I wonder how many good job offers MS has floated by Linus?
Probably none actually. Reason is being they have a great fear of the GPL. If in the event any of their code has any GPL code, they would have to GPL the whole thing. In this day and age, Linus is pretty much married to the GPL. So it would be unpossible for MSFT to even contemplate hiring him.
Shake is also costs twice as much for linux. Enough that it's cheaper to get a powermac and shake than to get a linux box and shake.. that's intentional.
It should be noted that Weta Digital opted for the more expensive Shake+Linux combination than going the full Mac route, heh
No it won't. Maybe at companies owned by Steve Jobs, like Pixar, but AMD64 has won the war. Even intel surrendured.
Nice troll. Quickly modded up of course because it's pro-Apple.
Wow this is ironic, you should see some of my previous posts, you'll see I'm anything but apple friendly.
I think you are confused as well. IBM created the PPC64 hardware, not Apple. (Additionally IBM did so even before Apple needed to use PPC64.) Therefore, PPC64 != Apple. I root for PPC64 for many reasons, but mainly because it is an alternative to AMD64/Intel64, and because it is an impressive hardware platform.
One day PPC64 will be just as common as AMD64 in the server room...

But I switched because upgrading IS HELL ON LINUX. It really is simpler on FreeBSD. All the ports are tested. Perfect? No, but hell and I mean hell of alot better then RPM.
Upgrading isn't hell. All I have to do is "urpmi.update -a ; urpmi --update --auto-select", and I've upgraded software or the entire distro. Do not fault the "linux upgrading system" for the sheer stupidy Redhat used to employ. Also RPM is rather powerful, but once again thanks to the stupidity of redhat, RPM has been marred for life. No matter how cool other people (mandrake, yellow dog, etc) do with it there are lots of ignorant people who will hate it automatically, even if they haven't tried the newer set of tools.
the profile system under Unix is meant for a centralized mainframe/server and dumb terminals for each user. All the apps are on 1 system so all you need under/home are the setting files for programs. Windows/Novell profiles on the other hand are the opposite. Only policies are uploaded while apps are local to the client. I am hoping Novell will change this after they buy SuSE.
You give no clear reason why you desire this massive un-UNIX like change. Also thanks to nss_ldap, much of the above can be done in one manner or another. (however, nss_ldap requires running nscd unless you want massive lagage, but that in turn causes sync'ing issues. One day all fo this will be fix0red. Only linux and Solaris support nsswitch(), none of the BSD's support it in a correct manner, therefore this is not possible with them.)
Why the hell do.so's or newer versions of glibc are incompatible with the old versions?
Because the binaries are linked that way. (read my other comments to see how all this works out.)
I can run an ancient Windows95 or Windows3.11 app without a problem under Windows2000.
Thats because retarded Windows applications like to over-write critical libraries with their own versions. Hence why Windows has a "roll-back" feature, and why LongHorn's WinFS allows for invisible versions of the same file. Its to allow for sheer windows programming stupidity.
Why can't they just keep older libraries and make a seperate newer one?
No one ever said you can't install old libs, I do it all the time to play old dynamically linked binary only games on my linux machine.
If the developer wants to link to the new one they can but the old one should be linked at compile and execution automatically.
Thats gotta be the biggest "dum-ass" idea ever (and yes, I spelt dum instead of dumb.). Different libs have different features, calls, etc. Go read a CS book to see why the MSFT people are smoking real crack. (go read ESR's "art of unix programming" to see why they're on more than just crack)

This is for your New Yorkers who know what I'm talking about. (wifi service in the island of Manhattan free for all verizon dsl/dialup users)
What is to be careful of? Fake Verizon-WIFI APs. No joke. I was walking down 14th street next to Broadway, and suddenly I wanted to hop online to check what the weather would be for later that day.
I pop out my Zaurus, pop in my wifi card, and start sniffing for whatever wireless networks I can get to. I hit a Verizon-WIFI AP, which works for me being that my company is a customer of theirs. I pop in my Verizon Online password, and my password, hit enter, and I'm in.
Except for ONE problem. I typed in my username wrong! (Zaurus 5600 owners know how much of a bitch it is to type numbers with the damn Fn key.) But I still got in!!! I reconnected, typed in a bogus user/pass, and still had zero issues getting in.
At first I didn't realize what was going on (being that I was late for class, and rushing like crazy). But then it dawned on me, that this was a fake AP setup to steal real verizon user-names and passwords. Pretty slick if you ask me.
Yeah yeah, not too related to the topic at hand, but other verizon customers may want to know
Poor Mandrake, seems like every time they go gold on a release one of the major components gets a major upgrade:)
Not true:
First, Mandrake 10.0 was NOT the final release, it was the community release. The final release of Mandrake 10.0 (due soonish) will have all the fixes and whatever else is desired.
Secondly (don't quote me on this), but I believe many of Mandrake's KDE 3.2 packages have the various patches needed to make it a better desktop all around.
I'm not too sure why they selected Xandros or Lindows over Mandrake for such a review.
Unlike either of the two, Mandrake is composed of 100% FLOSS, is freely available, and it simply "kicks ass".
In fact, I'm some what insulted they chose lindows at all. Lindows is a rather craptacular distro, with super annoying marketing practises, and a high yearly fee for people to get additional software.
