Seriously, I don't see the problem here... A politician who's main exposure in Europe is for the crazy things he's said about religion and civil rights, who believes that a convicted conman found and translated tablets which then mysteriously disappeared... and learned that Jesus was in Utah among other things... well... that politician shouldn't pretend to be stupid for a joke, if that's what it was... becuase people will see past the joke, and just think he's stupid.
ME. Right now. Why would I want to have my tax dollars on this. I have to pay the mortgage. I have to pay the $320 Comcast bill. Going to Mars isn't going to get me anywhere.
Human mentality...
It gets your Children, your Grand Children.. or their Children a future secure in the knowledge that their entire civilization might not be wiped out overnight. That doesn't pay your Comcast bill, certainly... but think about why you live, and strive to be alive, life in that sense is simply striving to ensure the continuation of your genes and to provide for the welfare and safety of your children, and your progeny into the future... by that logic alone this is the right thing to do.
More than that, the human race is... to the best of our knowledge at present, the most complex/advanced life in the universe... I think it is our obligation to protect that in the long term, not spreading out into the solar system, and eventually the stars is simply slow suicide for life on earth, and possibly life in the universe.
What about all the people like me who bought laptops and netbooks with Windows and put Linux on instead?,,, I have copies of XP Home, and Vista Ultimate that I can't refund, and the laptops are not available without Windows.
I did this over a year ago, but my radiator was brand new when I installed it... and it's mounted in the wall in the garage with fans on it... the water is pumped with a central heating pump and piped to 3 PC's in the house.
Anyone have bandwidth big enough to hold a picture or two because I'd get slashdotted instantly..
A book is small by internet terms, compressed it's probably smaller than this web page...
It's not like the physical books are going away, but I cure as hell am not going to D.C. to read somthing.. it would be cheaper to buy a modem and computer!
Just how multiuser is NT? Not at all, from where I'm standing.... unless you count 1 user at a time.
Sure you can share disk and printers with some access control, but I can whack X screens and X keyboards on Unix and have X users on the same box... Be they dumb terminals or X terminals... Some cases I can just whack 2 VGA cards in one box to do it!
It only matters that "The OS gets fixed a bit" as you put it, if you infact use the OS. Personally I have not used Windows for the last 3 years and intend to stick with Linux. It's frustrating from time to time that windows gets better device support from manufacturers, but only because that's changing and I want it to change faster!
I'll exchange functionality for reliability any day, and MS really does need to be competing rather than running a cartel I view Linux as the start of that process, Look how far the PC has come since IBM stopped being the only company making them.
This benchmark shows various parameters and demonstrates how to make either platform excel...... It's "Correct" only in what it measures, but really simply a more complete picture of reality.....
If the BSD distribution used GNU tools, I would still be using Linux... I'm using Linux, GNU is along for the ride, however I do realise that a large majority of the code I rely on is GNU.
I would like to credit GNU and RMS, but it easy to see why people are upset when changing the name to gnulix or even GNU/Linux are suggested. I think that a GNU Inside logo would be great... I'd use it and LIKE it... which is the point really.
Mmm... I'm hoping we can get 2.4 (Or 3.0???) out before Win2000 (Wouldn't that be a scoop!)
Anyway, I'm running kernels from 2.0.25 up to 2.3.0 at the moment and I know it's sad but I'm loath to upgrade a box for the sake of it and I've had no problems at all in the 860 days uptime
Yes, I'm wondering if I can crack the ULONG max jiffy wrap TWICE!... You gotta laugh!
I hope this is a 64 bit machine because the 32bit ULONG max only represents 497 days... I should know I have a linux box here that's got 835 days but it only says 338 because it wraped back to 0 days!
It's a win-win situation for Linux... If MS doesn't release Office for Linux then Wine and the Linux suites will develop... If they do then everyone will use Linux instead of windows for corporate installs because its more stable and Linux will benefit from market acceptacnce...
I just can't work out which is the best outcome....

Just for the guy above who must be having a bad day with his "UNIX is the problem" quotes...

It's a Rotary (Wankel) engine... not a Radial (Piston) engine as used in early aircraft... Sorry, bit confusing I know.

Actually there are more people who would read via the net then would go there...
Hey, if you can't do 70 you'll be very unpopular round here!

The sunday times URL is "www.sunday-times.co.uk"
Oh come on....
So why can't exchange server process rules that write to personal folders unless I am logged onto a workstation running the client?
Terminal server is vaguely multi user.... but have you seen how much memory it hoggs!

Naaa, the next version should be Boomer, but they'll probably call it Buffy....
