IRC? It has three big problems. One, there's many different IRC networks. You can't really find someone unless you know what network they're on. Then you need to find a server adress. Blah, blah, and so on. Annoying. Two, Everybody can take up your nick on irc. Great fun, that. Three, IRC has a LOT of lag. No, IM has it's place and IRC will not replace it. The core of the problem is MS. I find it highly cynical for them to cry for open standards.
Whiners.
Bill Gates should be arrested, his property seized; the former dumped into the pacific ocean and the later used to end hunger in the world.
I don't know - if you give them too much RAM and too much MHz, then their software will just get bloated. I'd rather continue to see slim, efficent apps like we have now.
Because C't is hip and cool and really the best magazine around? I dunno. Ask them. And while you're at it, ask them to provide their newsticker in English, too. If enough people inquire, they might do it. As for the babelfish link - Yes it would be convenient. I'll try to remember it next time, but I won't promise.
Well, whatever they do, they better NEVER go the road of WinCE - where you have to support several types of processors. That's a huge problem because one of Palm's selling point is the huge amount of software available for it.
The resolution is fine, it's the contrast that's the problem. Compare a Palm III with a Palm IIIx and an Avigo, if you can find any of the later. The darker, less cotnrast screen of the Avigo s-u-c-k-e-d. The ultimate for me would be black on white. On the other hand, colors can even be a disadvantage, just ask anybody with a red-green weakness.
I think I want color. I have bad eyes, I need displays that are as clear as possible. The IIIx/V/IIIe display is good. COlor would be better. As for the IIIe - I think it's not really to make money - but to generate marketshare by providing an updated "entry" model. It's much easier to keep marketshare than to take marketshare from someone else.
I think IIIx is the way to go. Forget everything Non-PalmOS. I got my IIIx two days ago and love it. The streaking is annoying but the only app that the patch doesn't work for is Dragonbane. I'll now wait for the first decent color palm, and once it is cheap enough and there's some apps that support it, I'll upgrade. As for the IIIe - I think they'd much rather sell the IIIx and remaining III units here in Europe instead. Maybe something to do with the overhead of introducing a new product - by the time they have it in the stores, everybody would be waiting for the color palm anyway? Just an idea;-)
When was the last time your Playstation crashed versus your Windows95 "game" PC? Plus you don't have to worry about drivers or even such things as 3D cards. If it's made for console A, it'll also RUN on console A.
Technology isn't that far. Let the manufacturers of the hardware create less power consuming screens, and the makers of batteries build better, well, batterie,s and there you go Maybe in 2001.
Sigh... I have a Nokia 6150.... And it's not IrDA compliant. I'll really have to complain to Nokia for being such proprietary and shortsighted fools:-(
There is no IV model since the IIx is probably considered the "4". There's no PalmII either, afterall - that was the Palmpilot Professional... or something. Weird, but I think that's the way they do it.
Actually, I'd bet that a Palm Vx is next. A Palm V with 4MB of Ram. And then *I* am gonna scream for just making the form-factor tradeoff for more RAM...:-)
Yes but the guy's a student at a college. He will not have an "entire company directory" on his Palm. Look at the original post... I think if he's on any kind of budget, a PalmIIIe is the way to go. Of course the added ram of the IIIx is nice. That's why I am getting one.. on thursday. I can't wait.:-)
Here's what I recommend: Download all the software you want from say pdacentral.com, and load it into the Palm Simulator. If you stay well below 2MB, get a PalmIIIe. If you get anywhere close or even over the 2MB, get a IIIx. Don't bother with the PalmIII - the display is too bad compared to the newer Palms.
I tend to agree. I have checked out PalmIII, PalmV and PalmIIIx at a store, and compared them. I immediately gave back the PalmIII. The screen of the new Palms is SO much better. I've always had problems with these bw lcd displays. I have a TI Avigo, which served me well - although there's not much software for it, and it doesn't have handwriting recognition of any form, it's tons cheaper (got it for $100) and it has a higher res screen (160x240 pixel). I've just ordered a PalmIIIx yesterday - For the software, and for the lcd screen. Bottom line: The new LCD screen is definitely worth the cost of the IIIe over the III.

Color display? Eats plenty of power. That's the main problem. I think they should instead increase screen size and resolution a bit. Yes I'd like to see a color palm too. But the other points you raised - Entertainment apps? Palm definitely has more than CE last time I checked.
I don't think Color Palms are too far down the road - the Palm people are not stupid... But I'd rather see them do it right, than have the hardware chaos that the WinCE machines have.;-)
SuSE has also worked a lot on X development, including work on xservers and on SaX, which is a pretty nice setup program for X. They're also sponsoring the DOS-Emu project if I am not mistaken. Of course "SuSE Linux Labs" is both a publicity stunt as well as a "let's-catch-up-to-RedHat" stunt. But who cares? It can only help us.
Hmmm... Maybe that's why Calderra has been so quiet lately - all their programmers, looking through the source of Win95 for evidence for their lawsuit have died laughing.
Well I don't want to rain on your parade but seti@home stats are WAY OFF. For example, for a while, my completed resutls figure would rise for no reason. Now currently, I have sent at least 3-4 results which have not been counted. Also note that Team stats are not being updated. Setiathome has some serious problems these days. I wonder how hard it can be to keep a simple stats database going?

People aren't... or has Palm actually lost marketshare recently?

Because the leading computer magazine of the planet, C'T, is published in German.

I would say that entirely depends on what country you're in. Man, why do I even bother to reply to this? ;-)
Hmmm... Maybe that's why Calderra has been so

The windows client also takes about 7 times as long on the same (and I mean the exact identical, same, unique) hardware.

Can't say. bmwi is down. Slashdot effect anyone?
They did state in the later points they would seek international cooperation.....
