So an airline has said that they will start taping the cabind during flight, to prevent terrorism and other safety threats. Why is this bad? Is this any different from a drugstore or a bank having a surveilence camera running? No, it isn't. Do we complain about those? Not that I've heard.
Well, let's see... you can rob a drugstore or a bank. Pretty much all you can do with a plane is
hijack it; or
blow it up.
How, precisely, will a camera affect either of these possibilities? Really? And as for dealing with air rage (i.e. obnoxious passengers): it's not like there's a lack of witness anyways, what with planes being full of people. These cameras aren't so much wrong because they invade public space (yeah, yeah, airlines are privately owned, but they are still public insofar as a lot of random people inhabit them). They are bad because they will not accomplish anything, and unnecessary surveillance ought not be deployed.
Sorry, kiddo, but Linux can no longer be considered "Linus's kernel," what with it being developed by hundreds of people at any given time. While RMS does often spout a lot of hyperbole, this time he's responding to M$-like threats, and he's calling for a solution that seems pretty proportionate.
And as for the flaming about HURD: suck though it may, it has a pretty intelligent design. While it wouldn't bet on it ever seeing production use, a lot of its ideas will no doubt filter into other systems.
What it REALLY shows us is that 6 monkeys make for an impressive security-audit team. After all, they determined how to secure a Windows machine: urine, and a rock.
And where in the affadavit does it indicate with any seriousness whatsoever that Hawash found a particularly violent form of Islam? Growing a beard and going to a mosque aren't signs of terrorism any more than living in Michigan is. My neighbors started going to mass more often after the 11th, does that mean they're likely to start a crusade to reclaim the Holy Land?
This isn't to say that it makes it OK, etc, but if, say, all of them are willing prostitutes (of reasonable age/education, not economically coerced or otherwised forced), that does narrow the scope of the exploitation by a bit.
Yeah, because most prostitutes aren't economically coerced or otherwise forced...
Actually, no one is really claiming in court that activists made misleading statements. Nike has staunchly refused to claim in court that the activists were misleading, because they know they'd lose the case that way. They're defending their right to lie about their products and mislead the public into buying them; there is no parallel.

In other news, the FBI's "Carnivore" system is experiencing malfunctions, and was taken offline Saturday. The FBI denies allegations of an intrusion.
"When John Pointdexter speaks, is there still that flashing sign above his head that says, 'ALERT: I am a lying sack-of-shit felon'?"
Sure, he helped sell arms to Iran in order to fund right-wing terrorists in Nicaragua. Sure, he lied under oath to the public while doing it. But that's no reason not to, uh, give him the keys to one of the most comprehensive, militarized systems to spy on the entire citizenry of the USA with no judicial review whatsoever. After all, in this post-911 world, everything has changed.
Seriously, all the info required to catch the hijackers was *already in government hands,* specifically in the FBI's hands. The FBI, being too busy chasing "eco-terrorists" (read: people who torch unoccupied SUVs), just didn't work with in the information.
Spying on the populace is NOT THE DoD's JOB; there is no way in hell we should tolerate the militarization of domestic intelligence, and there's no way we should hold our genitals as the DoD assembles massive amounts of private info, especially when there are much easier ways of preventing terrorism (not giving money to terrorists, having the FBI do its job, etc).
Anyways, remember the last time the DoD mass-militarized domestic security? We got internment camps on the West Coast.
But if being a sucker allows you to sleep better at night... go ahead. I for one am losing sleep wondering when the DoD will decide that my politics and credit card purchases make me a "terrorist." Hear that? The predator drones are coming to a jeep near you!
Hushmail works fine for me in linux; it runs on java, so you need a browser (Mozilla works swimmingly) and a working virtual machine. Grab the latest one from Sun, make sure there's a link to it in the mox plugins dir. If it keeps breaking, try making the account on a windoze machine, and then accessing it in linux -- that worked for me the 1st time when my jvm was crashy.
Oh, and remember -- hush security is only as good as your passphrase. Diceware!
No, this would be "software communism" if we put a gun to Larry's head and made him release Bitkeeper's source. RMS is advocating a voluntary switch to software more consistent with Linux's philosophy. He is free to advocate it, Linus is free to switch or not, as he chooses. What's to argue about?
As for the typical Windows rant: hey, remember all the movies rendered on Linux? Or, um, the enormous chunk of the server market that runs on it? Openness has its practical merits, and XP isn't so "rock solid" if you try and run any type of server on it.
For years Disney has been peddling corporate monoculture at the expense of age-old fairytales. Now they're throwing their weight around to make sure Mickey isn't portrayed badly (see adbusters.org) and to make sure that people don't "steal" things they paid for. Haitian garment workers make about US$.11/hour - half the minimum wage there, and 1/5 the living wage - making Disney pajamas.
Oh, no! Somebody might steal from a poor, impoverished multi-billion dollar corporate thug!

Oh YEAH? Well, I'm going to counter-counter-COUNTER sue them!
*gasp* ROBOTS WILL STEAL OUR JOBS!
Isn't that the point of robots?
Yeah, there's a website full of them.
Well, let's see

Ah, you should be scared about Echelon. The DoD won't become your problem until it invades your country for defaulting on IMF payments.

French gov't not nice to foreigners? Bollocks! The Vichy state was perfectly friendly to the Nazis.
