  3. Certifications CAN BE MEANINGFUL on What's the Point of IT Certifications? · · Score: 1

I think certification can be meningful. It all dpends on the certifications. MCSE is worthless in my opinion because it consists of only written exams. You can just cram all the known questions and their answers and then pass the test.

Other certificaions like those from Cisco (CCNA for instance) or Red Hat (RHCE) are performance based. You actually have to work with systems on these exams instead of just answering theoretical questions.

The point of certifications thus becoms that you can show a MINIMUM of knowledge about a certain topic instead of expecting the one doing the hiring to just believe you when you say that you do know how to do things.

Now that may sound like insulting to some of the readers here, but hey HR departements have to deal with a lot of frauds in this field and so they need some kind of assurance.

If HP is so in love with the GPL why don't they GPL HP-UX? I know that they problably have licenced code from other companies but so have Sun and IBM. It's easy to criticize others than contribute yourself. Sun and IBM have their reasons for choosing a particular licence (software patents for instance).

What I really hate about many software companies is that they don't publish their prices on the site. If I want to know what it costs I have to talk to some sales person. This makes the process of evaluating software an unnecessary hassle. I want to know up front what software costs.

I am not talking about large infrastructure implementations and such. I can imagine that in these cases pricing is dependent on many factors which make it impossible to give a price quote up front.

I found merlin server from Abriasoft to be a good Apache+php+MySQl+Perl distro for windows with php as an apache module. You can find it at http://www.abriasoft.com (registration required if you want to download and the download is approximately 43 MB). The nice thing about this distro is that it comes with ssl (https protocol support), phpmyadmin (admin your mysql server within your browser) and phpcode (php IDE) and some other windows programs to make webdev easier. By the way I am not affiliated with Abriasoft in any way.

  11. Corporate conspiracy on Mozilla Junkbuster-like Feature Removed · · Score: 1

Why is everyone so pissed of because of Netscape allegedly influencing some features in their own product? Netscape gave away it's code with the intent of additions being made by others, but they never promised to incorporate ALL the features brouth in by others.

I think Netscape has every right to disable this feature, if they want to. If you do not like it, then use the Mozilla branded version or compile your own. This is after all the idea behind open source software. If poeple didn't have a choice besides Netscape this would be a different story, but luckily there is a choice thanks to the open source nature of the product.

  12. maintaining open source on SourceForge Fails To Forge Source? · · Score: 3

Do not look a gift horse in the mouth. This old saying is also applicable to open source code. When someone gives you something for free you either try to figure out how it works with the little help they provide or you pay big bucks to someone who will do it for you.

Personnaly I prefer the first choice because it prevents me from becoming a trained monkey who can do something whithout knowing what I am doing. Having someone else do ALL the hard work for you will result in creating uneducated users who know little or nothing about the software they use and the dangers associated with doing so. If that is what you want try commercial software. Albert Einstein once said: "Make things as simple as possible, but no simpler"

Open source software gives users and developers a lot of freedom, but freedom doesn't come easy. You usually have to fight for it or struggle to achieve it.

  13. make your own linux distro in your own language on Making Your Own Linux · · Score: 3

Now this is something I have wanted to do for a long time, but did not know where to start. Now if there only was some way to easily add national language support for many languages (Arabic, Hebrew, Chinese etc.).

I know slangsoft (http://www.slangsoft.com) has a library you can link with your java applications to accomplish this. But there are a few drawbacks to this toolkit.

    1
this toolkit is a commercial product and therefore hard or impossible to integrate with a linux distribution whithout violating the GPL (correct me if I am wrong).

    2
    It only works with java.

    3
    It only works for webapplications

Wouldn't it be neat if there was some sort of an open source alternative? I think this would help spread linux usage worldwide because people can have an operating system in their native language. Maybe Slangsoft can be persuaded to open source their product.

  14. Suze bugs on SuSE 6.4 Announced · · Score: 1

I just got a preview version of Suze 6.4 at CEBIT (it comes on one disc). During installation I noticed a few annoying things. At the end of the installation you have to create an account for yourself. when entering my user name I noticed that when I press "Z" on my keyboard, I get a "Y" on the screen. I also noticed that the installer did not detect my monitor rihgt and it kept refreshing the screen a few times per second resulting in a useless login prompt. In suze's defence however I must admit that previous versions worked just fine.

Setting up Apache webserver with PHP support was done automatically in contrast to other distributions. I also like Suze's efforts in helping developement of KDE. Suze is also the first to incorporate the Reiser File System in it's distributions. At least that is what a spokesperson said on "Computer Club" (this is a tv show on German television).

What you are saying is not entirely true. All the special effects houses use more than just one program for the effects. Lightwave or Houdini for modeling, Softimage for character animation and Renderman for rendering for instance. Movie studios also have the habit to contract different special effects houses for different shots and every special effects house has a favourite program or custom software they use. This results in a mix of 3D software being used in one movie.
