How pissed do you think Joe and Sally are going to be when they buy and find out that it and 90% of the other software for sale will not run on their machine?
Putting Linux on the systems would pretty much render the computer useless for 90% of the Joe Six-Packs and Sally Lunch-Buckets out there.
Besides they aren't going to be able to properly secure the machine once they get on the net. You can't expect these people to subscribe to bugtraq and update religeously!
Because of a project I was working on which required a lot of internet access one month, I got socked with a huge bill. I asked if they were more interested in keeping me as a customer, or more interested in collecting the amount on the bill (it's not that I expected free service, just something more reasonable).
This is rich, you're complaining about their arrogance? You entered into a contract in good faith and then when you get the bill you try to get out of it assuming that they would rather have a customer who may try to get out of paying his bills in the future instead of just getting what is rightly theirs.
I'm using microsoft XP currently, and I have to tell you that smart tags rock!
If you type in an address you can click on the smart tag to get a map for the area the address is in. Thats just one example of what they can do.
I can see the problem with smart tags in IE 6.0 but there is nothing wrong with them in Office XP.

I can't believe this was marked up as insightful!
What makes you think that the FSF deserves that money? Why not BSD, Apple, IBM or any other company?
Or how about invest it in something that will actually benefit the majority of the public?
Come on people the world does not revolve around Linux and the FSF!
The first half of my argument still stands.

You sir, make me sick!
Actually it's not as bad as it seems.
After installing the user is given the option to manually check for updates or have XP do it automatically.
You could store one hell of an encryption key on that keychain.
How many bit encryption would that be?
