Also, it doesnt make much sense anyway. Apparently Qwerty was developed to avoid the actual typing heads from jamming when typing at speed. Allegedly. I dont have proof of this. AFAIK, this means keeping the frequently hit keys away from each other. Yes you can learn to type fast on it, but I'm pretty sure its not the most efficient layout when you dont have moving type heads. Dvorak developed a very efficient layout.

Well maybe compared to San Francisco, where a 2 bedroom condo is $700k, and a house is 1.1-1.2 million minumun.

Basically, for example, in the US, the development of Cell Phone standards was screwed by competing behemoths that already had a stranglehold on the telecoms market. Ditto with Broadband/DSL deployment. I guess in China, they have nothing much, so they will start off with the now state of the Art... whereas the US still has difficulty with the last mile.

Yeah, and so do ASM and Fruitmenu, mainly because they replicate OS 8 and 9 functionality for me.

However, I have to take issue with Tog on DragThing. Firstly yes, I MISS FINDER TABS. But this application is annoying. First, it is an APPLICATIOn. Secondly, it does seem to actually Do Tabs. Its YAMD (Yet Another Multi Dock) which I personally cannot stand as a way to organize my desktop.

Of course, you might like them and thats fine. My poiny is that I spent 20 mins trying to do "Finder Tabs", and I could not get it to do it. Maybe its only in Panther (I'm not ready to bleed yet, still on 10.2.8), but he could have said that (as indeed is Minimize in Place). So, its very misleading. I really wanted to get Finder Tabs :) believe me. There was no clear and obvious way to get that to happen.

I am quite on the cusp of switching after 10 years of using Mac's. The one saving grace is the Unix base and the gorgeous UI, but these days the hardware sucks (my GF's $3000 al Book), and lack of stuff like Teamspeak is just a no no. As for the external hardware, well, I am now firmly of the opinion that there should be a class action suite over the Titaniums and aluminium's (mine is pitted already after 2 months).

  22. Re:a better IP system on AT&T Sues PayPal and eBay for Patent Infringement · · Score: 1

Not a bad idea. As soon as you exercise stock options (and hold the value) you have to pay taxes, so why not patents. You assign a dollar amount for licencing, and have to pay tax on that, regardless of whether it is used or not. If you then sue someone for not paying it (or claim they breach), then the maximum damages would be those that you claimed. Time value would be hard to predict - but it should put an end to overly broad patent claims OR would force the claimer to put their money (in the form of taxes) where their mouth is. One could almost imagine a derivatives market here somewhere as well. At the very least, one could look and say (in 1994) hey ATT took this patent out and valued it at 1 billion dollars... perhaps they have something clever... Lawsuits and stuff would still apply - and you wouldnt get ya taxes back if they called No Clothes...

It actually seems like a good idea. Some problems I can imagine are optimization flags may have non speed related side-effects?

However, this seems like a great candidate for GA's - a fitness function (ie speed of execution), and a nice binary vector of atributes (flags).

Interesting that the gains aren't that great it would seem to sugges that the flags don't do much :) or maybe the base-line is already close to optimal, and so it isnt a hard problem?

But Kudos nevertheless. No expert in the GA field, so its possible someones tackled this before, but if they haven't, extra Kudos.
