You wrote, "given our technological sophistication and determination to stay alive."
What makes you quite so sure we know what the hell we are doing? This is the same planet where 2 out of 3 Americans are overweight while small children in Africa starve to death because of greedy war mongers. Meanwhile we've got a President that totally backs the oil companies position on global warming.
I don't need to chill out. I need to get pissed off. I think you do, too.
Excuse me, are you a climatologist? Or are you just an armchair scientist?
All I'm saying is that mankind is raping the fuck out of the earth. That's pretty clear. Coral reefs are dying, there's massive deforstation, massive extinctions, and many, many climatologists clearly believe that mankind is certainly influencing our temperature in a negative way. The only question is basically by how much.
We can't continue to just believe in some fanciful free market consumerist that will magically make our problems vanish. There's absolutely no basis for believing that's a solution, except if you are heavy into the Bible and believe mankind is ordained by God to rule the world.
Don't worry, if we keep going the way we're going, we'll all be living in a cave soon enough. That's only if some crazed madman doesn't take advantage of the economic crisis that follows and blows us all to smithereens.
Oh, wait, that's when Jesus comes down and saves us, right?
Jesus, man. Don't you get it? The only bullshit is coming from the neoliberal, right-wing think tanks who the free market is the lord and savior of the mankind. They are in the business of manufacturing doubt so they don't have to worry about pesky governments and the rest of humanity get in the way of their profits.
First, that guy is a biochemist, not a climatologist. Second, he co-authored his paper with paid shills from the oil companies and right wing think tanks. They are in the business of manufacturing doubt so oil companies can go ahead an make their precious profits without having to trouble themselves with letting the rest of humanity get in the way.
But it may be a better idea to let it rise, which will allow more people to enjoy warmer temperatures and probably boost the tourism industry in many parts of the world that are now too cold to be year-round vacation destinations.
Ha! This is one of the greatest trolls of all time. Good one. The one about free market solving all of man's problems is pretty funny, too. I bet you'll get a lot of people to jump up and down about how crazy that is.
The last 100 years has been just one big huge orgy of mass consumption and it still continues, spreading to developing countries like China. But anyone who thinks we can just continue to rape the globe forever with no consquences is delusional.
Question is, are we going to be stupid enough to continue down this wreckless path? Does humanity secretly have an unfulfilled death wish? Was World War II just a fluke or was it a flash of the selfish inhumanity really lies within each of us?
Listen I'm willing to admit I'm part of the problem. I recognize things have to change. Each of needs to wake up, find a way to snap out of these unsustainable lifestyles we all lead and avoid the terrible consequences that surely await us if we don't.
Let's quit being fucking idiots. What do we need to do?
He's got a used $100 Dell lap top. He started by watching a monster truck streaming video over and over. He learned how to stop and start the video by clicking on the mouse.
He's now 2 1/2. With some effort, he can pretty much move the mouse to where he wants to go and has the idea of clicking down, though he often wants me to do it for him becuase it's easier. There's all sorts of great educational flash animations out there for him. After about 10 to 15 minutes, he gets bored and then moves onto some other activity. He plays with the computer only a couple of times a week, nothing heavy duty. Every once in a while I bring him up to my computer and let him watch me work on the computer, telling him in very basic terms what I'm doing.
Anyway, the kid's going to grow up thinking of the computer as an extension of himself. There's no question they're going to play ever increasing roles in our lives. His generation is bound to be a very different kind of generation.
You seem to not grasp the basic power struggle that has historically existed between capital and labor. Workers are always more powerless alone against management than when the work together.
All the work freedoms you enjoy today, vactation, overtime, paid holiday, sick time, etc. were the direct result of legislative and workplace victories won by organized labor, not by people who, as individuals, went out to find better jobs.
I downloaded it a few days ago. It's now free and even better than the version released last year under the name "Keyhole." It's much less clunkier than google maps. It now maps out driving directions that you can see and print, too. It's a great time killer as well.
I never assumed that NBC graphic depicted the earth rotating. I thought it was from the perspective of someone in a rocket circling the earth as he travels from West to East.
The interviewee heralds Microsoft's server reconfiguration with a few mouse clicks. First, that's a feature that could be coded into any Linux distribution fairly easily. Second, if it weren't for Linux, Microsoft would have never have any need to create such "innovation." They'd let their server software rot from decay just like they did with IE---until they started to feel the heat from Firefox.
The question underpinning the original post is "Who gets to decide what is in self defense and what isn't? A court of law? You?"
Why don't you define spam for me so we can clear this matter up? That'll be tough to do because one man's spam is another person's informative email or newsletter. If you start getting email you consider spam, does that allow you to start lobbing DDOS attacks at the person. And if you don't have the authority to decide, who should? This company? Why?
Vigilantism is not a good thing. It leads to chaos.
Have you ever received junk mail from an individual? No, except maybe from your local politician. The e-mail addresses would be issued to individuals, not corporations.
I was just talking about this with a president of a letter carrier's union. We were talking about the US Postal service giving e-mail addresses to every individual. You would have to spend 5 cents to send an e-mail to someone else. That's probably a high enough threshold to keep spam out.
The receiving in the e-mail benefits because he knows he will have an inbox that is spam free and has messages full of important messages. The sender benefits in that he knows his message is much more likely to be seen and read.
Nice sentiment of love there, brother. Peace be with you, too. You have restored my faith in mankind.

Why those rotten scientists! They conveniently left out this fact that "everybody knows" to trick us! Those devils!
So your position is to continue to rape the planet, full speed ahead? Sounds sensible. Let's do it.
Yeah, and I guess Martin Luter King decided it was man's lot to be racist assholes and decided to walk away from it all?
Sorry, dude, you can't shrug your shoulders. That's fatalistic. Fatalists never get a fucking thing done.

Since when is not kowtowing to somebody worthy of scorn? Is this a generational thing?
I'm stuck with my current crippled version of QuickBooks. Any open source equivalents out there that you'd recommend?
I leanred quite a bit from my brother's old college text books lying around. Imagine the missed opportunities if he had bought these eBooks.

You need to reread the original post:
"If it's okay in this instance, it it okay to DDOS the next guy who does something we don't like?"
This is NOT a slippery slope argument. His argument is more like this:
"If Person A can go around shooting people in the head, is it OK for me to do it?"
There's nothing slippery at all about this argument. It's an argument about who should have the authority to carry out certain actions.
This is not a slippery slope fallacy.
The question underpinning the original post is "Who gets to decide what is in self defense and what isn't? A court of law? You?"

No, you would just use the "free" non-usps e-mail service to mail to those groups.
Have you ever received junk mail from an individual? No, except maybe from your local politician. The e-mail addresses would be issued to individuals, not corporations.
Simple, you have to use your USPS e-mail address to send to another USPS e-mail address.
