    Clearly anyone eating a single meal ever at McDonalds is an unfit parent and gastronomical philistine.

    It's not even possible that they just wanted some quick, familiar food on their way home after a full day experiencing whatever you think qualifies as "real" Paris.

    If McDonalds counts as "familiar" then yeah you are a gastronomic philistine.

    Eyes are very sensitive whether you can see through them or not. Personally, I can't even manage putting eyedrops in my eyes. I'd rather sit with my eyes closed until they generate enough lubrication on their own than use eyedrops, and that can take 20 minutes or so if I'm really stoned.

    If I were totally blind, I'd probably opt for surgery. But it would have to be general anesthetic.

    For example few people would call my car's electrical system a computer even though it has ram, CPU and storage.

    But the few who do, would be correct.

    that's not the way Apple sells it, nor is it the intended use.

    Why should that matter? It is still a computer.

    No. If they can't get reelected based on an honest recounting of what they did in office, they should not be reelected. In the case that no one can get elected, the union itself should be abolished.

    Because it's more convenient to speak to the common case and let the listener modify the meaning for special cases himself. This is the same reason why I said "himself" in the previous sentence, instead of "him or her self". It's cumbersome and provides no additional information.

    FOI requests take time and have to be for something specific.

    Which is a serious problem. All official communications from any government office should be public, and available in real time. There should be no expectation of privacy, at any time, for any public official.

    If we want compromise, people need to be free to talk privately.

    And if we want accountability, politicians must never talk privately.

    You are aware that public shaming is a deterrant for some politicans to do the right thing. Can you understand that it is also a deterrent for politicans to do the wrong thing? Give them the power to keep secrets, and they will keep the wrong kinds of secrets. Sunlight, as always, is the best disinfectant.

    The "pick any two" canard is for when there are actual constraints making all three impossible. There's no reason beyond corruption that we can't have all three of those.

    It'd be more accurate to say that criminals commit crime because they have less to lose.

    Except the biggest criminals are the wealthiest. I did the math a while back, and the wealth lost in the 2008 financial crisis exceeds that of *all property crime put together by several orders of magnitude*.

    If you are concerned about crime, focus at the top. Politicians and CEOs do far more harm to this country than drug addicts and gang bangers.

    Taking care of peoples basic needs would stop a lot of bad behavior. Prostitution is negatively correlated with rape. Heroin maintenance programs reduce the damage caused by drug seeking addicts. A guaranteed basic income can dramatically reduce the problems associated with poverty.

    Too bad our society cares more about appearing "tough on crime" than effective solutions to our problems.

    Fair enough. In so far as companies exist in isolation, without any official recognition or facilitation by the public, they simply exist. Any official recognition or facilitiation however is rightly done only by the public to serve the public good.

    If you want to be evil in private, go ahead. Don't ask me to limit your liability. Don't ask me to offer you tax breaks. Don't ask me for any special treatment at all. That is reserved for the groups that are operating in the public interest.

    Or rather, it would be in a just society where the people had a say.

    American reflex to assume that 'assaulted' and 'mcdonalds' in the same sentence signals a wacky story about the violence of the degenerate classes, it appears that the French golden arches crowd is slightly different

    Someone who so readily assumes that a white collar worker is less "degenerate" than a blue collar worker is quite a degenerate himself. Suits are the colors worn by the most dangerous gang in the world.

    Companies exist to serve the public. The profit motive is only a guide.

    By what law or logic is this?

    Because the people are sovereign. Companies can only exist because the public wills it. If companies are to justly exist, they can only exist to serve the public. If a company exists that does not serve the public interest, either the people will remove it, or the people have been oppressed to the point where they can't.

    Guilty of peaceable assembly and repeated dissent. There's nothing wrong with unarresting the wrongfully arrested.

    Remember, the police aren't here to protect you. They're here to protect the ultra rich from you. Anything that tips the power balance away from the cops, also tips the balance away from the oligarchy. This is a good thing.

    I'm still using Office 2003 at work, and will for the forseeable future. Microsoft still provides a compatibility pack to read and write docx. What reason is there to upgrade?
