Internet gambling is a "taboo topic"? Yeah, right. Perhaps in some retarded country like China or one where religion has taken over like Saudi Arabia or Iran, but anywhere else? Please.
*apols if you're posting from one of those countries;)
It depends on the DVD player you use. Some will ignore the "no-skip" bit and let you fastforward or jump straight to menu. Other players will take great joy in mocking you as you sit there frantically pressing menu for the first few minutes.:(
I'll admit I didn't RTFA, but what could they possibly have to gain from this? All this really does is effectively take them out of the global market
What, like NTSC, a myriad incompatible mobile phone technologies, imperial measurements and silly time and date formats have taken the US out of the global market?
Do you reply to it before or after you've skipped it?
As for the whining - I think it's more a case of playing to the idiots that frequent these parts - "look, what i'm going to say might sound like I'm taking the piss but just stop and think for a second before you continue to knee-jerk your way through life".
My textbooks still stay that Americans value freedom and free speech more than Canadians, for example... but you wonder.
This will probably be modded -1 Troll but at the risk of offending the USian mods, and as a Brit, I'd be interested in seeing some kind of checklist or score so that I can easily work out just how less free I am as a citizen of the UK compared to a citizen of the US.
Why isn't it good enough to know you live in a free society? Why do we always hear how the US is "the most free". It's not a competition. Regardless.. mods do your worst;)
I'm not so sure that'll happen. DirectX is pretty much standard in the Windows gaming world (and due to MS's dominance, the PC gaming world is pretty much synonymous with the Windows gaming world), but that didn't stop iD using OpenGL and making a linux version of QuakeIII - it didn't stop UT2003 and UT2004 being released for linux, nor did it hinder the release of Neverwinter Nights or Sim City.
Granted, linux isn't exactly the OS of choice for the hardened PC gamer, but I don't see any cause for doom and gloom.
Sure I'm arguing the patent is stupid - the rest is irrelevant;) Go to creative driver downloads and take a look at how that (3 pane) page is organised. Go to ATI driver downloads and see the same (3 pane) thing. See Windows Explorer folder view (2 pane) and old MUI stuff on the Amiga (x pane) for other examples. Are they all ripping off the iTunes interface (doubtful as two came before iTunes) or are they merely employing a rather obvious method of UI design?
Take a look here - that's Amiga MUI which dates before iTunes... Besides, Windows' Explorer had this "drill down" UI function about a decade ago - you know, click on a folder and see its items in the right hand pane. So iTunes and Winamp have added a third pane. What if I write an interface that has a fourth pane? Can I patent that?
Like I said, it's a pretty standard, and very obvious UI solution.
Exactly. Similar to how Winamp arranges its playlists. See here for a grab I just made of winamp's library.
I click on an artist and get a list of that artist's albums in another pane. Click on one of those albums and get a list of tracks on that album in another pane.
Now, did this design come out before iTunes? I don't have time to go check on the release dates, but like you said, this is a pretty fundamental UI solution.
Sure. Instead of the dull, outdated, two-colour effect we now have, longhorn will include a selection of wonderful pastel shades incorporating the finest Laura Ashley designs for a more relaxed and tranquil "User-Interrupt"[tm] experience.
give me evidence that there is no God, and I'll listen.
As an paid up member of agnostics anonymous, I'd be interested in your evidence that there is a god. It's up to you to convince me there is a god - not the other way around.

He's posting on slashdot... you work it out ;)
Are you here all week? What's the veal like?
I don't think you can. Well, at least not the more important ones - you can't sign yourself into slavery, for example.
Here's a torrent for a DVD quality trailer.
More movies can be found here
The quality of animation is simply stunning.

Whoops. I have no idea why I titled that post "Reuters story"!
doh
Internetnews has this take on the story.
Do you reply to it before or after you've skipped it?

Apart from the foundations of the current internet, no, they're not. They're all european.

Too true! Never mind about dual layer, how about multiregion? My DRU-500AX has only one region change left - thank $DEITY for DVD Region Free.
Excellent!. What a devilishly witty pun my good man.
Hardly, considering xvid started life as an open source replacement for divx.
CD's released in the US - erm.. US

Let me guess.. you're posting this from soviet russia?
