  1. Home Theatre Component on Hardware Review: Rio Central · · Score: 1

Why don't they come up with something like this and add in a Tivo-type recording system? I know it can easily be done on a computer with a TV capture/out card, but it'd be nice to have it in one stereo component with nice audio outputs, optical output, Ethernet (allowing remote admin via web interface, access to the internal hard drive (so I can still access my mp3's from my computer), and the ability to mount a remote filesystem for playback (so the mp3s/video files on my computer could be easily viewed on the system without having to copy them over). Hmm... the ability to easily add future components (internal and external) would be nice as well (read: home automation). Please someone, make someone like this and sell it at a price I can afford! :)

There's a lot of issues that they'll need to wrap up in those last 5 episodes, so hopefully they'll be able to pull it off. I wish them the best of luck... they have a lot of people to try pleasing. :)
An another note... I pray to God that DD writes some Scully-in-the-shower or Scully-with-some-greased-up-lesbian-aliens into his episode. :)

  5. Video games? on Panasonic Dual-LCD PC · · Score: 2, Interesting

Unfortunately the server is already /.'d for me, so I don't know if my question would be answered in the press release.

One of the most interesting reasons for setting up dual displays for me would be for gaming... more FOV. With most systems, however, only one 3d card is used to display the game, while the other stays on the desktop. Would it be up to game designers to add a feature that would allow both screens to be used for displaying the game, or is that at the window manager level?

Furthermore, what would be the best way to handle this for FPS (and most non-FPS games actually) where the main action is in the center of the screen? Your crosshair would fall on the break between the LCDs. :/ Maybe use one display for FOV stuff and the other for displaying weapon, health, ammo, map, etc?

Any insight would be appreciated. :)

It'll be a story when somebody has copies of a letter explaining that their service was cut off, due to the use of NAT. In the meantime, I can tell you that the firewall on my comcast connection has received no new exploratory packets originating at comcast servers.

And while we're at it, we'll just sit idly while the government installs Carnivore-like systems at our ISP's. After all, it doesn't matter until they show up at your doorstep to arrest you, right?

  7. Re:Smaller isn't always better on Improving Computer Form Factors? · · Score: 1

It'd be cool if some company made a device/component in the computer that could be used for loss-prevention. Maybe a small wireless network device that simply sends a network broadcast every so often. Then you have your server listening for these broadcasts. If one isn't recieved when expected, your server could notify you: email you the time and location of the device, notify the guard's computer, or maybe even grab a picture from the building's security cameras and archive them for later viewing. Don't know if this would be possible, or cost effective, but it seems easy enough. :)

  8. Stackable components on Improving Computer Form Factors? · · Score: 3, Interesting

What about changing the way the AGP/PCI/ISA cards fit onto the motherboard? SBC's use cards that stack onto one side of the board. If this was done, you'd save about 4" of height. Just have the AGP stack on one side of the motherboard and the PIC cards stack on the other. Cooling would be a factor, but a single fan would push air more directly over the components, so I think it would work out ok. Laptop sized hard drives could become industry standard in time, and hopefully at some point floppy drives won't be used anymore (I dont have one in my system). Finally, CD/DVD drives could either be made smaller by making them slot-loading, or by using external drives (ala SCSI or USB). I guess that leaves the power supply, which I don't know much about, but it seems like there's a lot of wasted space in that little metal box. :) My computer, using a stacking concept, small footprint motherboard and an external CDR/DVD would probably be able to fit inside a 5"x5"x5" cube.

  10. TV Out on SonicBlue's Digital Audio Center · · Score: 2, Insightful

Why don't any of these things come with TV out standard? I'm building my own now for this reason. Sure, a big LCD screen is nice, and you don't have to worry about switching off the Packer game ;), but a TV screen would allow a very nice interface for a large collection. Maybe if this thing had TV out, the price wouldn't seem so outrageous.

This, when combined with the earlier news regarding the eroding of the polar ice caps, would more easily allow some type of terraforming on Mars to occur. Drop in a bunch of plants that don't suck up much water and let them convert the Co2 to Oxygen. Now I wonder if it would actually work? :/

    2. Mr. Potato Head- I got a Rubik's cube 2 years ago, a Slinky last year, and this year I want a Mr. Potato Head. Christmas just isn't fun without something that takes you back to your childhood.

    3. Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Ringworld, and Narnia (Lion-With-Wardrobe, etc) book sets- I'm trying to read more non-technical books. :)

One thing over $30 that I want... a T1. I don't think Santa will be that nice, though. :/

  13. If a component goes bad on Concept PC 2001 · · Score: 2, Insightful

I've seen systems before where the cd drive is built into the monitor (like this one). I'm curious what happens if the CD drive goes bad on you. Obviously, it would be a bit too expensive replacing the entire display, but the drive itself looks like it would have to be very slim to fit in there. Has anyone had experience with something like this, and if so, how hard is it to find a replacement drive? Just curious. :)

Other than that, this thing looks nifty. It would make a great in-car computer if it doesn't draw too much power.

  14. Similar Major.. Different School on What Do You Do When CS Isn't Fun Any More? · · Score: 1

I would recommend looking at nearby Universities for similar programs. Different schools may focus on different aspects of CS and therefore be more interesting to you. For example, I was attending college as an Applied Math major, which there was a mixture of heavy math (passed DiffEq sophomore year and still had over 30 math credits to go) and computer science. I started getting bored with the math portion, so I tranferred to a nearby college and went with a straight CS major. Most of my credits x-ferred too. Even finding a program that works in a different language (Java as opposed to C++) could help.

As files, or as actual video? DVD video is encoded as high quality MPEG, I believe, so divx wouldn't save space. It would just be converted to MPEG and be written to the DVD. The total onto a double sided disk would be around 4 hours.

As a file written to DVD-RAM, you can only do one layer on each side for a total of 5.2gb (http://www.cd-info.com/CDIC/Technology/DVD/dvd.ht ml).

On another note, Lincoln Logs were created much earlier than Legos and have also fallen out of the marketplace. What a shame. :/

  19. Art Colleges on Are Computer Graphics A Fine Art? · · Score: 1

Art schools like Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design & Minnesota College of Art and Design specifically separate computer art as a separate medium. Art is simply a visual expression of thoughts, emotions, or concepts, so really anything can be art. If it's received poorly, it's simply because people are stuck in tradition and don't like change. If you consider yourself an artist, do what feels right... no matter how it is received. You'll see that as more computer generated art appears in galleries and museums, art critics will accept it more. It's just a matter of time.
