"So why worry about it? It's mental masturbation."
Well, I think it's probably worth worrying about if countries are considering jailing people based on apparent genetic tendencies.
But it seems absurd to talk about removing accountability. The mind is a clever little device, and the existence of accountability in a society clearly acts as a deterrent to desires in the mind that are known to be frowned upon by society. It may be less significant a deterrent than people tend to believe, but that sort of fundamental change to the tenants of justice isn't going wash with the public, nevermind the science. And I'm not bothered by that.
Yes, there is a large, vocal, and frighteningly powerful group in the USA ignoring science for ideological reasons. Is there anything to learn by having a discussion on Slashdot about this?
Shouldn't we be asking Slashdot something like, "How do we stop the insanity?"
Mac OS 8+ (at least) has it built in. Windows 98+ has it built in (but you need the CD to install it) beOS had it. Linux distros have all had it since I started typing dvorak in 1998. Try xsetkbmap dvorak or loadkeys dvorak in a shell.
Not to mention that you should hit Portland anyway- it's the most wireless city in the US! Go downtown to Pioneer Courthouse Square, sip coffee, have a game of chess with the locals, and check your e-mail on the free wireless network all at the same time.
Good food, inexpensive, great public transit. Great place to travel to.
That's an interesting analysis which fits pretty well with my idea of how capilatism deals with excess production, but I wonder if you can give me some links to more information on this topic? Especially the "addictive chemicals in our foods" bit. No offense, but it's pretty strange information and I'd like to verify it!
The right to own a firearm was put into the founding documents of the US in a time when rifling had just been invented and loading 1 shot into a gun took at least 30 seconds, if not more. It's hard to imagine something like Columbine with a weapon like that. Perhaps the founding fathers would have had different ideas if they knew where "firearms" were going.
ask one of those out of work artists why they continue to write/paint/act or whatever in conjunction with their waiting job: because they love to do it.
Everyone here is talking about a sense of responsibility, a desire to give-back. I think that's all an exaggeration: the people making great free software are writing software because they LOVE to make software. Coding is fun, creative, and challenging. You never stop learning and improving at it and you never stop loving that first time you run a program after compiling out a bug, and then testing it and seeing that it works.
I think that's the difference between OS programmers and the people who get payed wads of cash everyday to write proprietary code: OS/free programmers are artists, and they can't stop creating.
The fact that the product is often practical doesn't change anything.
easy to use OS? Try MacOS. It's buggy just like windows, but it's easier and it's been introducing people to computers since 1984. Microsoft stunted the developement of OSen that could have made it _far_ easier to learn computers than Windows does when they started monopolizing the market.
I'm glad you say: 'Windows became synonymous with "computer." ' So since windows isn't really _good_ at anything, my computer-illiterate family members, forced to use windows, think that "computer" means unstable, hard to use (sure, easier than linux, but definitely not easy. no way. not half as easy as MacOS), impossible to understand, and slow. I try to explain to them that these are traits of Windows, but they don't understand. The statement sounds redundant since windows and computer are synonymous.
so thanks to microsoft for making the world think of computers, which are 100% logic, as unstable.

Seems like that could be more productive.
on what OSen?

Quick Internet searches told me how to do this.
I didn't think they got much stiffer than the Triple Nickel.
