It would be as if I took the Linux kernel source, put it on a website and said it was BSD licensed. If a company then took the source and used it with the terms set by the BSD license, they should not be ultimately culpable, since I had no right to state what terms the source could be used.

The photographer was wrong to use a license that allowed commercial usage of a photo he had no right to state could be used commercially.

At the risk of dragging the discussion off topic (well, not really, I AM going off topic.) I take offense to the repeated mentioning of people joining the guard getting it easy.

Joining the guard is NOT an 'easy way out.' The guard sees quite a bit of wartime action and does not get to just stay home keep the active duty's seats warm, no matter how much the Bush haters will have you believe. Being able to join a service and weasel your way out of heading overseas is a sign of knowing people in high places, not being in the guard.

I joined the guard knowing full well I would most likely be sent to war at some point. Being able to be pulled out of your normal civilian life and thrown into a war zone at nearly a moment's notice is not what i'd call lack of backbone. And I'm sure those who are serving extended tours over in Iraq right now would be glad to hear that they have no backbone, also. /Tired of being insulted by holier than thou types who probably would move to canada if someone mentioned military service along with their name in the same sentence.

Obviously you dont know how an internal combustion engine works. My near-stock 4ton 2500HD with a Vortec 350 kicks the hell out of the riced out civics who think they're straight out of the fast an d the furious. People who talk about the upfront cost of a civic compared to american muscle aren't looking at the whole picture. By the time you get those civics close to a ram-air firechicken or a Corvette in terms of top end speed, you're spending thousands more than you would to get the car you're trying to beat. Throw that same amount of money into that firebird or corvette, and you got yourself a monster.

Cars are all about the power to weight ratio, civis may be light, but that 1.8L leaf blower isnt going to cut it with the big boys. Those engines make their horsepower by being able to run at extremely high rpms, while the longer stroke and larger bore of the larger engines require less rpm, and give you much more torque. Its all a trade off, its impressive that some people get those 4cyl to 1000+ horsepower, but its surely not the economical way to get that much horsepower.

And just remember, even in the fast and the furious, that Supra needed to use nitrous to catch up to the good old american muscle. Plus american muscle cars just look meaner...

  20. Re:What is it with Honda Civics anyway? on Gentlemen, Hack Your Engines! · · Score: 1

The great thing for those with cars that are actually more than some goofy idea of 'cool', is that they're usually ruining their power by adding those large mufflers and huge exhaust that gives it that annoying sound.

Exhaust is a funny thing. On one side: think of your engine as a huge air pump. The more air you push in and shoot out, the more power you'll have. (Very over simplified). But on the other hand, if you aren't getting much air into your intake, but you have huge exhaust (which is usually the case with civics) you actually will lose performance. This is because you NEED some back pressure.

Good examples of doing exhaust wrong:
4" Exhaust on otherwise pretty unmodded civics
    1" Exhaust on RV's

Good example of doing exhaust right:
96-up GM trucks (they are true dual exhaust through 2 catalytic converters and then to one muffler, and out as one large pipe).

Just keep in mind most of the 'rice cars' are made to look and sound cool, but really don't perform any better than your average high schooler's hand me down car. It's very easy to tell the difference between wasted exhaust and performance exhaust, you can just hear more air being pushed through the pipe, it loses alot of its raspy sound and gets a little more rumble into it since the pipe is a little more filled. /ramble

Even if you want to talk newer cars instead of the classic hot rods, I don't see how people can even begin to compare a nice gen4 Ram-Air Firebird and an Impreza. One look and you can almost hear them say "I'm ready to eat you" and the other says "I'm ready to drive my family to the market and buy cereal."

Not to say I have no love for all kinds of racing, I just hate people bragging about their ugly looking and worse sounding civics.

Give me a 67 GTO or a 67 F-Body with 2.5" dual exhaust and a Chevy 400SB anyday, that rumble gets my hair standing up on my neck. The whining of a 1.8L 4 banger makes me want to run them over with my truck.
