Doing what you love is a great way to make money. To have someone else take what you created and loved working on and change it, mess it up and destroy what was the best part of it really hurts the love of creating. It's not legal as law has nothing to do with it. The mall is completely within their rights to ban photography but they have no legal rights to do anything to you if you violate their policy. It's their policy, not yours. You can stand there taking hundreds of photos and they can't take your camera, they can't make you delete the pictures, they can't arrest you or tackle you. They have only one recourse and that is to ask you to leave. If you don't leave they can call the police and they can arrest you for trespassing but that is it. They can ban you from returning and have the police arrest and charge you with trespassing again if you do but that is it.

Time spent learning about computer components and even basic trouble shooting to prevent being ripped off a few hundred dollars, is time that could be spent selling your product or service to new clients or customers to make thousands in profit.

If you need some wiring done in your house, do you buy a book on basic wiring so you can check what the electrician did? If you need a plumber, do you learn basic plumbing code to is if your plumber is being lazy or trying to cheat you? If your car breaks down, do you spend hours in internet forums trying to get the internet to diagnose your problem before you take it to a mechanic?

At some point you just need to trust people to do their job, other wise you need to do everything your self and that is just not piratical. Find people you can trust to do good work for you but sometimes that trust is misplaces. All this article does is show a few warning signs to look out for before you do trust someone.

Your still thinking the old way. With digital distribution you can easily have cross label agreements. Say apple owned a 1/3 and Google owned 1/3. Google can agree to allow Apple to sell any albums Google owns digitally any way they see fit in exchange for the reverse. Similar agreements can be made with the final third even if it was broken up by a dozen different companies. Basically it would be the same agreement that ISP's have with each other that allows data to use the others network in exchange for the reverse.

  16. Re:The web is public domain? on Cook's Magazine Claims Web Is Public Domain · · Score: 1

The reason for copyright is to encourage people to create knowing that if they invest a large amount of time and money into a project and create something very good, that for a certain amount of time they can sell and profit from their creation to recoup their investment without others just taking their creation and profiting from them as well.

The idea is to reward the successful risk takers, so lets say we have a music company "A" that has signed a bang they think is good enough to be successful. They spend money on the band, studio time, editors and manufacturing a cd that they put in stores. Consumers decide the fate of that investment by choosing to or not to purchase a copy. They also choose the value of that copy. If someone thinks that the cd is only worth $10 and it is being sold for $20, then they will not buy it. When someone downloads an illegal copy, they have decided that the value is $0. When you argue about lost sales, it is all theory about the effects. Would they have bought a legitimate copy if no free one was available or would they not have. Does free sharing present the music to a larger audience and create more sales or not. I believe for the most part that both positive and negative effects of illegal file sharing have a positive gain, if not at least cancel each other out, but that can be debated elsewhere.

Now lets take a second `music company' called "B" that does not invest in any band or anything else. All they do is manufacture popular music and they choose their music by going into other music stores and buying a copy of that weeks number 1 seller. They make several copies and put them in many other stores. Profits are assured because everyone wants to buy a copy and they can undercut the other manufacture because there is no investment to recoup. There is very little theory in this case as every sale shows that the customer is willing to make a purchase. If company B makes a million dollars, that is a million dollars company A should have made. This is exactly what Cook's Magazine has done and why people are upset.

If people are just saving and sharing copies of this recipe, Monica Gaudio would be happy that people are enjoying her work and the exposure she gets from the sharing. Cook's Magazine took a copy, claimed it was theirs and put it in a book that they sold to make money with very little investment. If you did this in school, you get expelled.

This is why one is "okay" and the other is not.

If you have a lot of items, the cashier will be faster than you for several reasons. The main reason is the the self checkouts only let you scan one item at a time. You scan an item, put it on the scale, get next item, scan it, put it on the scale. A cashier can pick up one item and scan the same item several times if you are buying more then one. Say your stocking up on bottles of pop. Cashier will just pick up one and (beep)(beep)(beep)(beep)(beep), done.

If you have several dozen items a cashier will be much faster as they have you loading a conveyor belt that constantly feeds them items to scan. 2 people will always be better faster than one unless it's their first day.

Entertainment business fluctuates dramatically from day to day, week to week or season to season. If that means letting people in for free on off hours then so be it. You can off set your cost by selling food n drinks, swim caps and renting towels. Even if your loosing some money you get good will and better business during peak hours so over all you make money.

Same goes for the music industry. If they focus less on cd sales and more on concerts, posters, signings and other tangible items, they would make more money and have a hell of a better image then they do now.
