Not so much because it's an idiotic logo and a completely vapid motto, but that there are people at the top of SGI who think that this is a good idea... Terrible.

A moment of silence for the old (incredibly cool) logo, and the old SGI.

And geez, I always thought SGI to have a little more class than to make an obnoxious noisy useless opening screen on their web site...

You're right, Linux gets to the individual computer users without ESR. ESR is for the coporations. You say just like OSS become tested and true... the point is in the vast majority of the times, businessmen don't consider Linux as a real possibility. This is what ESR is about.

ESR is all for open discussion, but take a look at this message board. A large number of the messages ARE personal attacks...

  9. Sheesh sometimes i wonder about mankind on ESR Wants to Retire · · Score: 2

I must agree wholeheartedly... it's amazing the extremes people can go to.

It's really kind of tragic to see how people in the Linux community, which is centered around one of man's greatest (imho) achievments of idealism, generousity and unselfishness, can often be so petty and quarrelsome (and nasty) - not just about this but many other issues as well.

  10. Driving people away on ESR Wants to Retire · · Score: 1

Geez... You don't have to love everyone in the Linux/Unix/Open Source community, but you don't need to be so savage either. For a community centered around good ideals like free software and open code, there's alot of infighting, and often very nasty. I know ESR is not the only talented coder who has been turned off by all the bickering, this sort of nastiness drives alot of people away.

  15. Misrepresentation of stories... on Students Sue over Difficult Class · · Score: 1

I hate it when the media misrepresensts stories with titles like this. Makes it sound like some students at any normal school took a course and failed and want to sue.

It's a slighty different case when it's not a normal class but a certification class that prolly cost over a thousand dollars (often more) and they were assured it would be easy.

Now, I'm not saying they should win the case (or they should have sued at all), I agree that the school did the right thing, offering to take the course again. But get the facts straight.

This reminds me of the article spread through the media about the UltraHLE source... First everyone printed incorrect facts ("The authors released the full source code!") then they 'got mad' that someone was trying to play a trick when it was pointed out the it wasn't the author, it wasn't the full source, and he never claimed he was one of the authors or it was full source.

This isn't new, btw - There has been mentions of the ticket polices on the Star Wars fan sites (like theforce.net) about it for a while now, at least 2-3 weeks ago.

  17. HP200LX on Gadgets of the Geek Elite · · Score: 1

To me, the coolest geek gadget is the old HP200LX Palmtop. It may not be as fast as newer ones, or have a color screen, but it does run DOS, letting your run TONS of software programs on it. It's also very easy to code for, there is a great collection of apps written for it, from CAD to web browsers. It's got great battery life (up to 30 hours, something WinCE battery hogs can't claim), comes with a PCMCIA slot for accessories as well as a serial port. Of course, it's got all your normal PIM utils in ROM as well as a stripped version of Quicken that you can use in conjunction with the full version. There are even 'after market' addons like a double speed crystal and RAM updates up to 64M. It's a real, real shame HP stopped making these and concentrated on WinCE like EVERYONE else (I wouldn't touch one of those if you paid me... my Mom has one and has sent it back for replacement 4 times).

It's just a file format, as long as people are intrested in archiving music and trading it online it'll happen, mp3 or otherwise. Hell, there were even people with phat pipes who copied songs on .wav back in the day...

This is what the releaser GrossiTheDog says:
I've decided to make my efforts of converting UltraHLE to C++ public. Note that this is NOT finished source code conversion or anything, this is just 5 minutes work of me playing around - many weeks of work are in store if this project is to be completed.
