I don't personally see much point in running another distro in chroot. You're just wasting memory and CPU on running two X11s and all, and it's obviously going to be slow.

I'm still disappointed in Nokia keeping the necessary information to be able to implement battery charging closed, such a dick move from their part; I installed Gentoo natively on my N900 -- no chroot -- and god damn it flew compared to Maemo, but no matter what I just couldn't get battery charging to work. And quite obviously not being able to charge the battery on a mobile phone makes the whole thing quite useless.

Sideloading is supported on the following editions when you activate a sideloading product key:

            Windows 8 Pro

            Windows 8 Enterprise*

    * The sideloading product key is not required with Windows 8 Enterprise when the computer is joined to an active directory domain.

    noteNote
Sideloading is also supported on Windows RT. The group policy service is not enabled by default on Windows RT. You must enable the service before policies can be applied to the computer.

To sideload line-of-business apps on Windows Server 2012, the computer must be joined to an active directory domain.

For more information, see How to Add and Remove Apps.

In other words a side-loading key is needed. Ordinary users won't get that and won't be able to side-load.

Talk about misguided claims. The "badass mode" discussed here is just the same as "hardcore mode" in any other game, including Diablo II and III and so on. The developers simply didn't remove all the code relating to the hardcore mode, they just didn't include it in the menus for the game. The hack involves manually toggling the hc mode on via config files, nothing else. It has absolutely nothing at all to do with developing for modded consoles.

I'm quite wary of this, actually. Microsoft employs encryption that can be reversed, ie. if you were to forget your password you can request a new one and your files will still be readable. What this means for you is that Microsoft -- and therefore anyone who they wish to give access to your files to -- can roam around and peruse your files. Especially if you're not a U.S. citizen this most likely won't be a terribly good thing.

That's huge; it effectively eliminates the concept of local file-systems for user data.

Hardly. Try e.g. recording a home movie and wait a few weeks for it to upload -- there are some things that the cloud just cannot fix before broadband speeds go up.

Are you happy on Win7? Good for you; if you are on Win7 & have no other devices or intention of sharing data on anything but your trusty desktop, then frankly the benefits of Win8 are lesser..

Oh, I have multiple machines, but I only have outgoing bandwidth of about 1mbit/s and I have 3 terabytes of data. Plus I don't want all of my stuff somewhere where I can't control who gains access to them.

How? It sounds like the GP's daughter wants a certain amount of privacy and freedom to conduct her own affairs.

I disagree. To me it sounds simply like the kid thinks GP would feel it's wrong to do what she is doing, and that's why she is lying about it. Nothing to do with privacy, and also it doesn't mean she herself feels it's wrong, just that GP would feel what she's doing is wrong. As to why she thinks going to the mall with her friend would be wrong, well, that you must ask GP.

Some of that privacy comes in the context of simply telling mom/dad, "It's none of your business", but that's almost certainly not going to produce desirable results for anyone--it turns the parent into a dictator and the child into a rebel.

If it turns out like that you're doing it wrong, IMHO. Why shouldn't the kid be allowed to have his or her own business? Just make a compromise out of it, get the kid to either say where or who she is with and let her keep the other details to herself; she won't feel so insulted by you "trespassing on her premises" and you still have more-or-less enough info to find her if need be.

Without knowing the kid, how she's being raised up and so on it's hard to say anything concrete, but there's one thing that's universal: presentation is everything. There's more than one way of presenting a request, for example, and a good parent knows which buttons to avoid in order not to turn it into a hostile situation.

Like the GP said, lying is a rather normal thing.

I never claimed it isn't. But getting caught for lying is of paramount importance considering the kid's later life. How you handle a situation where the kid is lying is equally important, however: going all berserk on her is not gonna grow any sort of trust towards you.

Nearly every weekend she goes to her BFF's house to "study", but the two of them really go hang out at the mall (according to both the phone and the bank transactions). Here is what I have done about the situation: nothing. Lying and deceiving your parents is a normal part of growing up, and the point of spying on your kids is not to prevent them from being normal, but to protect them from real dangers.

Hm. Personally I would rather catch the child from lying and then have a chat about lying and why she feels she needs to lie to me in the first place. I mean, I wouldn't be angry about the occasional skipping of class or hanging out with friends, that's all normal stuff, but never confronting her lying is just gonna raise some serious issues later in her life. If you can solve the issue in a way that the child doesn't any longer feel the need to lie to you you're BOTH better off than before, plus you've just taught the kid a valuable lesson.
