Exactly. That's the real problem here. The "checks and balances" that should keep congress in line DOES NOT WORK. A law passed by congress can only be overturned by the courts, and then only if someone breaks that law, and has the money to fight it.
If our judicial system had the power to rule on these laws without going through hoops, then we'd have a fast, fair way to deal with bad laws.
Also, while I'm on my government soapbox, we *MUST* be able to hold congress accountable for the laws they pass. As it stands they may call a vote based upon how loud each side yells "Yea" and "Nay". The DMCA was passed this way. Since no one bothered to take a count, I don't know if I should re-elect my congressmen or not. Bah.
Thomas Jefferson and Ben Franklin are probably spinning so fast they're gonna change the axis of earth's orbit.
Slashdot folks seem to play the role of the Dilbert boss when it comes to social issues. They expect the best of both worlds. They want uncompromising individual freedom and privacy, but at the same time expect the government to prevent bad stuff from happening to them.
I never asked for extra protection. I never asked the goverment to force me to wear a seatbelt. I never asked for protection from firearms. I never asked them to ban keychains at schools. I never asked them to read my neighbor's email. I never asked for meaningless random searches at airports. I never pointed a finger at the Intellegince community for 9/11.
I own a pair of Chris's wirecutters ( pictured in his catalog as 'r93381.jpg' ). You won't find a happier customer anywhere! They cut through wire like hot bu.. er, well like wirecutters! The adjustable 'wire stripper' setting is second to none. And the rubber handle is confortable as can be! I was able to snip 4 times in a row before resting!
I highly recommend this American Made product to anyone with a few VCRs to disable. Thank you Chris!
I've seen a number of posts saying that you're not just buying the username and password, but the characters, lewt, etc. This is close, but not quite right.
The people buying EQ accounts could go in and get those high level characters and phat lewt on thier own without this account. They are buying a piece of your life.
Our lives have a finite number of hours in them. How we spend those hours defines what our lives are about. The people buying game accounts do not wish to spend thier lives building a virtual character. They want to play some, sure, but they don't want to experience the struggle ( or is it joy? ) of raising a character. They want to go in, have a little fun, and then jump back out and spent thier lives on something else.
So when you buy someone else's account, you are buying the time they took to build the character.
This is why Verant's stance on selling accounts bothers me. I sympathise with thier concerns, but that account represents an investment of time ( of the player's life, really ) and I can not see where Verant has any legal or moral leg to stand on. They assume that they own your time, a piece of your life.
This is as absurd as BMW owning a chunk of my life because I decide to sell my car. I invested time and money into keeping it in good shape, and if I want to move on to another car they have no hold on me. So it should be with online avatars.
Sorry to go off on a rant, but this is my life, not Verant's. If I want to sell my time, that's my business, PERIOD.
After reading through this, I browsed over to OpenNIC and registered for free. Then I setup my name server as per their instructions ( They have instructions for regular, non-nameserver running people too ) and everything is up and running smoothly.
I highly recommend that others do the same "just in case".
They've given me spot on searches for so long, they ought to get paid if they want to. As long as it doesn't interfear with my searches ( It won't ), let 'em have it.
Slashdot, you suck. I don't care how this is modded.
I submitted almost this EXACT TYPE OF NEWS STORY about Family Guy ( Which is 100% funnier than Futurama ) and I got rejected so fast I still have the skid marks on my ass.
At the time, I figured that it was because Family Guy isn't technically a geek thing ( by some people's standards ). And now I see this. Bleh.
For those of you out there who *DO* care about Family Guy, you need to see the petition located here. You can also get info on snail-mail and pickiting here.
PS - Futurama isn't BAD, I just don't find it nearly as funny.
If you're looking for a nice game of chess, may I humbly suggest looking into my project, Knights? It's not as thrill-packed as Quake III, but c'mon. =)
Can we please quit announcing Microsoft exploits? Exploits on Microsoft products are new in much the same way that New England isn't. I'd just assume take it as read that their products are the swiss cheese of the industry and get on with my life.
Seriously, no mention is made as to the judges' reasoning behind this. Was there a bit of data that the jury wasn't privy to, or is Judge Robert E. Payne just a dick? And what's with Geoff Tate's comment? "...the record has been set straight on DDR SDRAM." Ummm, what? For all we know those counts of fraud were overturned for shits and giggles. Anyone have other sources they could share? Perhaps something that actually tells me something? Need input.
I may be wrong, but when I hear 'Organic', I think organism. When I think organism, I think of life. Here's a free clue for all the media types out there: "Carbon != Organic". It's simply one of many elements listed on that chart I had to memorize in school. I would have read the article even without the flashy headlines, folks.
This technology sounds impressive, so long as something better comes out to drive these prices down to an affordable level.
I've been an avid Simpsons fan since Ulman, but I'm weary of a movie at this late date. IMHO, most of the Simpsons' best eps are long gone, and I really don't see them keeping me in stitches for 2+ hours. I *REALLY* hope I'm wrong, but I'm planning for the worst.
In your opinions, were you successful at getting your points across to the court? Where were the shortcommings? And finally, what points were you able to get across to the american public that you felt were important?
in my life have I ever been so un-suprised. However, all is not lost. There are still several stages of the game left to play, and each of those steps may prove to our advantage. Only at the end, when all is lost, and Mordor, err, MPAA has the Supreme Court on their side, will it be time to panic, as it were.
It's time for legislation to be passed protecting the rights of a fandom website before more people are hurt. I find it sickening that the corprate assholes running the world create a marketing division (who's sole job is to make you fall in love with their product) and then turn right around and punish you with their legal department (...punished because you want to EXPRESS your love for their product). This type of hypocracy makes me gag on my own bile. Are we to be nothing more than a consuming robot? buy Buy BUY! But for God's sake don't talk about it! Salesmen used to love word-of-mouth advertising. Is that now illegal? And don't anyone give me that intelectual-property bullshit. In grammer school I was taught that the rights of the individual came first. It would seem that I've been lied to. You know, after my mom told me that Santa Claus wasn't real, I took comfort in the idea that my rights as an individual were protected in the constitution, and that those rights were real. Is anything real anymore? Corbin Dallas
although these knives look sweet as hell, I wonder... isn't there some kind of certification that exsists to prove that extra-terrestrial material was used? What should someone look for when purchasing these goodies? This guy uses the same ISP as me... hmmm, maybe he'd be cool enough to show me his collection.
Despite technical problems some astronomers have with these sats, the very thought of burning over sixty working satellites without really using them just feels wrong. Kudos Castle Harlan!
BTW, does anyone have a web site for Castle Harlan?
I've been running a K7/600 on a Gigabyte mobo (Irongate chipset) with few problems under Mandrake 6.5.
Problem #1 - Yes, I had to append my mem config under lilo. No biggie.
Problem #2 - Well, this has nothing to do with Linux, but my Pioneer DVD drive will reboot my system if used for > 1 minute at a time. Guess I'd better dig out the warranty card.
My programming started on a Commodore 64 that my dad bought us when I was 9. He forgot to purchase a disk or tape drive, and didn't buy any games, so there I was, stuck with a C=64 and nothing else. So, I started reading through the manual, which described BASIC, and started to learn to make things on my own. By the time my father could afford a disk drive and some programs, I wasn't interested. I just wanted some blank disks for my own projects. (Anyone remember Ahoy! and Compute's Gazette?)
Now a days, the Lego Mindstorms is probibly the best start for your youngsters. Java or C(++) shouldn't be too far behind. I wasted my time learning 6510 assembly rather than learning something that I could use as an adult. You can bet that the PC's of your children's adulthood will be equally different.

If the measure of a Root system lies in it's age, and number of tlds, then ICANN wins.
I just LOVE Katz's articles. Always so well researched and profound.
Huh, it's not April 1st anymore?!?! Crap!

And now back to the wall.
I thought not. So what platform is this for? x86?
So this thing infects Linux running on a specific platform, and only when the victim decides to run a strange, unknown binary attached to an email.
Next.
A Microphone. No, I'm serious! Stream the audio out of the bathroom, and set up a greatest, err, hits page.

[Insert witty tagline here.]

No, I don't mean Korben...
