Having billions of tonnes of gold/silver/whatever raw material isn't going to solve any of earths problems. In the short term it will make America (or whatever country brings it back) very rich, but then gold will be devalued to such a stage that the global economy will be in a similar state to pre-Nazi Germany. Then the standard will have to be changed so that the econ is based on something thats still rare on earth and we'll be right back where we started.

  5. Re:NASA on USNA "Budget" Satellite Launched and Functioning · · Score: 3, Insightful

Why? Because these guys were amateurs/academics who only stood to lose their pride if the entire thing screwed up. When NASA sends a sattelite up, there are usually several million dollars worth of of R&D/net equipment costs associated with it that just can't be wasted. In short, while its cool that the midshipmen managed to do this, the chances of the entire thing blowing up in their faces (figuratively) are far too high for NASA to be able to use "radio shack" materials, or as they have often been accused, to 'cut corners' like this group were able to.

  25. This is not an "American style" war. on Afghanistan Is Like Nothing You've Ever Seen · · Score: 1

Before I start, I'll quote something I'm sure lots of you have seen before, its Colin Powell to then President Clinton, considering the invasion of Bosnia; "We do deserts, we don't do mountains". America's armed forces are good at tabletop warfare, where the enemy is easy to see, has clear assets that can be targeted, and thus can be defeated. Fighting the Afghan terrorists is /nothing/ like this - its a lot more like Viet'nam, where you have an elusive enemy who you cant properly target because he when you try to, he just drops back into the terrain and you've lost him. Their tactics are the same as used by the IRA in Ireland and the VC; strike hard and fast, then withdraw before and disappear before the counterstrike. This is /not/ a war that can be won "American style". If you want to achieve victory in this, you'll have to do it on *their* terms. That means small, special forces units, hitting hard and hitting fast, removing the targets one war or another, and getting out. You have to learn from the Soviets and British - even if their objectives were territorial acquisition rather than revenge; a broad campaign doesnt stand a chance, but a series of well-planned raids does.
