  1. Arghh - Got that right! on Spielberg's Taken · · Score: 1

    Make 'em walk the plank!

when will the TV media change? So sick of it all, but I'm still watching...

All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace

    I like to think (and
    the sooner the better!)
    of a cybernetic meadow
    where mammals and computers
    live together in mutually
    programming harmony
    like pure water
    touching clear sky.

    I like to think
    (right now, please!)
    of a cybernetic forest
    filled with pines and electronics
    where deer stroll peacefully
    past computers
    as if they were flowers
    with spinning blossoms

    I like to think
    (it has to be!)
    of a cybernetic ecology
where we are free of our labors
    and joined back to nature,
    returned to our mammal
    brothers and sisters,
    and all watched over
    by machines of loving grace.

And you would have an autoguided micro GPS system

  5. OnStar - has a 70% NON-renwal rate... on Onstar Navigation System to Deliver In-Car Spam · · Score: 1, Redundant

According to a poll at saab.com, 70% of current OnStar users do NOT plan on renewing their service after the first free year.
I know I won't - it's cute, but not worth the $$. They want $0.50/min for cell phone use on top of the annual fee! The GPS data is only available to the call center and the thing can't even set the time in the car!
This debacle was obviously created by a Marketing committe.

While their specs say the device has composite video OUT, the actual picture of the back panel clearly shows ONLY composite video IN.
This seems to indicate that there is no way to get/capture a video signal - ie no way to record!

I've seen this trend on more sets, is this the result of the current copyright frenzy?

  11. Sat stuff - My $0.02 on Ask Slashdot: The Dish · · Score: 1

Ok you asked for it -
I'm familiar with Primestar and have lurked for years in the sat news groups. IMHO Primestar had the best idea, lease, don't own, plus 1+ meter dishes. This means that when the hardware is FU'd, they will make it OK - no charge. Also the 1+meter
dishes mean great signal! Next time it's raining, call up a friend with one of those 18" weenies... Ok, so Primestar is deepsix'd, I would vote for DISH - because, well, they are based on a standard, also from what I've heard, they don't suffer as much from the pixelation caused by overcompression on DSS. I have seen this on Primestar, but only very, very rarley. The worst case was having to trudge out in the snow at 1AM and knock the ice off the bloody thing (they do sell dish warmers...). Unless you're into an enormous amount of testosterone crazed sports and PPV addiction - in that case go with DSS.
What ever system you get, get a larger dish, 24" at least. You won't be sorry.
    Best of luck,

  12. MCIWorld has the same anti linux Policy on BellSouth denies ADSL for Linux users · · Score: 1

I got the same run around when I tried to get an MCIWorld dialup account. They sent me a CD for Win95, so I called them back:
Me: I can't use the CD, I know the POP number, just give me a Username and Password.
Them: We can't do that. You MUST run Windows 95,
and install Microsoft IE in order to register.
Me: I can't do that, I'm using Linux.
Them: Then you cannot register for MCIWORLD

So then I found out that they have a 'Take it Home' page on their www site. This asks a few questions about your phone number, etc and then generates an install program along with an 'account.mci' file. You are sposed to download this to a floppy at work, then take it home and install under Win95. But the 'account.mci' file is just an ASCII text file with all the info you need - Username, password, email name, password, etc. Works fine. They are truly morons.
