  1. NDS is Best on Where are the 'Modern' Directory Services? · · Score: 5, Interesting

LDAP/Samba/Kerbros on Suse works real well out of the box in the latest Suse Server offerings. I don't play with many distros so I can't recommend it against others.

But for professional use on networks of any real size, I really try to push my customers to NDS. Say what you want about Novell, but I have yet to find a beter DS that Novell's.

I've been a Dr. Who fan since I was 10 years old or so. I remember rushing home from school so I could catch the last 20 minutes of the half hour episode on PBS. Now that I have seen them all, I will watch it if I get home early on a Saturday night.

I think that it will be fun to have a radio drama of the show. It's great listening to the old radio shows that you can get on tape and CD's.

I love just sitting back, listening to the story, and picturing what is going on. It's so much more relaxing to hear a good story that you can see in your mind rather than having to watch on tv. TV stories seem to get lost in the visuals and forgets to put a good story in at times.

  15. I don't see the conspiricy on NSA Inside? · · Score: 1

This is part of the beauty of open source. You don't have to accept all the parts. If there is something that you don't want, take the code out. From the article, it sounds like the NSA's MAC stuff is pretty neat. But it is not something that will break your system if you don't install it. I know that as a home user I would probably never implement the functionality. On some of the servers that I manage, I might. If I were running servers taking credit cards, for instantance, I would use this feature. If someone were working for, or lived in, another country, I would really look at the code. It all depends on your point of view.

But to just say no becouse it is the NSA, well that just does not make sense at all. If you know of another, better solution for this type of code, I would love to hear it. Or if there is a better reason than "it's the NSA" please let me know that also.

  17. Take your vacation on Taking Time Off When You Are The Only Admin? · · Score: 1

I learned a long time ago that no matter your position in a company, you need to take time for yourself.

I am guessing that you have friends in the industry at some level. Those that you go out with after work talking about what you did with your network. One or more of them may be a consultant that you can say to your boss "While I'm on vacation my friend Bob may be able to fix things for you for $X an hour."

Or get an agreement in writing before hand that states for every 15 minutes of time I work while on vacation I get that much back in comp time. That way, even if you do decide to be incredibly loyal while away, you don't entirely loose that much vacation time.

You miss the point of what I was saying. I am not saying that I roll out RedHat then change to Debian. I mean that if I roll out RedHat at my current empolyer, then change jobs to a place that uses Debian. That is when the lack of standards comes into play.

  25. Standardize on Linux Support For The Enterprise? · · Score: 1

It's really the only way to get something like this to work. Windows has made it to where it is becouse I can go to any Winbox and know that there is a registry in the \windows directory. I know that hitting the "start" button will bring up the menu, etc.

With Linux, I can roll out and maintain (with a team) an enterprise of RedHat boxen. I can keep it going for years. Then I decide to leave that company and go elsewhere. The next place I go has an enterprise of Debian boxen. Well, now I have to spend time learning how the Debian system works. The basics are all the same, true, but the specifics are different. And then what about the previous admin? Did he document all the little things that he modified to get things working?

The flexibility of Linux is it's greatest strength and it's greatest weakness. If the major distributors can get together and come up with basic standards, if Gnome and KDE can bring us consistant menu options, and we (the user base) can stop bashing each others distros, I think we have something that we can move into enterprise wide situations.
