Google state that Chrome OS cannot take the place of full OS (yet), it is for netbooks only. Perhaps you need to watch the launch video, it is quite interesting.
I would love to see the demise of people making Access databases, Word forms and Windows only applications.
My only concern would be media - I don't really want my games, mp3s, videos stored "in the cloud". Docs, emails are fine.
If you compile it yourself you can run the "live disk" and it isn't too hard to do if you have Ubuntu Karmic. I am running Chromium OS on my laptop right now, it is nice a snappy with a pretty fast boot time - around 9-10 seconds.
I am running it on my laptop and have no problems.
I am pretty sure half of the problems people have with Linux in general is hardware drivers which is understandable because more hardware is made for Windows. Until more hardware is supported in Linux I think we will continue to see wireless and video driver issues.
Features (that I could see in 1 hour of use) -
- A bit better then XP, a lot better than Vista
- New splash screen
- Start button lights up with lots of colours
- Can't change the start menu to XP style
Overall, please stop ramming Windows 7 down our throats, if it really is that good let it speak for itself.
My issue is not about stopping ddos or malware etc etc but whether ISPs should have take responsibility.
I didn't want to sound extreme and you have a good point, but if ISPs start "managing" end users they may become liable for things they do e.g IINet sued after they opted into the gov filtering pilot.
If an ISP offered this as a service willingly then fine but they should be careful.
Solaris doesn't have as many prepackaged open source apps compared to Ubuntu last time I checked.
It has a cool theme, runs Gnome, Openoffice, firefox and when you run tools like ifconfig/ping you will get a slightly different output/experience.
It was around 6 months ago, but I remember that the pictures didn't show up, contents needed to be recreated, tables were an issue. Also I tried writing a resume and the formatting wasn't what it looked like in OO compared to Word.
Yes, OO can save in *.doc format. If you have ever tried it with something like a 100 page file with tables, indexes and pictures you will know that it is a waste of time.
Word is the only option and thus the problem.
Because if OpenOffice was found to be infringing on this patent and Dell packaged OpenOffice instead your post would read "Maybe this is a wake up call for people relying on *.odt", right? And that your post would also have a question mark next time.
I was referring to a file format rather than Open Office. You do realise that there are other Word processors that can save odt files don't you?
If Windows works better for you, use it. Use whatever OS makes you happy.
If you want to run Linux on a PC designed for Windows, try a live disk first. If it doesn't work how you like it to, consider returning the laptop.
I have no problems with battery life on my Dell.
Make it short and simple, there is nothing worse than pc names like hdh02039024904.
Also, refrain from using names like enterprise, chewbacca, kryten as they make you look like a real nerd.
Cool lets go bleeding edge
have you got it working, doesn't work for me...
so they can play Final Fantasy duh

ISPs should just provide internet access not police and monitor traffic.

I think that main point I am trying to get across is that in general OO saving files in *.doc and *.docx format doesn't work as well as if Word was saving the file. Whether that is a bug in OO or another Word processor etc doesn't matter. Word is the only choice for saving doc files reliably and fair enough too, it is Microsoft's format. http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/FAQ/General/Is_OpenOffice.org_compatible_with_MS_Office_and_StarOffice_file_formats%3F

I want to be on what ever this guy is on. As an alternative, people could stop using Windows Bot.NET

Actually I am using ATI's new Catalyst Centre and driver for Ubuntu and it is really good.
When you can pay a private company 25% more than you can do it yourself and get 25% less service.
