One of the first things that come to mind is cost. How much does it cost to run these types of adds. Is it really cost effective to manufacture batteries, displays, speakers and memory for video to be viewed maybe once if at all just to be tossed out? Now if displays are really that cheap, we should also be seeing an effect of lower costs on all displays. Also where can I get a few dozen copies as I'd love to start hacking those displays and putting together some sort of awesome free display.

Everyone seems to be bitching about using ( ) is not standard or could be confusing but again most posters have missed the point entirely. The test was to determine if people had an understanding of basic mathematical concepts, not who scored higher in a test. Of course the typical American response when ever they are shown their faults or failings is to attack the test it self. I don't think the test is the problem when nearly NO ONE in Asia had a problem. Go ahead, spend the next decade discrediting the results, altering the conditions and skewing the results and continue to ignore the fact that you don't understand how to do math and will continue to not teach your kids how to do math.

The point is that it is easier to learn the concept that there is a blank space and we need to fill it in when first learning math. When you see 7 + ( ) = 10 we know that something is missing so you figure it out. Learning that the blank space can be anywhere in the equation is a big step. To lean at the same time that letters can represent numbers adds to much complexity when your still trying to grasp numbers bigger than 10.

The only thing that surprises me is that there are people who think that 99.7% to 98% of torrents that are illegal. We all know that vast majority of people that use torrents know that it is far less.

This is exactly why we need an accurate study. No one here is claiming that 100% of torrent files are legal and no one would believe that either. The question is why when they say nearly 100% of torrents are illegal are you so ready to believe such a ridiculous claim?

With any type of study you need to question everything from the source data to to terms defined. When they count a torrent of lets say a tv series, do they count it once for the torrent or once for every tv episode in the torrent file? How about a music album? Once for the album or for each song in the album? Are they counting once for a torrent of a movie or 30 times for each rar file in the torrent? How much data (bandwidth) does each category represent?

Numbers can be skewed in so many ways. Take the fake study for example. They falsely showed that .3% were legal files. The average moron then assumes that 99.7% are there for illegal which is incorrect. I believe that about 10% or so (I can't remember exactly and don't care how off the number is as it all comes from fake data) were unconfirmed legal. Probably legal but no official source to say that they were. So already we are way off the mark of 99.7%

  8. Re:Funny how low it is. on Study Finds 0.3% of BitTorrent Files Definitely Legal · · Score: 1

No. Accurate measurable numbers are needed. With inaccurate numbers such as these, lobby groups can convince government to regulate, hinder or even ban torrent usage harming legitimate usage. They can also convince the uninformed public that downloading anything is a crime and morally wrong. Also what happens if/when the numbers flip where legal usage is in the majority but people still think it's wrong. There are still many terms that are feared and can make stuff look bad when it is not. Terms like radiation make things look dangerous where in fact all electronics emit some form of radiation.

    Apples, Oranges and Bananas.

When Valve released TF2, for all intent and purposes, it is a finished game. The complete experience is there and you get your monies worth, amusing you enjoyed the game. The fact that they patch errors and give additional content later by no means makes the previous version unfinished. If you do think that way then the game is never finished and by definition only finished when they decide to stop working on it at all. That style of game can always have something added to it, a new map or new weapon, it's almost unlimited.

Wow is different all together. You pay every month to play this game and if errors weren't patched and some new content wasn't added every so often, then payments would stop pretty quickly. The business model relies on it.

What were talking about is playing Super Mario Bros. and clearing castle 4-4 and getting, "Thank you Mario, but the princess is in another castle. To continue please enter your credit card number." or playing 1 period in a hockey game and being asked to pay to play another period.

In the end this has nothing to do with pirates and lost sales but everything with extracting more money from consumers and getting more from used game sales. Even if you buy your copy used, they want you to still buy the other half of the game from them so they can sell the first half of the game on CD once, then sell the second half 1 to 4 times depending on how much the game is loaned, sold or traded.

No, the first problem of many is that any ONE operating system was chosen at all. If the school wants to be high tech, that is fine but to focus on only one OS is very limiting, especially when most of these kids move on to college or work and find no one uses a Mac and they will have no experience with windows. The fact that they have chosen Mac computer tells you that what ever software they want to use for their courses can't be that specialized so it's very likely that a Windows alternative exists. There should be no reason that kids with PC can't use them in lieu of Macs.

The main problem regardless of the OS is money and the school wants to be high tech but is pushing the cost on to the parents. The fact that the school it self is selling the computer instantly warns me that the school will likely preinstall all the software required and more for it's own use. Will the school be scanning your computer that you bought full out every day? If I put some personal pictures on one of these macs, will I find the teachers reviewing these pictures looking for smoking or drinking or anything else they fancy? Will they be scanning any chat logs or web history. Basically does the school want to sell you a computer and still keep their hands on it?

Sure they have one and do use it occasionally, but most people will tell you that turning on the computer at home is the last thing they want to do after scaring at a screen all day.

Most people only know how to use a computer because they need to to do their job. The only software they know is what they use at work and at work people are only trained in what they need to know to do their jobs. Lets face it, for most people the OS is only there to run a data input application. The only thing windows is used for is to have a handful of links on the desktop for each needed application.

If your job falls outside of this need then maybe you do have a valid reason to be running Windows 7 but that is not most people.

The dealer isn't part of the game. It's the dealers job to run the game. The game it self determines winners and losers. If I'm playing blackjack and I have 25 and the dealer says winner, that is his mistake and I'm not entitled to any winnings. If I hit a blackjack and the dealer says looser, I am entitled to my winnings. If the dealer is not shuffling correctly and I'm winning, that's the casinos problem to fix but that doesn't change my past winnings or losses. If I don't like the way the dealer is shuffling, it's up to me to walk away from the table.

As for the slot machine, if the wheels all came up jackpot, they should get the money, regardless of any errors the machine may have had. If the wheels came up anything else but said jackpot anyway, then no they shouldn't win. It's as simple as that. If casinos want their games run by computers, they need to accept any errors they make. No different when an employee fucks up.
