So an airline has said that they will start taping the cabind during flight, to prevent terrorism and other safety threats. Why is this bad? Is this any different from a drugstore or a bank having a surveilence camera running? No, it isn't. Do we complain about those? Not that I've heard.

Well, let's see ... you can rob a drugstore or a bank. Pretty much all you can do with a plane is
    • hijack it; or
    • blow it up.

How, precisely, will a camera affect either of these possibilities? Really? And as for dealing with air rage (i.e. obnoxious passengers): it's not like there's a lack of witness anyways, what with planes being full of people. These cameras aren't so much wrong because they invade public space (yeah, yeah, airlines are privately owned, but they are still public insofar as a lot of random people inhabit them). They are bad because they will not accomplish anything, and unnecessary surveillance ought not be deployed.

And as for the flaming about HURD: suck though it may, it has a pretty intelligent design. While it wouldn't bet on it ever seeing production use, a lot of its ideas will no doubt filter into other systems.

Sure, he helped sell arms to Iran in order to fund right-wing terrorists in Nicaragua. Sure, he lied under oath to the public while doing it. But that's no reason not to, uh, give him the keys to one of the most comprehensive, militarized systems to spy on the entire citizenry of the USA with no judicial review whatsoever. 18. Re:Get a life.... on Act On Total Information Awareness · · Score: 4, Interesting

Seriously, all the info required to catch the hijackers was *already in government hands,* specifically in the FBI's hands. The FBI, being too busy chasing "eco-terrorists" (read: people who torch unoccupied SUVs), just didn't work with in the information.

Spying on the populace is NOT THE DoD's JOB; there is no way in hell we should tolerate the militarization of domestic intelligence, and there's no way we should hold our genitals as the DoD assembles massive amounts of private info, especially when there are much easier ways of preventing terrorism (not giving money to terrorists, having the FBI do its job, etc).

Anyways, remember the last time the DoD mass-militarized domestic security? We got internment camps on the West Coast.

But if being a sucker allows you to sleep better at night ... go ahead. I for one am losing sleep wondering when the DoD will decide that my politics and credit card purchases make me a "terrorist." Hear that? The predator drones are coming to a jeep near you!

RMS is advocating a voluntary switch to software more consistent with Linux's philosophy. He is free to advocate it, Linus is free to switch or not, as he chooses. What's to argue about?

As for the typical Windows rant: hey, remember all the movies rendered on Linux? Or, um, the enormous chunk of the server market that runs on it? Openness has its practical merits, and XP isn't so "rock solid" if you try and run any type of server on it.
