  1. Re:Also used by 'hackers' on CNN Says Chat Rooms Are a Haven for Hackers · · Score: 2, Informative

I'd like to disagree to this, referring to RFC1459:

If there are multiple users on a server in the same
channel, the message text is sent only once to that server and then
sent to each client on the channel. This action is then repeated for
each client-server combination until the original message has fanned
out and reached each member of the channel.

Same with PRIVMSG's, they only travel through the servers on the route from the orgin to the destination. It would be truely bandwidth waste to send all messages to all servers.

  2. Some ideas for the client-side protocol on Optimizations for IRC Protocol? · · Score: 1

Well, a good thing would be the understanding of tokens (like P = PRIVMSG, N = NOTICE) by clients, that could save a lot of bandwidth on a lot of servers. Also a standard for tunneling IRC inside SSL could be welcome, many IRC servers support this nowadays. Compression isn't feasible client->server, so that would not be a good thing to be able to. It is generally on server-server that is mostly required.

Also, inclusion of the numeric 005 spefication in a RFC could be welcome (RPL_ISUPPORT) - as it makes clients able to know what is and what is not availiable on a server, and can take precautions to what kind of numerics it may recieve.

About UINs, my belief is that I need noone to be able to fake who I am, and UIN's will increase the stalking that usually happens by people. Doesn't UIN's take away the charm of IRC a bit? - we are not MSN/ICQ/(insertcrappychathere) last time I saw. Nickname problems: Why would we want 300 Gandalfs on same network? About vchans, I mean, Don't you like how #blah is managed? Make #blah+
    :P or find another playground.

Generally, IRCd coders should sit down and make up a common standard - not the IRCnet RFC's, but RFC's that basically covers how most IRCds work today.

But, they really need to watch out what to send me as ads, based on my music taste. I don't want spice girls commercials because my little sis downloaded one of their songs on my account?.

Also, you should be able to check what kind of ads will pop up, like a status page of their info. People should be able to see what the big .coms know about them, shouldn't they?

Also, can you combine "life"(whatver it is) and your "geek" life?. If not, my advice is that you should learn to have both a life, and be a geek at the same time - you'll end up alone else =P

  9. Shops selling Linux games on id On Linux: Bad News · · Score: 1

To be honest, here in Denmark, I have not seen a single shop selling Linux games. This may be because the demand is not so high so it's not feasable to sell?. Support being a pain (as they say), because of every changing version - what do they do when Windows 2003 come out etc? that's going to be a support nightmare too. The good thing about linux is the ever changing versions, and in a way, also a bad thing, as it may take long to upgrade entire networks

  23. Hmm.. WAP/Linux on Another Angle To WAP And Linux · · Score: 2

Just wondering - I think WAP is a great technology, but places like here in Denmark, its really expensive to use the cellphone, even for data transmissions. We know it won't be long until we see advertisments on WAP sites, which will just make you spend more time "online" at the cellphone. Shouldn't we fight for cheaper telephone rates instead of making more and more flash and candy which only will make the users spend more money. On WAP and Linux, if people need it, and WAP is an open standard (correct me here?) - If people or a coder needs it, they will eventually make it. If for instance Nokia goes and makes a WAP browser for *nix/BSD, as binary only, would ya all go and beg them to go open source? If yes, why don't you go make something alike?.
