No you don't get how things work around here, when Microsoft does something it is bad. When Linus does something similar it is good.

Maybe this is an evil plot by MS to scuttle OSS. Now the source code has been leaked they can start claiming that we're stealing their IP, Wine is a prime target for this. And its not as if they haven't got the bucks/lawyers to back their claims up either. This could turn out very bad.

Just how much customising do you need?

From my experiance if you only need a little customisation then you can do most of that stuff from a config file, .ini if you want it to be easy to edit, xml if your going to write a gui to do it or your users are compertant. Any more than that your better off going with something like python or perl, they are widely known, and have rich libraries to let the people using the app do some really imaginative things.

The other thing that you can do is write your app in such a way that it is easy for scripting langs to get there hooks into. For example, on windows you can do this by providing com interfaces to all the things you want to have control over, then you can use any lang you want to control your app.

I'd like to see linux circa 1998 try and power a car.

Well in 1998 2.0 was the kernel of the day, and from memory 2.0 was faily stable. Also I seem to remember that some embeded stuff is based on this kernel, so this would make it quite capible for running a car.

I think this article is a little misleading. I don't think all the computer system in the car would be running windows 98, just what the user(driver?) can see. I think the real time stuff would be running a RTOS, like QNX.

    Oh yeah OS'es don't power cars, petrol/desile/electrons do :)

Its not real pretty tho, sorta went in the wrong direction, but I learnt abit so it wasn't a complete loss.

Very frustrating and the end result was a mess. I sorta compare it to changing the bridge construction from stone to metal half way throught the design phase.

The issue is getting OEMs to sell linux boxen already to rock and roll. Once that happens then more apps will start to appear and linux will apear on more desktops
