What German Util company are you talking about. I would like to order it!

    Does it work without WEP?

Does it work with other brands of cards? (with my Cisco Aironet 340 I cannot set the speed manually, only works with auto)

Come to think of it, mine changes its management IP to a random one sometimes. And I do have the latest code running on it.

I talked with the reps from Linksys at CeBIT this year and they seemed nice. But another thing that annoys me with them is their PCI card. All of them have the same name, but 4 different chip sets and drivers for each. Also don't buy the Linksys PCMCIA wireless card, the range sucks. I got my Aironet 340 from wirelesscentral.net for $140

    Linksys??? Care to comment?

Who is going to pay for the distribution?

I use to work at a bakery and at the end of the day we would throw all the food away. Why? becouse donating it you expose yourself to lawsuits and it cost to much money.

If you wanted to organize a system like this you would need to:
    - Collect the old systems (Easy just have companys mail them to you)
    - You need to store them (get cheap land)
    - Need to ship them to destination (very expensive)
    - Distibure them to schools (also costly becouse of poor roads and rails)

One final issue (the reason we could not give away free food) is liability. What will your policy be on broken computers, How do you deal with that? You can't just say, "You got it for free, be happy!" Worse if the computer store school grades and the drive crashes...

I'm not saying this is a bad idea, It's a real good idea to donate them to developing countries (and install Linux!) But the cost is to high. I'm sure that there are non-profit organization that can do this.

If the electric companies want to get on the Internet, here is what they need to do, develop this device, mass produce it. Make channel 1 lets say the "public" access. Each of these repeaters would have a router and dhcp server. (run RADIUS with WAP so you can get your profit)
